One Obvious Move Completed - Analytics Overhauled
greg775 replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hmmm, Anderson's career is over at a young age. Was he a reliable SS? No. He was far from a vaccuum at SS. Catcher? Uh he had a good arm, checks that box. He was similar height and wt to other catchers. Check that box. Yes IMO he was a prime candidate to be a catcher. He was a failure at SS. Botched too many routine plays while occasionally making the spectacular. -

Do you at least agree there will be no reasonable criteria for the 5-inning wonders, the starters? W/L? No way. K's? Why, all starters have the great heater and cutter which means they ALL will be the same strikeout artists. ERA to be the Hall standard? Please. Why can nobody answer my questions. -

I dunno bout that. Starters: You have to agree 5 innings is a long outing nowadays. That leaves 4 innings where a LOT can and does happen. So the best starters still get very few wins. W/L meaningless. So that leaves K's. Frankly the five inning wonders all are gonna strike out a TON of batters. Hence a zillion pitchers with a lot of strikeouts. That means nobody outshines anybody else. 10 strikeouts to 12 in five innings will be average to decent. ... Now middle relievers that go one or two innings. Hall of Fame consideration LOL. Finally the guys who work the 8th and 9th. Roles will change with different guys on staffs closing, meaning 20-30 saves a season will be the upper echelon of guys. Not exactly Bruce Sutter territory. Let's face it. Bye bye pitchers for the Hall cept for a few current guys who only recently joined the 5-inning club. -

Goose said in the tape there will be no more Hall of Fame pitchers cause of lack of wins when you only go five. Again, my opinion supported by a Hall of Famer. -

You guys are a tough crowd. This is a Hall of Fame reliever and his thoughts mirror mine. Ever think current health trends are caused by changing the methods that were used in Goose's era? At least I have a Hall of Famer backing my position universally mocked on the board here. Next thing you know somebody famous will say Tim Anderson shoulda been a catcher (good arm, very inconsistent at SS). I'm just saying I'm not as stupid as many think I am and this Gossage tape proves it. -

Nope. I won't use Goose's cuss words but listen to at least the first eight minutes please. He tears apart the modern athlete and pitcher and obliterates the commissioner and all analytics. He talks about how baseball pitchers train wrong, lift too many weights. He laments it all. And despises Yankees' Cashman and analytics. He basically said all players are very soft. ... When you listen to Goose you will hear greg and I'm often lambasted on here as not having a clue. He also repeats my mantra of WHO IS GONNA MAKE THE HALL OF FAME IN THE FUTURE?? You'd think I was Goose with similar arguments. Apologies from anybody coming? I got a Hall of Famer and Sox great on my side. -

I didn't want to start a new thread on this lest anybody get mad, but I often get blasted on here for my old-school lamentations about the demise of baseball. I challenge you all to listen to former White Sox great Goose Gossage and listen to his tearing apart analytics and the ruination of a once great sport. In fact I'd like to say I'm in good company with Goose Gossage since he's basically listing all the reasons greg despises baseball. I love the way Goose rips the 'five inning guys.' Caveat: Bad language in the video. ... What do you think about Goose's arguments/my arguments? -
I don't like Jerry at all but in this climate he'd be so dumb to put any money in the project much less 1.3 billion. With TV networks going broke like Ballys and the world as unstable as it has ever been if you are Jerry you should gladly keep all the money you already have in life and also sell the team and have all that additional money. I wouldn't say everybody in 20 years would make good money at the new stadium project. Not in this economy, not in this world.

Lack of common sense regarding new stadia floors me. Sox should move to western suburbia and build a nice complex in Naperville or Lisle or Arlington Park if they must. If it's Arlington Park partner with the Bears in a huge Cowboys like complex. Or just stay in Bridgeport and fix up the current stadia. ... This is just as the Royals should remain in their complex with the Chiefs because of CONVENIENCE for fans regarding parking and getting to the games! Moving downtown is so dumb.

Dick Allen, Tommy John up for HOF Consideration
greg775 replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Even Britt Burns went a full nine innings vs Orioles in the playoff game four. He might have even given up the homer in the 10th. Now ... LOL, five inning wonders. -

225 wins will not get Greinke in unless a ton of starters in the 200-220 range get in before him. No way on Scherzer at 216 wins. And no way on Verlander at 260. -

Dick Allen obviously deserves to be in the Hall. Tommy John? Compared to today's starters he's Cy Young. Put.Him.In.The.Hall. Better put in a bunch of past stars cause only 3-4 guys from today's era will ever sniff the Hall. Ohtani and who else, lol. They ought to have a category in the Hall called the "Lift and Pull Hall of Famers." You get credit for HRs and strikeouts both. -
Yeah but Venable has to coach these stiffs. His whole reputation is ruined after they lose 110 or so. They can't pay a person enough to watch this kind of baseball day in and out. Why not wait for a real team to offer??
-
I like Ray Ray's posts cause they are relentless in blasting the Sox. And the Sox deserve all the negativity out there. True a manager doesn't really matter in the big scheme of things but we can hope this new manager will at least 'remind' Getz and other front office types how bad these players are when they catch heat for losing 15 in a row in April or May. Little surprised the new manager would take this job with such a poor roster. Venable knows how bad these players really are.

Illinois High School Football Thread
greg775 replied to Y2Jimmy0's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
You were right all along about the line. I watched the replay and Rice ran out of gas on the season. They looked lost as you said about QB ball management. Coaches deserve blame too as they didn't even try an onside kick after the safety if that indeed is allowed which I think it is. So Fenwick just ran out the clock. Something about Fenwick's defense had the BR team intimidated. Rice pretty much had no chance on offense. I wish it was a Friday night lights game. Not sure why they had to play on a Saturday. Rice looked dead in the afternoon sun. I assume DGN will pound Fenwick at home unless they also get the Saturday blues. -
Lot of things don't make sense. Can you imagine trying to sell season tickets for this team? How you gonna win without free agents to go with 2-3 average players on the current 40 man?
-
You gave good rebuttals to my plan but at least it's a doable plan if Jerry would release the funds to sign the guys in the areas I suggest. You guys may disagree but KC did spend last offseason on some guys that worked out and helped them make the playoffs and win a playoff game vs the Yankees. I would think our new manager would welcome some 'plans' rather than take the field with a 110-loss club in 2025.
-
I meant scouts who could identify talent and stress to the decision makers/Getz that we should sign those two. Those two might have really helped the Sox starting rotation which already had Crochet.
-
To say "never" is inaccurate and kind of insulting at least to me. I can accept your second part of the first paragraph saying "rarely" even if I disagree with it. Trust me I read responses to my posts for sure. I do. Why else would I be on here. I've learned a lot of things and always try to give a like or fire symbol to good posts. Check out how many I've liked. Tons. I think my post mentioning Lugo/Wacha for instance contributed something here.
-
Q: Couldn't the Sox have signed Wacha and Lugo with better scouts?
-
That's not very nice. I feel mods shouldn't mock readers/Sox fans but that's just me. Admitting to mockery is not conducive to good message board business by mods IMO.
-
Quin named some for me.
-
Good post but the Royals who were horrific in 2023 were able to sign some studs for 2024. Same now with the Sox. Good manager attracts players if you have some $$.

Soto wants 700 million. The way ballplayers go on extended slumps nowadays since they refuse to cut down their swings with two strikes, instead they'd rather continue to try to hit a bomb or whiff on a ball in the dirt, I don't think any player is worth near that. You'd have to have rocks in your head to pay any ballplayer not named Ohtani 500-700 million. I don't even blame Jerry for refusing to pay those kind of contracts. Look at Judge. he was one of the worst players in the entire postseason and he makes 360 mill over 9 years. Wasted money.

True Lip, but we now have a good respected manager.
