This wait until next year to spend big stuff is a freaking joke. The front office must be hoping they can delay the supposed spending until fans simply forget about it.

It’s nonsensical if you are assuming that the Sox couldn’t have simply signed another outfielder with money alone for two years that could have performed just as well or possibly better than Mazara. Corey Dickerson for one.

Isn’t this just a further indictment of Mazara as a target? Mazara’s value dropped even more since last year because he had another mediocre season, not even accumulating 1 WAR, so we were able to acquire him more cheaply? ?

It is what it is and it’s not changing until Reinsdorf is gone. The Sox will never spend with the big boys until they get a new owner. Until then, Kenny and Hahn have to make bad trades for fliers and hope they pan out. Sure seems like a solid strategy to build a winner to me...

He’s been impressively consistent at being mediocre for the entire four seasons of his career. I’m sure he has upside at his age but what does that matter when he’s only under control for two seasons with Boras as his agent?

They must still be living on Mazara’s hype like Hahn is.

Read chw42’s post... Mazara hasn’t reached 1 WAR in any single season in his career. That’s putrid. You couldn’t do much worse if you tried.

We now have Mazara, a weak hitter and an even worse defender, for a whopping two seasons of control. Trust me, I am not Steele Walker’s biggest fan but as a RF acquisition in an offseason where the Sox supposedly have money to spend, the Sox just acquired one of the worst targets possible. This is the old school Kenny and Hahn move of patching a team together with castoffs from other teams, assuming they will magically pan out and be much better than they have shown in their career.

This is the problem with Kenny and Hahn over the years. They get obsessed with their flier targets that they think will turn into studs and never get over them. Sometimes it’s better to move on to bigger and better players. The freaking tunnel vision they have on some bad players is simply ridiculous.

Third tier starting pitchers?

Giving props for a guy the Sox likely won’t acquire anyways? Great idea. I just wish Hahn was as smart. This is a sad state of affairs.

I guess. But first, you are trading assets to acquire Mazara, then you are hoping he booms in 1 to 1.5 seasons so you can trade him for a decent return with only half a season to a full season of control left, which isn’t worth all that much. Also, his agent is Boras so if he does boom, he will likely be going to free agency and the team that acquires him will have slim hopes of extending him to a team friendly deal. I still don’t see much upside in trying to acquire Mazara to flip him.

I hope this is the case. Seems like a lot of smoke just to help [collude] with his buddy Daniels when there are already a few teams interested if the Sox interest is fake (Cardinals, Dbacks, Tigers, Marlins).

He’s a bad player either way and doesn’t improve the team all that much. What does the cost matter? The Sox have money to spend and should do better than Mazara for RF.

Yup, this is happening tomorrow. Jon Daniels’ quote has White Sox written all over it from their rumored interest in Mazara last season. According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers "expect to complete a trade" involving Nomar Mazara "as soon as Wednesday." The St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox are trying to land him. “We explored trades last year, but we didn’t find what I felt was a good fit for us,” Daniels said. “There have been certain clubs dating back to previous periods, we kind of know where fits might be.”

Between Hahn’s and Renteria’s comments and Hahn making a joke about the media talking to Jon Daniels, it makes me think Mazara is going to happen tomorrow. Yucky. ?

If Price doesn’t have Benintendi attached to him, I would pass.
