Because he is a waste of at bats. Give them to anyone who may have a future on this team, even if it is a small one. I'd rather see Palka at this point over Alonso.
I'm not complaining. I still have hopes for a solid rotation of Kopech, Cease, Lopez, Giolito, and Dunning. Since they obviously won't sign a top free agent, I hope they keep taking best bat available in the draft.
Neither Tilson nor Engel are even worth discussing. These guys don’t sniff good team’s rosters.
So one bad outing ballooned Herrera’s ERA. I expect him to have a decent season but a $9 million dollar reliever serves no purpose on this team for this year and likely next year at this rate.
And why can’t I include Santana? Hahn signed him thinking he was worth $4.3 million dollars even though he couldn’t break 90 mph with his fastball. The only thing that got the Sox out of eating that $4.3 million dollars was Santana being stupid and not accepting the assignment to Charlotte, not Hahn and his wizardry of the GM role.
It was a terrible offseason. There is really no way to sugarcoat it, as you are apparently trying hard to do.
You forgot to mention Tilson’s .292 SLG and .623 OPS last year. He is what he is and that’s a fourth outfielder at best. I apologize for being overly negative and not being excited about another Adam Engel.
2. Why? They were expected to be terrible again and are. May as well play the Cordells, Tilsons, and Banueloses of the AAAA world and go for another top draft pick.
Literally trade them the minute they pitch lol. They can’t stay healthy so take whatever you can get for them at this point. Hoping they both pitch well up until the trade deadline is a fool’s errand. They won’t make it.
I would have preferred Harper/Machado, Gio Gonzalez, and whatever minor league signings Hahn wanted to make. I didn’t see much point in signing a bunch of guys on one year deals if you didn’t land one of the two big names.
Hahn is currently batting 2 for 8 (25%) with his main offseason acquisitions. Not very inspiring. I’d prefer less dumpster diving and more success than that.
Fulmer is still here and has shown absolutely nothing as a first round pick. They will keep Rodon around as long as possible to justify his first round status, even when they inevitably don’t get anything for him cuz they hold onto him too long.
Here’s Hahn’s offseason of additions. The majority of his choices have been a failure thus far and there’s two guys Hahn can currently hang his hat on in Colome and McCann. I’m not sure what he was expecting from most of these guys since outside of the two relievers, everyone else has been mediocre to bad in their careers or was ready for retirement in Santana’s case (likely Jay’s too).
Banuelos = 5.96 ERA
Nova = 7.04 ERA
Alonso = .625 OPS
Jay = hasn’t even suited up yet
Colome = 1.98 ERA
Herrera = 5.29 ERA
McCann = .995 OPS
Santana = 9.45 ERA and already released
Let’s hope Hahn stops making the same mistakes with Rodon and Jones. Once they get healthy, immediately trade them for whatever you can. Stop waiting for them to get inevitable injured.
