And yes, without Machado or Harper the entire offseason does indeed suck. $45 million wasted on a bunch of mediocre players for 1-2 years.
-
The I guess we should accept that the Sox will never sign a premier free agent because 10-13 years and $300-$330 million is the going rate for them.
-
So risk $100 million guaranteed for one extra year of control? How does that make sense?
-
This just feels like the Sox are spending money to save face with the fans after the Machado debacle. Then Hahn can say, “SEE, I told you we would spend the money!!!”
-
So don’t pay a proven player a reasonable AAV now because you are worried about paying unproven players in the future a high AAV that will be increased due to inflation?
-
So why not just sign Harper then? There’s always an excuse.
-
I believe you posted in the past that you would rip the Sox front office if they failed to sign Machado or Harper for a reasonable amount of money and $300 million was within that range for you. Now you are still defending the Sox front offseason and their $45 million of mediocre acquisitions. What gives?
-
If it was 2 or more years of control on Eloy, no one would be complaining. But $100 million guaranteed seems to be too much money and too much risk for only the rumored 1 extra year of control.
-
I’d rather see Palka get the at bats than either Jay or Alonso.
-
Our front office sucking is my point, not that free agents demand more money to come to the Sox. So I guess we are in agreement.
-
How so? To get them from 70 wins to 71? He was only a nice fit if it helped them sign Machado, which it obviously did not. Do you really think the Sox wouldn’t love to undo that signing if they had the hindsight of knowing they wouldn’t sign Machado? Why waste $4 million and limit at bats to a younger player. Hell, may as well give Engel more at bats in a non-competitive season. Jay would be a nice signing for a competitive team as a reserve guy at $2 to $3 million. The Sox overpayed him just to help acquire Machado and it didn’t work. There is no reason to waste at bats on him now.
-
No, it isn’t wrong. Money is money whether you spend it on the salary of players you acquire via trade or free agency. It means that Hahn misread the market by trading for those guys instead of spending less money on signing comparable free agents. Hahn actually did worse because he also gave up resources other than money in those trades. Colome too. He traded Narvaez for Colome and his $6-7 million dollars for this year.

I didn’t realize Kenny’s son posts here. Good to know.
-
And it failed miserably but keep trying. Maybe the next one will have some logic included.
-
Yes, totally the same situations. Eloy is worth every bit of $100 million guaranteed because he has proven himself in the majors. He is guaranteed to be the player Machado already is. It’s worth the financial risk for that extra one year of control. Your argument is absolutely terrible.
-
Jon Jay is maybe worth $2 million. He got $4 million. Adam Jones got $3 million. Alonso got $9 million. That is ridiculous. Nova is getting $9 million and several starters on par with him got paid half of that. Hahn overestimated the market. And if you aren’t going to go all out to lock up Machado, don’t bother signing all these scrubs.
-
How could any team that drafted Gordon Beckham and Carson Fulmer as first rounders and traded for Yoan Moncada just assume an unproven player will be worth $100 million when you don’t even have to risk that kind of money? Worst front office in the game.
-
Yes, this move for the amount of money rumored by Hector Gomez would make no sense for the Sox. It’s all risk and no reward. It’s a ton of extra money for one extra year of control. Eloy is still unproven and even if there is a low chance of him busting, there is still a chance he doesn’t perform as expected due to nagging injuries that he has shown he is frequently victim to. You only make a move like this if you get 2-3 extra years of control. Eloy gets $100 million guaranteed before seeing major league pitching and also gets to become a free agent again at age 29? And the Sox get to pay him too much for one extra year of control? After this offseason and seeing how Rick and Kenny operate, I would not be surprised if they proceed with this extremely questionable move.

This.

No Kenny, keep dreaming. He went to the team that offered him the most money, as most players do. The Sox were $50 million guaranteed short on their offer. Would you pass on $50 million more guaranteed dollars? No? Well neither did Machado. You don’t need a report. Simply use common sense. The Sox (KW) admitted afterwards that they couldn’t go that high on the guaranteed money. The Sox sat on their $250 million dollar deal for weeks and didn’t budge because they thought it was good enough and that’s why we were all painfully waiting for a signing that never happened. Manny held out and got what he wanted all along ($300 million guaranteed) from another team.
-
I don’t see how it makes any sense to overpay for a bunch of Eloy’s much cheaper arbitration years to lock up one additional year of his services. Won’t give 8 years and $300 million to a completely proven young star player but will give 8 years and $100 million to an unproven young player that you don’t need to? Yet another reason the Sox need new management if this true.
-
I know that Ron Fowler, A.J. Preller, Dan Lozano, and Manny Machado all love his sorry ass.
-
Without adding Machado or Harper this offseason, a Joc trade would now be asinine. After missing out on the big two, the Sox likely won’t be competing much this year or next year with or without Joc. Machado was good for 5-6 wins. Unless they locked Joc up long-term it doesn’t make sense. The Sox have enough OF prospects that they shouldn’t waste talent on two years of Joc.
-
This. The Sox front office has proven they won’t pay market value for premier free agents so expect only second tier free agents and “value” veteran retread acquisitions like we saw this offseason going forward. The young starters will have to hit at a high volume for the Sox rebuild to be successful.
-
Trying to use reason and logic to understand the Sox front office is a waste of time. They are clearly outmatched when it comes to free agency and trades. The Padres have both of the cornerstones that should be in Sox uniforms. Hahn should be embarrassed and go into hiding.
