  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 16, 2010 -> 02:44 PM) I'm not a scientist or an engineer, so I'm not sure what specific things he can/should do. But unless you're suggesting that he's no longer needed, there's SOMETHING he could be doing, like speaking to BP about his (our) concerns for longer than 20 minutes. And enforcing existing regulation would have prevented this thing from happening as well. Again, why would words on a piece of paper mean jack to a company that clearly skirted the rules and were allowed to because that oh-so-efficient government can't/won't/didn't do its job? Sweet. From now on these wells have to have a redundant blowout preventer. Hell, mandate they have 10 of them. That still requires the company to install it and the government to make sure that it gets installed. IMO there's an equal chance that this type of thing happens again because a blowout preventer fails and because a company gets greedy, works on the cheap, and the gov't fails to catch them. Sounds like a perfectly good argument for stopping this bloody deep oil drilling completely. And we seriously need to look past the President and BP's fault in this. We really need to look at ourselves. Who started using more public transit? Who started making and keeping more efficient residences? Who stopped buying fruits and vegetables from thousands of miles away? Nobody. I think we play this blame game to help us dismiss the fact that BP is really only providing a service that so many selfish individuals demand. We blame to cover up our own guilt. "It's those evil executives and politicians to blame! How could they do this!?!?! I'm so much better than them!"
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 15, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) Oh, the ironies of this post with a t w I S T of two years ago. The difference is, this guy is blowing it hard core and is still loved by the masses. The part you all want to gloss over is HE KNEW how bad this was day 3 - that's when all the offers of help started pouring in. What was he doing on day three? Flying on AFOne b****ing about AZ immigration and bashing Republicans for taking in part of the violence tendencies that this law was introducing. Negligence, baby. Barack Obama is 100% negligent. Period-io. What masses? It took Bush getting bogged down in two wars to have similar levels of popularity/unpopularity. Obama very well might not have been paying enough attention to this, but some mild statements about the Arizona immigration debate prove nothing (and of course he said nothing about Republicans, or violent tendancies). Democrats tended to oppose the Arizona law, big whoop.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 15, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) show me how any laws were broken. show me how he deviated from expected conduct of the President. Show me anything of any substance. Please. Since the election, Kap like so many others has become an abyss of negativism, narcissism, and knowitall-ism, there's little point in arguing with him. Has Obama made massive errors on this? Presumably. Is Obama, in comparison to previous Presidents (or other options in the 2008 election), bereft of the competence required to handle an issue like this. No, but no single individual, or organization could control such a cluster-f. Could this be such a terrible disaster that it could make Obama a one term President. Yes. But because he's been a competent President, he would leave a number of positive legacy items, even as a one term President.
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 15, 2010 -> 04:37 PM) Holy cripes, you guys should have heard the British news outlets talk about Obama and the way the US is handling this thing. They are ballistic. They talk I heard was not what I typically associated with England and the US. It calmed down a bit after Cameron had his talk with Obama but they are f***ing livid at the Obama administration and they refer to him as the Great Joke (instead of the Great Hope). The British citizens are getting killed as there retirements are heavily impacted by what the US government is asking for. I personally have a major long-term buy status on BP because they will recover from this and right now they are incredibly undervalued. However, I could be a complete dumbass and be wrong. I tend to believe people over-react. According to the poll(s) I've seen today, most Americans think Obama should be harder on BP, so it's not like Obama has an easy balance to strike. Are some of these Brits, and others invested in BP of no fault of their own? Because to me energy companies are always attractive investment options, but with difficult moral questions, and certain obvious risks.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) http://www.twiceright.com/2010/6/9/obama-w...us-news/by/alex First of all I didn't know Hugo Chavez was one of the most dangerous dictators in the world... That's laughable. And other than running into Chavez at some conference, I don't think Obama has ever actually met with a "dangerous dictator" without preconditions. Other than that I guess you can argue that he should meet the BP CEO, or that Obama's not following the words of his campaign (big surprise). But the two issues aren't really connected. And not that I'll convince anyone in this thread, but I think Obama has performed at a high level in international relations.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) Sigh. Has he been proven wrong?
  7. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/20...quinn-1361.html Brady leading Quinn in the polls Have any local Illinois pollsters looked at the race recently? That's probably what you should pay attention to.
  8. After watching Bobby tonight it is quite clear that he still has the stuff to close. It's all about location. And he had the tight slider working too. Didn't he use to have a pretty good 12 to 6 curve too?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 09:45 AM) Which is, of course, why she'll be the 2012 nominee. I strongly doubt the Republicans are going to nominate a facebook pundit. And if she does win Obama will crush her. If not god help us all.
  10. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 09:21 PM) Yup! Eric Holder's gonna settle the score. Terrorists? What law? Immygrants? What law? Oil? GET THEM M'FERS! I think Eric Holder's doing a good job so far, so there!

  12. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) 8th in baseball in wOBA, 8th in UZR/150 (plays arguable the most important defensive position on on the field and is #1 at that position), 7th in SB and 2nd in WAR to a firstbaseman. What the hell is wOBA and UZR? I get the point though.
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 03:05 PM) Of course. But he's starter worthy. Rios' May: .344/22/8/18/.406/.700/1.106 7 for 9 in stolen bases. Well above average defense at a premium position. Alex Rios, for all intents and purposes, has been the best all-around player in baseball to this point. Not sure about that, but I voted for him. He's my only All-Star White Sock. Ended up voting voting for Casey McGehee and Yadier Molina over Miguel Olivo. Sheesh AL's going to be better again. EDIT: And yah, everyone should just vote once. I'm not down with all this ballot stuffing nonsense. And it works against people like me who actually take the time to properly think through a ballot. Anyways, back to worrying about something that means something.
  14. True, but can't he be chosen by Girardi?
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 29, 2010 -> 10:14 PM) Really? They can't do anything without approval from our "boot on the neck" Obama administration. Your president told us so.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 26, 2010 -> 02:10 PM) Check out this major spin job by Yahoo sports: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-whitesox-ejections First, he dropped his glove. Second off, it'd be nice if they reported the facts and pointed out that the pickoff attempts were clearly not balks. Thanks for pointing that out. I figured that the yahoo article was accurate. Sounds like quite the interesting game.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 24, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) Way too much executive power, imo. Different systems aside, I think one of the big reasons Canada was able to get rid of its huge deficits in the 1990s was strong executive power. It's harder to make big decisions in a weak legislative system. I don't think I'd be opposed to the kind of line item veto that Obama is proposing.
  18. QUOTE (Soxy @ May 26, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) Big ups to my Senator (Amy Klobuchar) for calling out some of the sexist coverage of Kagan. I'm not a big Kagan fan, but I don't think she should be publicly critiqued for not sitting like a lady, dressing dowdy or playing softball. I kind of have a crush on Senator Klobuchar. Is that sexist? Or is that sexual harassment?

  21. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ May 19, 2010 -> 12:24 AM) Dynamics favor the insurgent in a runoff. Turnout usually drops by 20-30% and the people who come out aren't the people who are voting establishment. Bill Halter will be the Dem nominee from Arkansas I think. Oh yeah, Murtha's seat went to the DEM in the special election in 2008. This is the only district, by the way, that voted for Kerry in 2004 and McCain in 2008. If anti-Democrat sentiment can't win a GOP seat in a GOP leaning district this year, maybe the anti-Democrat sentiment is a bit overstated. Or maybe Critz was a good candidate...

    Meh. Both Howard and Cheadle are very forgettable in the role. That being said it's a pretty fun action movie. I didn't really dig Mickey Rourke's character. I'm still trying to figure out what his beef was, and I couldn't really figure out if he was a bad guy or a good guy. And all that stuff about the new element... chincy plot device that made my eyes gloss over.
