  1. Can there be a hometown bias like in calling a batted ball a hit instead of an error?
  2. I read that Hank played against 22 teams in his career including 19 games against the WS. We are the only team of those 22 that he failed to hit an HR. Thought that was an interesting piece of nostalgia.
  3. Taillon looks a far cry from a sure thing with 2 TJ surgeries and 3 years since doing anything. The 4 guys going to Pitt look like nothing as well since none are coming from Tohanp 10 Yankees farmhands. If I was a betting man I don't think this deal helps anyone.
  4. I like this format. You mention the Yanks have a 50+ projected fWAR. Do you know the WS projected fWAR? I tried to find it myself but failed in my search.
  5. That's the thing that perplexes me. These numbers are arrived at by someone (who knows who) that make judgments about many things that are not quantifiable. Two announcers in the TV booth disagree on if a play was an error or not as an example. We as fans argue that player A is better than player B and use WAR as our argument. If it were really that easy trades would be a slam dunk. I want your 3 WAR player so here is the equivalent. But obviously, no one seems to think of WAR as being empirically correct unless it happens to suit their point of view.
  6. As an old school baseball fan, I relate to home runs, rbi's, sb's, runs scored, etc... WAR seems to track everything that happens everywhere on the field and grade it. How is this possible? Wouldn't that require dozens of watchers trained to score performance? It seems impossible to have all those scorekeepers using a fair and unbias system since we have trouble agreeing on an error call for example. Jose Abreu won the MVP but 3 position players had better WAR scores...why did Jose win? This question is not meant to be a clever way to say WAR is somehow BS. Some of you put great stock in it but I have trouble understanding why you value the opinions of people you don't know. I do see a usefulness for baseball executives having their own in-house grading systems but the average fan is lost when he tries to grasp what is WAR. Please try and explain in a clear non-condescending manner as I am sure many would like a better grasp of this subject.
  7. No room for Kopech means Katz has fixed Cease and Lopez...very impressive.
  8. LaStella had a war of .8 compared to Madrigal .5 according to MLB stats. Not much for a 6.6 million salary differential. Have you ever considered being a Yankee or Cubs fan? When everything our team does is "bi***" worthy it can't really be much fun for you.
  9. Yeah...those .340 hitters will mess you up every time.
  10. Yeah that all-star year where he hit 19 homers instead of his usual 3. What was that about?
  11. Who has legitimate sources is questioned every day on this site. Now you use them to authenticate our own opinions?
  12. This is how I see it since we passed on Q and show no interest in Bauer. Katz needs to be really good in order to fix Cease, Kopech, and Lopez.
  13. Good catch. We all like and quote certain statistics while avoiding others. Notice that no one ever uses the GG Nick won in Birmingham.
  14. There aren't many people on this forum that complain less than I do about anything. Most people think I have a positive attitude about the WS team in general. I have pointed out the small sample size in many posts...and it's effect on errors, base running, and BA. I haven't really harped much about those who use those arguments other than state my disagreement in what Madrigals value is. This forum is about expressing opinions and it is my opinion that Madrigal is and will be a very good ballplayer.
  15. I don't believe it. Madrigal has the highest OBP on the team. RH certainly knows that won't be easy to replace.
  16. For years before the DH teams buried lousy defensive players in left field. Many were lucky not to catch the ball with their heads (I know...some did). By comparison to some of those guys...Eloy is a gazelle. He catches the routine stuff and on occasion makes a nice play. He doesn't bother me a bit. Just the price we pay for the elite bat.
  17. I would offer him more than anyone else for a 1-year deal with an option. He needs to bet on himself having a productive year at this point in time.
  18. Mike Leake! bMag suggested we take a look at Leake a while back. I've been very interested since looking into him. For our needs, he would be perfect for holding down the fort until Kopech is ready. He's a small guy especially for a pitcher but has done the job adequately and wouldn't cost a bundle.
  19. We all have strong opinions but it is a real crapshoot.
  20. I don't disagree. My comment was meant to say I trust RH to get an extension on fair terms or be wise enough to trade a player while he still has value. I never want us to be in the Brandt position the Cubs find themselves in with any of our top players. You just can't end up empty-handed with that type of player. Better to trade them a year too early.
  21. Everyone should relax and take a breath. The off-season isn't over yet. Lot's of good players still available and no one knows what the FO is going to do. RH isn't talking it up with the next-door neighbor and JR for sure isn't giving his financial intentions to anyone. It's fun to speculate and play GM but our FO is one of the tightest lipped management groups in sports. My "guess" is something good will be happening soon. Keep the faith.?
