    I find it funny how the SECOND post in this thread was a very good reason for there not being any coverage, the beat writer is out battling cancer. So the paper seemingly has chosen to keep his spot open for him and are using the AP stories. It is only Spring Training afterall.

    But then we are treated to 3 full pages of the same old tired debate.

    Here's to hoping the beat writer gets well and gets rid of that damned cancer!!!

    Thanks, Kid. I was beginning to think I was invisible or something.

    I have notice in the Daily Southtown their has been no reports on the Sox the last few weeks from a beat writer ... They have been using the AP reports of the game..While the Cubs been having daily reports from their beat writer.. Does anyone know why this is...

    I think their guy has cancer. I'm serious about this. Joe Cowley is his name and he went public about last November. I know they've been running the same stories about the Sox this spring as the SunTimes has - they're sister companies. So, I'm sure Cowley's illness has caused them some problems with covering the Sox.

    I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Hawk and Stoney together.

    He definitely said Comcast for tomorrow. But a couple of weeks ago on one of his Score shows he said that his committment to the Score is on Monday, Thursday and Friday and he said he kept Wednesday open for a purpose, and the inference was that he'll eventually wind up on ESPN's Wednesday broadcasts.

    Wed., Jun. 22 --- Royals --- Senior Citizens Stroll the Bases

    It's seems they're running a subtle cross-promotion that night

    It's an afternoon game, and they often have seniors run the bases and pre game bingo on those days. As someone rapidly approaching that status, I take note of these things. "Outa my way sonny, I'm gonna Torii Hunter this guy!"

  5. QUOTE(winodj @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 11:30 AM)
    The reason I'm freakin out about it is because Brooks made some noise about "not needing" an organist last year. I think I read it in the Cubune.

    There was a quote in the USA Today about the Sox renting out the park for weddings, and in it, Brooks was talking about one of the options, which is Nancy playing the organ. Brooks said that the cost of Nancy for the wedding hadn't been determined yet, because "Nancy's priceless."

    So he seems pretty much a fan, or at least, sees her role as an asset. He's a smart guy!

  6. I know that Nancy is in the second year of a two year contract. Through the years the Sox have negotiated with her after the end of the season. I know that she is as happy with the Sox now as she has been for a long long time, because Rob Gallas is gone and because under Brook Boyer's regime she has been treated nicely. I really don't think that they are greasing the skids to let her go.

  7. Everyone has their own taste about ballpark music. I'm one of those old fogies who thinks that there's just a little too much canned music nowadays. So I'm happy to tell you that the Sox are going to have a day they're calling Nothing But Nancy Day. It's a Wednesday afternoon day, June 22 against KC, and it's gonna seem like the old days - if you're hearing music, it's Nancy.

    BTW, I've noticed that the Sox are goosing up their Wednesday promotions. One of their flyers indicates that if you rent a luxury suite on a Wednesday, you can get another during April and May at a discount. I think Brooks Boyer sees that the weekends take care of themselves, and Monday and Tuesday have half prices. Thursday has dollar dogs, so Wednesdays needed a little perking up.

  8. One of those companies that makes miniature replicas of ballparks sent me a flyer this week, naturally enough, selling their new miniature U.S. Cellular field. All blue seats. I'm imagining a team of artists with little brushes, feverishly repainting all the tiny seats green.

    Cannot hit rookies, lefties and pitchers we have never seen before.

    ;)

    But, Posednik and Pierzxcvdfjhi have seen him before. And Tad hasn't seen anybody before.

  10. I was there a lot. From 1984 to 1990 I went to every home game, and would almost always go to McCuddy's before the game for a few beers, and go into Comiskey when the doors opened.

    Frances McCuddy was the matriarch, and if you pissed her off, she would tell you, then you would leave. The place showed its age, the floor with small, cracked black and white tiles, but the bar itself and the cabinets behind the bar were well kept and sturdy. The bartenders were generally young relatives who were still in college - a lot of law students as I recall. They would have to chop the big blocks of ice used to keep the beer cold in plastic garbage cans. Frances once told me that whoever owned the Sox would determine what she could charge for beer, because they could cut off her supply. You never knew how much of what she said was true. I generally nodded.

    I was there when Thompson lifted a beer and promised to keep McCuddy's opened. Liar. I also got a brick when they demolished the place.

    Next door was another bar, O'Brien's, I think it was called. A little less old, and the Sox vendors would frequent that place rather than McCuddy's.

    There's a lot of ways that the new park's design was screwed up, and not honoring the tradition of McCuddy's was sure one for me.

    Nothing is official in ST, especially with how Ozzie chirps.  I don't think he remembers today what he said Monday.

    What's Spanish (or Guillenese) for 'windsock'?

  12. QUOTE(Wanne @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 04:46 AM)
    I absolutely remember that game and was there.  It was a lower deck shot South Side.  Actually he hit it into a fairly decent wind and I swear the thing didn't get more that 20 feet off the ground...it was a friggin screamin' line drive.  Yeah...Sparky was the s*** at that time too.  It's funny though because I don't remember there being any delay waiting for him...and I pretty much recall there were two outs when he batted.  The story said Tanner wanted him to hit with one out....so I guess that makes sense having to track him down.  I remember seein him sittin' in the dugout smokin cigs too.  That story's funny as hell.

    He's still my favorite White Sox player of all time!...I believe he hit the scoreboard at old Comisky too.

    I was there too. You're right about the homer, and I agree that it didn't seem like there was any delay, but Tanner was a good manager and probably had been looking for Allen long before he needed him. But nobody ever hit the scoreboard at old Comiskey.

    Allen did hit the centerfield bleachers, and only 7 people ever did that - Jimmie Foxx, Greenberg, Alex Johnson, Allen, Zisk, Tony Armas Senior and George Bell. Of those, all but Johnson and Armas also had roofshots at Old Comiskey. This is from the 1991 Sox media guide.

  13. Dykes was a superb fielder.

    About a month ago on ESPN news there was a field reporter talking about an NCAA basketball game, and the name of the reporter was Jimmy Dykes. That just can't be a coincidence. I'm guessing a grandson.

  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 02:11 AM)
    With all the focus being on Palmeiro, IRod and JuanGone I wonder if Canseco has implicated any of his ex-teamates with the Sox.  We may have to circle the wagons after this book comes out.  Just saying.

    Well, I just checked our roster from 2001 - this book could blow the lid off of Royce Clayton's career!
