  1. Yeah - shifts in the NHL used to last for several minutes at a time back before the ‘80’s. Back before the ‘70’s, you had to serve your full 2 minutes for penalties, regardless of whether the other team scored on the PP. The NBA didn’t used to have a shot clock. You couldn’t play zone defense (note: I’m not sure if you can now, because I don’t follow the NBA whatsoever) MLB didn’t have a DH, and pitchers pitched complete games, every 4 days. Hitters didn’t wear helmets. Times change. I think this rule is dumb and unnecessary, but we’ll all move on after some pointless bellyaching.
  2. The way the rules are set up, that’ll basically be… (checks notes) never, then, since the Sox can’t draft in the top 10 frequently enough to be able to stack up prospects.
  3. That’s flattering to have that guy called a “hitter,” just like they would on other teams.
  4. $I’m $not $sure, $but $something $tells $me $that $not $all $teams ($especially $the “$cut $the $season $short” $teams) $would $be $on $board.
  5. Do I think it’s stupid? Yes. You can hopefully gather that by looking at my sarcastic offshoot rules in the rest of the thread. Do I think it’ll ruin the game irreversibly? No. The game will adjust. It’s stupid, but we’ll all move on after some bellyaching in the first year. I’d actually be interested to see the number of “early” hooks (fewer than 6IP) that don’t meet one of the three exceptions (injury resulting in IL stint, 4ER, or 100 pitches). I’d guess that it’s not going to be a huge impact, and I would even predict that the player’s union would talk ‘em down to 5 innings as a minimum, rather than 6.
  6. Didn’t they give tickets away for like $1 toward the end of last year?
  7. Maybe this is the start of the standard 6-man rotation.
  8. Yeah, it’s almost like we have a Ricky again, in a good way.
  9. Limit the numer or 100mph pitches, as measured by StatCast, to no more than 6 per game per team. You get an extra one in each extra inning. Additionally, just to f*** with people, for every 5 pitches you get to exactly 99.9 mph, you get an extra 100mph pitch. Because we want to make things more confusing. We'll also make this a reviewable play. Managers will be able to challenge the speed of a pitch, and we'll get a live look-in to some data scientist double checking something on Google Cloud to verify the exact pitch speed. MLB wants to bring data analytics to the forefront, so this is clearly the best way to do so.
  10. For every early pitching change, the opposing team reserves the right to force an "early exit" of a subsequent reliever of their choice. So if some team uses a pitching change in the 3rd inning, the opposing team can force that team to pull their closer in the 9th inning after 1 hitter.
  11. Well, he clearly showed what he is “not gonna take.” so there’s that.
  12. Knowing the Sox, they'd use Windows ME.
  13. For the first 2 batters (or until the inning ends), the "early pitching change" team must play defense with the sprinklers turned on full blast. If in a domed stadium, then the fire suppression sprinkler system will be activated above the playing field.
  14. For each early pitching change, the strike zone shrinks by 1 inch in any dimension of the other team's choice. (Prerequisite: robot umps)
  15. "Early" pitching changes are allowed, but the other team gets to decide who pitches. After your second early change, your first baseman becomes the pitcher, and he must be DHed for.
  16. I think it should be tied to other rules. The first time you put in a reliever before 6IP in a game, you lose your replay vchallenge. The second time you put in a reliever before 6IP in the same game, you lose your DH. (barring injury)
  17. Slide rules only. No more transistor-based devices allowed in front offices. Physical paper spreadsheets only. Want a computer? Fine. Enjoy the fucking vacuum tubes, mechanical relays, and ticker tape, you damn nerds.
  18. I'll make the obligatory first "I forgot he was on the team" post.
  19. Please start a Jake Burger Thread Tracking Thread
  20. Literally the worst in 125 years, going back to 1900
  21. The coaches on the pitching side seem to be competent, by all accounts. Supporting evidence: once Kopech started listening to the coaches (by his own admission), he started pitching better.
  22. Maybe accountability to show that you need to actually try to succeed in order to stay in the lineup?
  23. I think at the time of the trade, many people said the return for him (well, him + Fedde) was underwhelming, especially once you look at what Banks fetched.
  24. The one thing I'm starting to give credit to Getz for is to hire competent people and putting together a competent support staff. It seems like the Bannister hiring is rock solid, and keeping Katz at least seems to be a "not suck" move. I'll be very interested to see a) if he actually has the autonomy to fill out the staff in his own vision; and b) how he does at that. i think his roster management has sucked, his team construction has been atrocious, and his trade record has been a disaster, but I've been happy so far with his staff hirings.
  25. Everyone has always seen the potential, and a lot of people claimed that he'd thrive in the right environment with the right mindset. So I wouldn't say it's 20/20 hindsight.
