I graded a C but would consider it C- and incomplete if that choice was offered. I favored the Vaughn/Sheets/Engel right field because we have them and wanted the money spent at 2nd base, SP, RP, and backup defensive catcher. Solid RP acquisitions are all that have been accomplished. No SP yet... an uninteresting 2nd base filler peace...and maybe a defensive catcher with promise in Ciuffo. I am still holding out hope that we move Kimbrel for something useful to get more accomplished in the next week.

Every time I see Leinenkugel mentioned I think of being in fishing boats in Wisconsin and seeing the signs promoting Leinenkugel being stuck in the bogs. I think it sold for $0.35 instead of $0.40 for the big-name brands like Schlitz & Hamms.

Makes sense. Other teams have some roster decisions to make the same as the WS. Three or four guys changing uniforms on most teams is to be expected. A change of scenery will do a few of them some good.

Don't put words in my mouth. My view is that the players working for Steve Cohen are not entitled to a larger paycheck than the player working for JR. Owners' individual wealth has nothing to do with the player's individual contracts. I understand that the owner's wealth enables some to overpay if they so desire while the poorest owners need to proceed with care.

The competitive nature thing is very real. It wasn't lost on me that the 8 players on the executive committee during the lockout voted to turn down the owner's offer. The players on the committee were probably chosen for their ardent views. The 8 executive committee members seemed to view the negotiations as a completion whereas the player themselves were not invested to that extent.

I agree 100%. Maslow was talking about basic needs like food and shelter. The $90M player is way beyond the basics.

I understand that there is another point of view...as in most things. My own view is that if I had $90M...what am I going to need with $30M more? I would always choose to play on a team where I like the players and manager and be in a city I like living in. Wheeler's wife and I would get along fine. As in Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory...once the basic necessities of life have been achieved (big homes, fancy cars, fabulous vacations, giving to charities, etc.) a person should want to like where he works.

Yep...but you are always one injury away from out of baseball. This bet on yourself is really macho...but guys like Chris Sale protected their families rather than their ego. During the lockout, we kept hearing about how short baseball careers can be. Gio should think long and hard before he gets overly greedy.

I had a similar experience when watching Hunter Pence III play for the Corpus Christi Hooks. You wouldn't need to ask a professional scout if he was any good. Talent in some players is obvious.

I'm an Engel fan but if that's what it takes to get out from under the Kimbrel deal...I'm in. The money that is tied up in Kimbrel has impeded the other needed acquisitions IMO.

I agree. The "eye test" gets scorned on Soxtalk but I prefer it to any other method of evaluation.

Interesting you say that about overmanaging. When he was here the first time that was my biggest gripe with him. So much so that I was glad to see him go. My impression last year was that he curbed that trait quite a bit.

He undoubtedly turned down the QO and the supposed WS offer on Boras's advice. Boras is good but people need to do what is best for themselves. I always admired Chris Sale for taking the early money and locking in the good life for his family. Remember..."Pigs get fat but hogs go to slaughter."
