I'm a newbie here. Machado failure made me want to start an account. Did people actually think that the White Sox were going to sign both? LMFAO. The odds of that happening were about the same as Blockbuster Video announcing the opening of a thousand new stores across America.

2/23 ST Games, split vs. LAD and OAK
OneDog847 replied to caulfield12's topic in 2019 Season in Review
I'd rather watch a future Hall of Fame pitcher every 5 days than this so-called dumpster fire of a rebuild. Also, saying that this rebuild was going to take a long time is nothing but revisionist history at this point. The Sox had some major trade chips that should have accelerated the rebuild. The common denominator so far is that the Sox FO is bush league compared to the CHC and Houston. -
It ain't even the dollar store, dude. At least the products you get there are brand new. The White Sox go broke at the Goodwill.
-
I'm not sure if anyone around here is trying to throw the Cubs rebuild into anyone else's face. It is natural to compare the two since they both are going down in the same city. Most non-diehard Sox fans are gonna just say hey, the Cubs lost on purpose for a few years and everything turned out great, it should be easy for the Sox to do the same. Sure the Cubs got lucky in some areas. However, their ability to scout, evaluate, and develop young talent is not based on luck alone and they are very very good at it. You cannot successfully rebuild if you are bad at evaluating young talent.
-
I really hope you are right in regards to Moncada/Kopech. However, the present value of those two is probably less than one Fernando Tatis Jr.
-
This is a dumb rabbit hole to go down, but we know that the Sox were deep in talks with the Nats for Sale and ended up shipping out Eaton instead. Imagine if Juan Soto was included instead of Giolito.
-
Rick Hahn's work week is like 10 to 15 hours tops. Kenny's is even less. These dudes spend a ton of time on the golf course.
-
Not signing Harper/Machado coupled with all the prospect injuries have made competing in 2020 a real long shot. The only way I see them competing in 2020 is if they go crazy next offseason and spend 400 million plus on guys like Arenado, Sale/Cole, and Grandal. 2020 should hopefully be the last of the tank/developmental years.
-
The Sox are also doing this in the shadow of the Cubs rebuild. Theo took an extremely difficult process and made it look incredibly easy. There was always a sense that it was just a matter of time before the Cubs would become a wrecking ball. We are starting to see some warranted doubt creep in with the Sox rebuild. Another 100 loss season is a real possibility this year and getting to 500 in 2020 would probably be a minor miracle.
-
umm yeah no. This story was probably best kept in your mind. Also, you left out the M. Shamalyan twist part of the story, where is the Machado friends and family plan?
-
Ain't no reason to blame Jay, Alonso, or Machado. Alonso was traded for and he didn't have a no trade clause. Jay had someone offering 4 million instead of a minor league invite to Spring Training. Machado had an old Grandpa negotiating over how many at bats he would get almost a decade from now. The blame for the Machado debacle and the last ten years of White Sox failure is JR, Hahn, and KW. These dudes are turning the White Sox into the Cleveland Browns.
-
So based on these projections we are looking at something close to another 100 loss season?
-
The Sox front office could learn a thing or two from Preller. Just keep your mouth shut if you have 300 million dollars burning a hole in your wallet and strike like a ninja when the time is right. No need to hand out millions of dollars to your targets washed up buddies when you approach it this way.
-
Maybe the Padres will shock the world and sign Harper too? Yo, Preller here is a gameplan: Sign Harper for 5 years 175 million guaranteed. 100k bonus for every game that is a sell out at Petco. 20 million bonus if the Padres win one World Series while under contract. 50 million if they win two or more. Trade some of your gazillion prospects for Grienke, Kluber, and Rodon. Being a GM is easy on paper ;}
-
The Phillies better seal the deal quick. We are soon entering a period where a contender may say screw it and throw out a huge short term contract to Harper. Kershaw apparently just got shut down. Bad luck and unexpected stuff is gonna start happening soon.
-
Because that is not the way that Jerry Reinsdorf operates. He wants to dictate the terms of the contract and not the player/agent.
-
The answer you seek is in your first sentence.

Hahn has cemented himself as a certified dunce after the Machado debacle. It is insane that the Sox are gonna waste two valuable roster spots on these worthless stiffs during a rebuilding/evaluation year.
-
No way. Hahn and KW cooked up this little scheme all on their own. Jay and Alonso were brought on board a few months before Manny signed. I highly highly doubt that Manny/Lozano asked for them to be acquired. The Sox were never prepared to meet Manny's asking price and were playing kid games during the entire negotation process.
-
The whole Jay/Alonso situation is pretty fascinating. There also appears to be some real bad blood brewing between the Sox and Padres front offices. It seems pretty apparent now that Manny never asked the Sox to bring Alonso and Jay onboard. This was all some half cooked scheme by KHahn to lure Manny. They knew they would never get to Lozano's asking price for Manny and thought having his "crew" around would be an adequate substitution for millions of dollars.
-
Based on reports, JR was extremely involved in the Machado negotiations. I'm starting to think that JR wanted to finish second all along. He maybe would have done the $175 million for 7 years deal that was leaked by Levine/Olney but he had no intention of ever going above that. The $250 million dollar deal with incentives was leaked to Nightengale, who is a notorious KW mouthpiece, and could be a complete fabrication.

Marwin Gonzalez Signs with the Twins - 2 yr/21 mil

He makes a ton of sense for the Twinkies. That team could could actually win 85 games this year if a good amount of things go their way .
