If paying superstars lots of money because they might go into slumps is wasting money, what do you consider paying less money to bad players who end up, in fact, being bad?
-
That’s completely not the point. Two of those guys have “scrap” level ceilings, while the other two were acquired with much higher ceilings in mind. The fact that they are all likely to end up as scraps is irrelevant to the initial point, which was that Getz did not “dump Kopech for peanuts” because he thought he was getting much much more than that in Vargas.
-
If you’re saying that Getz knew Vargas was “scraps”, you’re giving him way too much credit.
-
And one of the reasons relievers are considered so volatile year to year is that they’re working within the constraints of relatively small sample sizes by nature.
-
You keep saying they sold him for peanuts because that’s what Vargas’ value looks like after the fact, but they legitimately thought they were getting a big piece back in Vargas. That trade speaks more to their (likely) swing and miss on Vargas than it does to what they thought of Kopech.

Some of these schmoes just don’t appreciate the true power of magic.

BREAKING: Getz acquires Juan Soto one soda.

Just wait until tomorrow when they sign Soto.

To be fair, I was referencing Rick Morrissey’s column that Lip linked, not anyone here.

Kind of an odd take. Who are all these quality, experienced, yet currently unemployed candidates?
-
It was 80% tongue in cheek, 20% sports fans are irrational idiots (including me)

My simple take: On paper, this is a step in the right direction. Now show us more. I look forward to being yelled at about this opinion.

You answered your own non-question.

Grady out of the running per Bob Edit: Albernaz is the third name if you don’t wanna click the link.

Eh, I’d still take Chicago summers over Miami summers

I feel like there are enough smart baseball people in MLB orgs that can identify talent and potential and separate the manager from the situation they’ve been put in.

One Obvious Move Completed - Analytics Overhauled
Snopek replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
What's funny is that I think we're probably pretty close fundamentally in terms of being skeptical of moves, not giving the org the benefit of the doubt and needing to see actual improvement and results before feeling optimistic about the direction things are headed (aka standard "being a sox fan" stuff). But then I see the bolded phrases above and wonder if we're even reading the same thread. I just reread the whole thing and don't see anything remotely close to people doing that. -
Yeah, I don't really get that one.

One Obvious Move Completed - Analytics Overhauled

Hey we agree! There’s a huge swath of middle ground between the two extremes of 1) instantly praising or trusting moves they make and 2) being proactively angry about any and every move. I’m just wondering what big measures you’re realistically hoping to see this offseason. -

So, nothing? (Signing Soto is not a realistic move) -

Serious question for those who strongly believe this: Short of JR being removed from the picture, exactly what kind of moves are you hoping to see that won’t be met with layers upon layers of snark? I completely understand not instantly celebrating the moves or giving the org the benefit of the doubt, because they don’t deserve either, but what it is a realistic move in your eyes that wouldn’t warrant an instant roll of the eyes and dismissal of said move? -
7) Both had Bo Jackson

Jerry Reinsdorf open to selling the White Sox per Britt Ghiroli
Snopek replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yeah that basically sums it up for me. - The title was great as a fan. - The team was legitimately great for that season. (You can’t really argue with going wire to wire in the regular season, then dominating the postseason.) - That team was also a fluke in the greater context of things. - That team also further solidified JR’s belief that doing things his way was the correct way, thus setting the organization up to be the failure that it has been since. All of these things can be true at the same time. -

The move talk definitely does give off a certain vibe -
And he also said earlier in the year that AJ was emerging as a serious candidate to replace Grifol. Look, obviously you can put as much meaning as you want behind what’s reported or not reported and what you think was leaked or not leaked, but personally I just don’t see the point.
