Ah thanks, I missed the key word “both”. if this is truly the case, perhaps they have a shot at Harper. But if they failed at Machado’s eventual price when the Padres paid up, I don’t see things changing when the Phillies inevitably pay up for Harper and it’s a number that is out of the Sox comfort level, just like Machado’s Padres deal.
-
I’m a bit confused by his quote and what he is trying to say. What is so crazy about having two different budgets/frameworks for two different players? And how is that crazier than signing Harper to a record-setting deal? Harper SHOULD get a record-setting deal and more than Machado as he will be a brand himself that will make whatever team he goes to a ton of money in ticket and merchandise sales and more. He will earn his contract wherever he goes, on and off the field.

Since the Sox weren’t expected to compete this year - with or without Machado - would anyone else rather have had Hahn not sign or trade for any of the guys in the list below this offseason and just give the extra $40 - $50 million in savings to Machado up front this year? Afterall, Hahn spent $45 million this offseason on two mediocre #4 starters, two good relievers, and three bench bats. Ivan Nova - $9 million (1 year) Yonder Alonso - $9 million (likely 1 year) Kelvin Herrera - $9 million (2 years) Alex Colome - $7.325 million (2 years) Jon Jay - $4 million (1 year) James McCann - $2.5 million (1 year) UPDATE: Ervin Santana - $4.5 million (1 year) - IF he makes the team ? Obviously, the Padres didn’t need to bring in friends and family (Alonso and Jay) to lure Machado in and both could have been replaced by Palka and Engel who were already on the current roster. Nova could have been replaced by Covey and the eventual call-up of Cease. If you don’t trade for Colome, you still have Narvaez as your backup catcher to Castillo and you don’t sign McCann. You miss out on two really good relievers but you give more innings to the young Sox relievers. Santana is a 36 year old starter who will try to stay healthy so he can be moved at the deadline for a warm body. Santana could have been replaced by any warm body in the Sox minors. For all of Hahn’s talk about not signing stop-gap players, that’s exactly what he has done this offseason. He appears to have planned poorly for his end goal of Machado and made some truly awful moves in general and in hindsight. I know I’d rather have one Machado this offseason than the mediocre list of players above.

The Padres were a last place team last year and landed Machado. The guy took the biggest and best offer. The Sox could have matched. They have the money. Machado on the team in 2020 and beyond gets the Sox much closer to being a legitimate contender than a Machado-less Sox team in 2020 and beyond.

Yes, we’ll see the Phillies come through on their promise and spend enough to land a whale and their fans will be pleased.

RON IN 2019: Thinking of cheering for the Cubs next year

Now use this same magic on Reinsdorf, Kenny, and Hahn! -

Definitely a troll job but you took it too far. Chicago White Sox stayed within the lines of what was acceptable. You have taunted and stomped on the line. -
But it’s only been one entire decade that the Sox have been awful. Anyone b****ing for over ten years hasn’t been fair to the Sox. 2005, 2006, and 2008 were good years.
-
What has Hahn done well that we should praise him for... or that you personally praise him for? Did you see what he spent $40+ million on this offseason? One really nice trade (Quintana) doesn’t make up for all the awful free agent signings, Tatis Jr. trade, whiffing on Machado, and seemingly neverending years of losing, which will continue this season.
-
Exactly. Machado considered the Sox this offseason but soon the Sox will be in the same position as the Bulls where top players won’t even think of them as a legitimate destination. Kenny and Hahn can be our GarPax.
-
Maybe they should because their decision-making is no better than the common fan’s.
-
And the Padres opt-out isn’t until 5 years into the deal? Wow... so even with that opt-out, you have Machado for 5 years within your expected window of competition AND he may leave for another team at age 31 and get the rest of his big money and declining years of production from another team? The opt-out at 5 years in could have been a blessing in disguise for the Sox. Man, the Sox are a dumb organization.

New promo... “The White Sox... changing lives since the 2019 offseason.”
-
No ridicule. You are 100% correct and I salute you. ?
-
Hahn, Kenny, and Reinsdorf all are to blame.
-
From what I remembered, the Padres weren’t one of the teams interested in Machado until more recently. Who knows... maybe if the Sox budge and raise their offer a bit from $250 million a few weeks ago they get Machado to sign before the Padres jumped in with their late to the party interest.

Updated with $/WAR: Every Hahn MLB Free Agent Signing since 2012/2013

Great post. You couldn’t get bamboozled worse than Hahn and Kenny did. Raising the fans expectations a year in advance was the best part so they ensured that they would eat shit for this epic failure for a long time. -

The best thing is that Hahn will have to own his crappy offseason and continue to lie and say that both Alonso and Jay were targets for the Sox because of their own talents and not due to their ties to Machado. -
Good point. Save on the family and friends and other mediocre players and you almost have that $50 million just for this year alone... just above $40 million actually.

Who is available in 2020? Looking ahead to the future
Moan4Yoan replied to BigSexy23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I will change it to Harper2Phillies. Or PinkSlips4KHahnny KHahnny = Kenny + Hahn. Kind of like GarPax. -
Yep, I can agree with this scenario.

I don’t buy this for a second. Agents always see if they can get a little more, or even get a match if one location is more desirable to their client than another. Where would the logic be in Lozano not checking in with the Sox one last time with the Padres offer prior to accepting it?
-
I could see it this way but also buy the Sox knowing the Padres offer was legit and just flat-out refusing to match cuz they hit what they deemed to be their acceptable dollar amount for Machado. Either way, I have no doubt Lozano informed the Sox of the Padres offer. He would be the worst agent ever if he didn’t and see if the Sox would match or even offer a bit more. I have no doubt Machado would be in Chicago if the Sox offered the exact same contract as the Padres.
