  1. The Mariners already signed him. https://www.mlb.com/news/carl-edwards-jr-signs-with-mariners
  2. But McCann caught Keuchel in college which cancels that out.
  3. Unless you are getting a guy like Iglesias or maybe Mercer, there aren’t many infielders that are likely to be worth nabbing over sticking with Mendick.
  4. If he is looking for a pillow contract to rebuild his value for a long-term deal next offseason, Puig will take the starter type offers from teams that will likely not make the playoffs.
  5. I am not a fan of Mazara either but if he’s the worst bat in the lineup, the Sox offense should be fine. The bigger question mark will be the pitching staff. Will guys like Cease and Lopez turn it around? Will the bullpen be good enough?
  6. Yes, if they add another righty bat with no glove, they would just have to keep Engel on the roster anyways. Leury is a joke in CF. I’d prefer Pillar as an upgrade to Engel.
  7. The Sox wanted a lefty bat. I wanted him too but I’m not sure if Benintendi was ever a realistic option. Also, the Sox may not have wanted to throw that much money and years at Castellanos when he is not a good defender. They acquired a cheaper, shorter term solution. Lefty hitters typically struggle with hitting left handed pitching but that’s just the downside you accept to have a bat that also gets to hit against the majority of righties who make up 75% of pitching in baseball.
  8. The new rule change that a reliever will be required to face at least three batters, or pitch to the end of the half-inning in which they enter the game, should minimize this a bit. Regardless, lefty / righty platoons worked before this rule change and they will probably work even better after this rule change.
  9. Offensively, Santana would be good but he apparently makes Mazara look like a gold glover in RF.
  10. Correct... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handed_specialist Starting with the 2020 season, all pitchers, whether starters or relievers, will be required to face at least three batters, or pitch to the end of the half-inning in which they enter the game. Exceptions will be allowed only for incapacitating injury or illness while pitching. According to MLB.com journalist Anthony Castrovince, "This will effectively end the so-called LOOGY (left-handed one-out guy) and other specialist roles in which pitchers are brought in for one very specific matchup."
  11. If Collins doesn’t make the roster, the Sox would still need someone to backup 1B, which Encarnacion can do.
  12. I think the Sox probably talked to Bumgarner’s agent and he simply wanted to stay on the west coast so they pivoted to Keuchel. Both the Sox and Twins were rumored to be in on Bumgarner... https://mobile.twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1202318280465305603 Also, Stone went from hyping up Bumgarner in one tweet to then talking up Keuchel right before Bumgarner signed with Arizona. It was like he knew Bumgarner wasn’t happening so he started hyping up the guy the Sox would target next.
  13. Thanks. I listened to this podcast and Stone hinted that he thinks the Sox will now make likely smaller moves and mentioned another outfielder (right-handed), and a reliever or two. Scott Merkin has said the same. As far as a stop-gap at 2B goes, Stone doesn’t think they will spend too much for one since Madrigal will be ready soon but he isn’t sure what will happen here. Chuck mentioned bringing back Yolmer, and also mentioned Kipnis and Dozier. Stone wasn’t sure if guys like Kipnis or Dozier would be amenable to coming here if they know Madrigal is coming up shortly. He also talked up Mendick playing 2B until Madrigal is ready and backing up Moncada at 3B. He also doesn’t think the Sox want to give 4 years to Castellanos or if they were ever really that interested in him to begin with.
  14. Yep, and I seriously doubt Stone not being signed means much. I have no doubt he will be back in the booth once a deal is worked out with him. They aren’t going to let Stone go before the first season of their competitive window.
  15. Here is the tweet: https://mobile.twitter.com/stevestone/status/1210394136873848835 At first when I read Stone’s tweet, I read the “Get It Yet” comment as if he was frustrated with the fans thinking the Sox were going after Puig and Castellanos and was telling them to just listen to him when he says they aren’t happening. After your post here, now I am reading the “Get It Yet” as a question to the fans to guess the correct target. ? This is why I hate the lack of punctuation on Twitter. ? I guess we’ll find out when he starts talking up a guy like Pillar or Pence in his upcoming tweets.
  16. Anyone who wants to keep McCann and trade Collins is basically valuing one year of McCann in a backup catcher role over 6 years of control of Collins. That simply makes no sense to me. One year of McCann simply isn’t worth giving up on Collins, even at the risk of him being a bust. Hell, McCann was a bust up until last year.
  17. Timmy’s tweet was a load of crap, just like 90% of his tweets. Yep, Hahn isn’t stupid enough to trade young talent for one year of Betts’ services.
  18. He didn’t say no Betts or no JDM! ?
  19. I’d prefer a guy who can still play some CF and RF. I doubt he can play CF but how is Pence’s RF defense these days?
  20. Steve Stone confirms — Castellanos it is! ?
  21. 89 plate appearances against lefties last season have people convinced Engel is a legit platoon option since he did this: .313 .360 .482 .841 Meanwhile, here are Engel’s career splits against lefties in 307 plate appearances: .252 .298 .381 .679
  22. The Mets just traded for Marisnick and he’s a terrible hitter. I would hope we do better than him as a righty OF option.
