  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) Former (thank god!) NSA and Secretary of State Condi Rice gave some mind-bogglingly stupid answers to questions at Stanford U. during a talk last night. Video can be found at links. First, she comes out and says that Al Qaeda posed a bigger threat to the U.S. than Nazi Germany... On another torture related question...she literally gave the "if the President does it, it's not illegal" defense. If the President says it's ok, it doesn't matter what it is...it's ok. This woman was one of the most powerful people in the world for 8 years. Despite these shyte answers I'd still say that Cheney and Addington make Condi and her staff look like pacifists in comparison.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) Dick Cheney. You must have read this op-ed today. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/28/opinion/...uthat.html?_r=1
  3. It seems to me that the current head of the Pakistani army is perceived to be a pretty competent guy. Hopefully if worse comes to worst the army will be able to keep the important regions in check. What happened to that lawyer revolution or whatever? The guys in suits. I thought Pakistan had a large middle class. A group that is not amenable to radical ideas? Or is the economy totally screwing that over too?
  4. Damnit I have a presentation to give tonight, and an assignment due tommorow. No time to follow the opener! I'll try anyways.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 01:42 AM) Hmmm. Two interesting pictures, IMO. First, capitalism is organized crime? WTF? Yea, yea, fringe loonies, and DukeNukeEm. Okay. You know, though, that's JUST the message that Democrats are sending. After this week, it's pretty much proven. But I have to love the OBAMAMania! that is taking place, and I think this picture displays it nicely. I understand the "history" and all, but holy s***... this guy IS a rock star, just like I was mocking last summer. IMO, his Leno appearance is tacky, at best, forget the "special olympics" comment, which is stupid to even be discussing anyway other then the fact of the hypocracy as I noted in another thread. Dumb comment, but not worth the stupidity coming from the right about it. My point remains, this guy loves the attention and is one very arrogant man. Obviously you haven't heard about the Canadian Prime Minister. His Christmas card two years back was a picture of himself, looking at a bunch of pictures of himself. He also changed the pictures in the government caucus room from past leaders and Prime Ministers, to only pictures of himself. http://web.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto.../WBwblogolitics
  6. Lot of Canadians are kind of ticked off at this segment on Fox News' Red Eye. Especially in light of this.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) As agent Moss said to Jack Bauer, it's the rules that make us better. Ha! Moss is a moron. The show is only like 13 hours old and Moss has already been fooled like 20 times. 24 is terrible, yet I just keep watching...
  8. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 13, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) Now that Obama has the controls, let's see what HE does to the US Attorneys, and how it's treated in the press. Does he fire some like Bush and get accused of playing politcs, of fire them all and be ignored by the media like Clinton. WaPo wonders which it will be. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...9031203736.html Meanwhile he has already sought to replace one of his more vocal ctitics, Missouri US Attorney Catherine Hanaway, with St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney and Democrat Bob McCulloch, who was one of the members of Obama’s un-American threat to free political speech called the “truth squad” that made the news during the campaign. McCulloch claimed during the campaign that he thought it was a good idea to use the law to attack Obama’s political opponents. http://www.ksdk.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=169660 I don't really understand this. It seems like Obama is legally allowed to replace these US Attorneys, but why was Bush not allowed to do the same?
  9. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 12, 2009 -> 08:28 PM) Oh, so today instead of "catastrophe" and all this gloom and doom bulls*** to get his pet bill passed, now things aren't so bad? Why is that? Oh, so we can spend more money to get health care done. Right. Got it. He DOESN'T care... except how this will keep his poll numbers up somehow. And I didn't like McCain, but he wasn't someone who is taking the country as far left as the US can stand. Bit by bit... I hope you all like France's politics. Because here we come. Name 5 things you don't like about France's politics that Obama is trying to duplicate.
  10. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 04:50 AM) So, if he does it just a little bit, as long as it's less than W, and as long as it is for the good of the people, that's ok. Yeah, It's always different. Pretty much the response I expected. Actually that's not what I said at all. What I really said was, only time will tell whether Obama decides to use signing statements in a more limited way.
  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) I seem to recall Dems being all up in arms about Bush and his 'signing statements'. How will those same people react to this? Obama says he will do it, but smarter, and slightly different. Obama is pretty much saying 'hey, go ahead and vote for this bill, I'll just tell my peeps to disregard that little portion that bothers you'. Anything to get a vote, I guess. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/20...-will-igno.html Actions will speak louder then words on this issue. Signing statements can be appropriate when small parts of very large bills are deemed unconstitutional by the President. So instead of a very large bill being vetoed, only a small portion will be. We'll have to see how often Obama decides to do this though... Bush used this more often than anyone ever has, particularly because of the bizarre constitutional views of his administration.
  12. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) im interested to get some takes on this. are any of the following items, socialistic (if that's even a word) - public education - police departments - fire departments - public hospitals - military defense - homeland security - libraries - park districts - water/sewage departments and if not, how is "socialized medicine" any different then say, "socialized police protection" None of those things in and of themselves are socialist I wouldn't think. I don't know what the hell all this "socialism" nonsense is. Part of the ideology of socialism is the equality of condition... I don't see that with Obama. Maybe equality of opportunity.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 26, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) Del Toro is the new Jim Henson if you ask me. With quite a twisted side, of course. This isn't directed by Del Toro by the way, so don't get too excited.
  14. Political Studies and Public Administration.
  15. I remember some joker putting word bubbles for KW and Cooper. Saying "Great Form" and "Nice Ass". lol
  16. I'm not one to be easily offended and kind of doubt that the cartoon was meant to be offensive. But I just don't understand the link between the ramagin' chimpanzee and the stimulus bill. The cartoon doesn't make any sense.
  17. This may be nothing more than a passing interest kind of things but here's Obama's first interview with Canadian media since becoming Prez. It seems that it was pretty well received up here, but there's wasn't anything particularly mindblowing, and the CBC isn't exactly al-Arabiyah.
  18. Obama's coming to Canada on Thursday, and needless to say this is all the Canadian media can talk about these last couple of days.
  19. I think the Frontline episode tonight will be talking about the near collapse you guys were talking about earlier. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meltdown/

    Very impressed with Taken.
  21. I imagine Brian Anderson will be on the opening day roster either way.
  22. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Feb 2, 2009 -> 12:50 AM) I believe Cuba is technically one of the few "Second World" countries that actually remain. Yah, that's interesting, and what I thought of when I saw what cubano wrote... Developing country would probably be the proper term.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2009 -> 11:10 AM) There is an old Vulcan proverb. Only Nixon could go to China. I think I'm thinking the same thing. One might assume that because Netanyahu is a hawk that he'd be more reluctant to get any kind of peace deal, but things often run counter to expectations. So who knows...
  24. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 11:43 PM) I find this beyond stupid, did not laugh once. No way. Usually I'm not a fan of comedy in musical format but this is both catchy and funny. And Jamie-Lynn looks great.
  25. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) Interesting, I thought Lugar already declined? He's fully qualified and probably the best for the job, though. What's this declining nonsense? My impression from up here in the north was that if the President asks you to do something you do it. Another impression I often have is, that if you say you're declining, what's really happened is you've been told you're not going to be picked.
