I believe he blamed the tester and destroyed his career. Then later, he admitted to it.

I guess I would just rather have the sure thing 26 year old stud to go along with the rest of this young team. I’ve been a Sox fan for far too long and I’ve seen Kenny sign far too many retreads and hope they perform. Dye was a good one but they are few and far between.
-
Sure, but there are eventually diminishing returns when you sign guys in the 30+ age bracket.
-
Gio and Rodon could be out of the rotation by then but Kopech, Lopez, Cease, Dunning (after his TJ), Medeiros, Adams, etc. will all be given plenty of time in the rotation until they pitch their way out of it. The Sox loaded up on starting pitching so they wouldn’t have to pay for it.

Frank Catalanotto from Long Island, New York is who I thought you were referring to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Catalanotto “Despite not having Italian citizenship, Catalanotto's Italian heritage made him eligible to play for the Italian national team at the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic.” By the way, Manny Machado is Dominican-American, not Latin American. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manny_Machado https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominican_Americans

Pretty much the canned response for anyone who gets caught.
-
Sale, lol. The best FA options on that list are all pitching. The Sox should have the pitching. They will need position players. The majority of the position players available are a bunch of older options that will be declining for the life of the rebuild.
-
Why bother posting anything that guy says? He’s a sham.

Kenny and Hahn are sitting back and laughing to each other — why would you sign one player for $330 million for ten years when you could spend the same total amount on your next seven offseasons?!?
-
Agreed. But Harper will still likely be more valuable than all of the OF prospects not named Eloy and Robert. They can be used in trades too.
-
I would start with the same 4 year opt-out offer since Machado only got the much more team friendly 5 but if it took a 3 year opt-out to sign Harper over losing him to another team, I would give it to him. Dick Allen and I have already stated the obvious — 3 years of Harper is better than zero, and very likely better than the collection of mediocrity that Hahn would spend the money on in those 3 years. We have already seen what Hahn spent $45 million on this offseason after stating he wouldn’t throw money at stop-gaps.
-
It’s more or less deductive reasoning and a whole lot of hope. ?
-
Common sense says they should be. The cold harsh reality of poor team ownership and management says there aren’t.
-
Apparently, pretending to be “at the table” is as important as actually signing the free agent stud. ”Hey we tried! Now we get to bank all this extra payroll we didn’t spend!”
-
So you potentially have Harper for this season and not really competing and possibly only 2 more years in 2020 and 2021 when everyone expects the Sox to compete. Oh well. So be it. I wish we could all take a time machine trip to the future to see what junk Hahn and the Sox ultimately waste that $33 million a year on over the next two offseasons.
-
But that is pretty much already the reality if they miss on Harper. All the best free agents in the near future either aren’t as good as Machado and Harper or may be extended like Arenado by the time you think the Sox should have a shot at them. If the Sox are willing to match $330, give him the damn year 3 opt-out and steal him away from the Phillies at the last moment just like how the Padres embarrassed the Sox. If Harper leaves after 3 years, so be it. He will still be freeing up $33 million a year for the 7 following years to spend on other players. Yeah, it would suck to see him go, especially if he is hitting at his MVP level, but he doesn’t get to leave and also take all the money with him. Three years of a stud hitter is better than none. Also, we have already seen this offseason what Hahn spent $45 million on. I have no faith that he will spend $33 million on better player(s) going forward.
-
$330 is not crazy. And I still don’t understand what the big deal is with giving an opt-out. Having the guy for 3 years and then possibly leaving is still better than never having the player at all. Sure, Machado’s 5 year opt-out is team friendlier but whatever, 3 years of Harper is better than none and a bunch of mediocre free agents in his place for those 3 years — which is what will happen.
-
I like how you cherry pick the last 3 seasons to intentionally avoid Harper’s 2015 MVP season, lol. Rookie of the Year, 6x All Star, 1x MVP, and .900 career OPS. Yes, he is a megastar whether you want to admit it or not.
-
Okay, fine. Bogaerts hits free agency. Do you think he is a Sox target with Anderson locked up? Nope. You really want to pay big money to add a 32 year old first baseman to an extremely young core of players? You will be paying for his declining years. Good luck with that.
-
Because the majority are 30+ year old players who are complementary pieces and/or are not stars in their own right like Harper. Harper is a 26 year old star and perfectly fits in with the Sox youth movement for years to come. These guys don’t. It seems pretty obvious to me.
-
You are banking on waiting a year for a guy who may be extended by then. Bogaerts is another likely extension waiting to happen. And I hope you don’t want to sign a 32 year old Goldschmidt to a big deal. We already have an aging and declining first baseman.
-
I already did. Who is knocking your socks off in this list? https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-free-agents-for-2020-2021-and-2022/c-302396056
-
Indeed. It’s funny how by next offseason there could be zero good free agent position players available. Sox fans [and Hahn] who are defending the decision to not give $300 million guaranteed to Machado and claim there will be other targets to go after with that money are running out of options already for next offseason.
-
He just doesn’t move the needle for me when factoring in his age, power, and lack of star power. I never said he was a scrub but I wouldn’t want him over any of the trio of Machado, Harper, and Arenado and one of these three guys is still available.
