Boy that was a bad game. Pathetic again. That record is beyond belief. I know we've said it before but loss after loss. It's just unbelievable. Reinsdorf is lucky the media is dead. If this were the era with real columnists at the papers he'd be blasted daily. Like the Mariotti era. I bet even Royko woulda went after JR even tho he loves the Cubs.

Thank u. I actually watched the first 2 1/2 quarters on BR TV. My comments: Wow. I did not know we got two transfers in the running back from Marian Catholic (sorry I don't know names don't mean to offend) and the tall receiver I think they said was from St. Rita or somewhere. Or maybe another RB was from Rita. My observations: Can't tell much cause poor Phillips had nothing BUT Rice looked bigger than past years to me which is a good sign and also the QB (is he only a junior?) played a much better game than anybody I've seen at Rice in a long time. The early play where he rolled out and found the tall receiver for a score (called back for penalty) was pretty special. No. 9 on defense resembles some of the stud defenders Rice seems to have every year. That kid took the ball from the Phillips QB and scored I think. Hearing that we got all these transfers makes me feel good that we might be able to play with the big boys. I have to reserve all judgments because of the competition, but I thought the boys played great albeit against a miserable team. The offensive line seemed good to me and the defense was outstanding all around. What did u think of the game 2023? Is that Marian Catholic RB the real deal or not? Seemed like the QB has good vision and has a lot of tools for a h.s. QB. Congrats to Q and the players. Running clock in second half musta got u out of stadium earlier than normal. -
Chet Lemon in bad shape from multiple strokes
greg775 replied to The Mighty Mite's topic in Pale Hose Talk
So sad. He could cover so much ground. One time in Comiskey somebody hit a shot to right center. Chet started out so far away from the ball. He wasn't in the camera shot at all. Then suddenly he dives and gets it. I was at an event once that Chet was at and got to visit with him. I actually asked him about that play and he described it and remembered it. He modestly admitted he made some great catches in his career. Of course he hit the ball as anybody on the Hitmen in 77. I remember imitating not only hit batting stance but the way he pounded his mitt on his thigh waiting for high flies to come land in his mitt. Favorite player by far. Very sad story. Best wishes. -

Big, tough kids I bet. Hopefully Rice will set the tone with a nice win over Phillips. -
Vaughn is struggling again, average down to .240 after a 'fair' month or so.
-
4-37? That's really bad. That has to be an all time futility record for a 41 game stretch. I mean it proves (again) this is not a big league team/franchise.

Poor Pham can't hit anymore. Nicky ... sad saga. Local guy who people say is a really nice guy made some money in baseball and got the most out of his ability. Just can't hit.
-
What's with our bats against Texas? Are their pitchers good? I feel sorry for Vaughn again 0-for-9. My gawd. He should have called in sick. Folks I bet there were not 500 people in the park for Game One. Nobody ever counts the actual amount of people. Check the highlights. Nobody was in there. Did any of u go? Was there even 1000 fans? I seriously doubt it. Think about it. Wednesday. School in session. Horrible team. Only a few retirees would go if they saved up money for their retirements. Can you imagine the clubhouse after game two after that catch? It's like WTF do we gotta do. That ball was CRUSHED.

I wonder how the kids get to and from school. I can see a kid wanting to play on a sure fire state champ team and getting scouted every week but I'd also hate having to get up at 4 a.m. to get to school on time. -

Best luck to your son. Does he like Rice and coach Q? Is he a freshman? A starter you said? -

Why are Carmel and Loyola great every year? Seriously? What's their secret? Do they 'recruit' linemen and bus them into school? Or what's alleged as the reason? It can't be just that star kids live in their district can it? I know talent wins. Lawrence High in Kansas about 20 years ago used to win state every year or close to it. When the schools split to two high schools ... they haven't even reached the state finals and usually get knocked out early. It's simple. The talent is split between two schools and the powerhouse is gone. So we have to assume Carmel and Loyola have incredible talent. Where's it coming from? -

Has there ever been talk of a.) merging Rice and McAuley to have a large school with plenty of campus space? Or b.) merging Rice and McAuley with Marist which is right down the block and use the Rice/McAuley large campus and sell Marist to a company that builds condos? -
And that is why greg is always in favor of the traditional way of having a good team. Draft guys, make some trades, whatever, but never have to gut your whole roster in "tanking." What if Robert was as good a hitter as Witt? What if we had Sale and Crochet on the same staff, on and on. Wonder if the Bears' new QB is football's equivalent of Witt.

To my fellow Rice guys on here: I have a few questions. 1. Is that linebacker Pierce the real deal? Does he have good players around him on defense? 2. What's with the schedule? First of all Phillips went 6-6 last year. Are they any good? If we lose to them we could easily be 0-4 with Marist, Rita and Loyola to follow. Then we beat St. Pats, lose to Mt Carmel and are 1-5. Then we win out over Niles, St. Laurence and Ignatius to go 4-5 and miss playoffs. If we beat Phillips we go 5-4 again. What's with the tough schedule? 3. Who's the QB this year? What year is he and does he have receivers? Any playmakers on offense? 4. What's up with coach Q? Is he beloved? Has he become a Rice institution or is he considered just OK? 5. Has Rice 'recruited' anybody that's highly regarded in ftball or bball for this season? Thank u. p.s. I was assuming the loss to Marist cause isn't their enrollment way higher than Rice? -

If you go to a football game do you park at McAuley and walk over? Do you ever have to go all the way to the St. Xavier parking lot across the street from Q of M? -
Guys, the Royals talent is not good. Why them and not us?
-
Two things: Caulfield, geez, how could you give up sports for a girl? At that age? I'd have killed (not really killed) to continue on in sports and not get cut (back then there were too many kids; above average talent got cut regularly). I had to run track and cross country in h.s. cause I got cut from baseball and basketball at Br. Rice which had over 2000 boys I think compared to 500ish now. Cross country was not fun ... case closed.

Well it was the boomers' parents who decided to raise their kids this way. And so they did. What's the name for boomers' parents generation? That generation really liked to drink, too. My dad got pulled over a lot and never got called into court (connections on the south side).
-
It's almost like u lived in my house CaliSoxFan. Everything u say was my childhood. crazy. Don't forget we had a dog, too, til the parents sent poor Spot "to the farm where he can lead a better life" for running amok too much.

As the game approaches. ... I bet Pedro Grifol is so happy he doesn't have to write out the lineup card. He can count his money. I'm sure he had a nice settlement. I bet even Ozzie is glad he's not skipper of this bunch. Finally I bet even Hawk is glad he is not announcing tonight. Hey Lip: Was Hawk forced to quit? Peace out.

That coach is probably going to be punched out by the pitcher's dad. Sad story here but very common I'm sure. As far as parents never going to our games or practices back in the day, I thought it was great. And the above mentioned scenario described our household perfectly. Four kids close in age, only dad worked, he never came home or rarely came home, just like the person explained in this thread. None of my teammates' parents ever came to games either. I do remember however when my team made the Mt. Greenwood world series my dad came to Game One as I recall and that was it. And when my grade school played for the city title I think he might have come. But I swear parents didn't ever ask how I did at the plate or on the court. They never asked if we won or lost, etc. Same with my teammates. Nobody cared as we were parent-less which was fine with us. Looking back now you'd think they'd at least wonder if we won or lost and if their kid was doing ok or was an abject failure at sports.
-
Maybe Jerry will be upset fans are upset and move the team on his own. He probably thinks the fans have no right to be mad, just happy there's a team at 35th and Shields. Sox are benefiting from media not caring about the other team in Chicago. Nobody's yet asked anybody important about possibly contracting teams not trying to win.

Tommy Pham is 3-for-32 over several games for St. Looie. Fedde pitched well today in a victory. Do you think Fedde has 5 years left in him? Is Pham going the Abreu route? Release him soon?
-
Yeah but who can blame him? Nobody. I can only imagine how bad it is for them to come to work everyday. here's yet another series they've already dropped 3 and may lose all 4 to a team. It's happening over and over. Unprecedented. Those players have to be numb.
