The Sox underestimated the player’s desire to get his market value. I remember news circulating that Machado wanted $300 million guaranteed, period. Some team was going to pony up the money eventually. The Sox sat on their hands with their $250 million guaranteed offer and didn’t budge because they wanted to sign a premier talent at their own team friendly price. It’s no surprise they whiffed and embarrassed themselves.
-
Yep. He was $50 million short on Machado and spent $50 million this offseason on mediocrity. I’d rather have signed Machado and a single starting pitcher than what Hahn did this offseason.
-
Yep, it was a good move without the hindsight. He was a 28 year old outfielder with multiple tools and was having a down season but he was really good the prior three seasons.
-
Yep, it has to be a guy who is still effective but the team wants to dump him due to salary concerns and perhaps a desire to rebuild. i just checked and didn’t realize Greinke is already 35. Yikes.
-
Or he was just a bust because of a hitch in his swing.
-
This is true. While one could argue his trades have been good, minus the worst of all for Shields, his free agent signings have been pretty awful. He likes to dumpster dive just like Kenny.
-
Yep, he was already property of the Sox and anyone thinking about Hahn’s guarantee of spending money was thinking about either Machado or Harper batting back-to-back with Eloy, not using some of the money to lock up a guy who was already locked up.
-
Was about to say this, haha. “See, I told you all that the money would be spent!”
-
Agreed, to some extent. If Kenny was still in charge, we would probably have wasted our last draft pick on Kyler Murray. Obviously, you can’t field a baseball team without drafting athletes who can play football. I’m glad some of the decision making has changed but Hahn is still just the lesser of two evils. He should have checked in with Uncle Jerry prior to promising the fans that he would spend money on top free agents.
-
He’s too busy ignoring the fact that there will be no one good left for the Sox to sign next offseason. “The money will be spent!!!”
-
Go work on your defense so you aren’t a below average player. ?
-
Nope, just pointing out prior statements.
-
I’m upset about this offseason, not 40 years ago. Is that okay?
-
Didn’t you also outline a way in which you justified Eloy getting paid the initial bogus rumor from Hector Gomez of $100 million, which made no sense as a legitimate amount of money to pay him instead of the Sox simply going through the salary arbitration process with Eloy?
-
You have over 151,000 posts on a Sox message board and you don’t care if the team ever wins? Your argument is that fans shouldn’t care that much about their favorite team losing. Then wouldn’t that make us all just like the fans of the “lovable losers” of years ago who would pack Wrigley even when their team sucked because they didn’t care whether their team won or lost?
-
It’s not just about Verlander. The current theme is that teams are extending their top players before they hit free agency — Arenado, Trout, Goldschmidt, Sale, Verlander, etc. Boegarts and Rendon are now the best guys available next offseason if they don’t get extended and they don’t really fit the Sox now with Moncada at 3B, Anderson at SS, and Madrigal expected to take over 2B eventually. This is why when you have targeted a premier player, you lock the guy up and don’t half-ass around with a team friendly offer like the Sox tried to do. The Sox will not have another shot at a 26 year old stud for $300 to $330 million. They blew it... period.
-
Where was that poster who kept arguing with me that missing out on Machado and Harper was no big deal because there would be so many good free agents to sign next offseason? ? The good options are dropping like flies.
-
He’s old and bad. Hope he stays in Charlotte. But I bet Renteria would love him.
-
Yep, that too. But that ridiculous $100 million dollar rumor never made any sense, regardless of inflation.
-
Yep, there will likely be savings. But there are varying levels of stardom. If Eloy isn’t the player that Kris Bryant is, the $43 million minimum may be what Eloy is worth.
-
I think I said this earlier but Kris Bryant will earn a total of around $70 to $75 million via salary arbitration year after year before he hits free agency. The Sox are definitely expecting Eloy to be a star. If he becomes one, it will be a good deal. If he doesn’t, it won’t be a very good deal. But the money won’t kill them either way. The Sox are obviously very concerned with risk and they are comfortable with giving out this type of money (see Luis Robert contract) but obviously not $300 million guaranteed.
-
He definitely has the build of a 1B/DH which is fine as long as he hits. Abreu isn’t getting any younger and we will need a 1B soon enough.
-
Hot take... he’s bad regardless of Spring Training. That’s not really going out on a limb. Next step will be seeing if he can be a reliever.
-
Did you erase last season from your memory when he was one of the worst starters in baseball? No one needs Spring Training stats to support this statement.
-
He must not have seen Giolito’s last outing. He’s bad.
