You don't need infield defense when you're giving up doubles and homers.

Grade Rick Hahn's Trade Deadline Performance
JoeC replied to South Side Hit Men's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I graded them a B. On a trade-by-trade basis it looks like Hahn was able to get value in return... but if his goal is to compete in 2024, all it did was set the team back in a way that'll force him to try to fill holes in free agency (the prospects are basically at least 1 year away from reaching the majors). ...and, of course, we all know how well he does in free agency. So my conclusion is that he's set up the farm nicely for now, but he's put the team in a position for him to let us down again in 2024. -
(Sorry - didn’t intend to come off as confrontational)

Wasn’t a situational reliever - they chided him for not recognizing the value that they held in Bradford. He was a legitimate reliever, and they chided the Sox for failing to look beyond his unconventional delivery. So they chided the Sox for being stuck in the pre-analytical mindset and being behind the times. Chad Bradford was the example.

I thought Moneyball dinged him for undervaluing Chad Bradford.

True, but you would think at SOME point in history as a charter member of the AL....

Giolito & Reynaldo to LAA. Update: Angels put on waivers

Also... what's confusing to me is that, based on the assets we gave up (Gio + ReyLo), this is a "retool" trade. Trade away the rental players while presumably holding onto players under contract for next year. The return indicates that this is a "rebuild" trade. Retooling trades should help you within the next 12 months. The returns here, at best, give you an obligatory big-league-bench-sitting or mop-up innings / spot starts late next year. So the returns, while on the surface they seem nice, just don't make sense. -

I like the return, on the surface. It's nice getting a top-100 prospect with upside. However, this just adds to the glut of 1B / DH players in our system. If he pans out with his bat, we've just traded for the privilege of seeing the next out-of-position-RFer in 4 years (after 2 years of trying to make his defense "work" at the big league level). Depth is nice, but it's useless when it's as one-dimensional as our "depth" is. You have to be able to have capable players at every position. -

Plus I get the impression that playing Remillard would help set a culture of accountability and meritocracy. He seems to have done everything right, including inexcusibly playing RF. -

Kopech showing he wants to stay on the south side. -
Giving credit for a shitty job done = holding them accountable and making sure they know they failed. 70% done is an F in the baseball industry. “Credit” can be good or bad. In this case, it is bad, because the result was only 70% successful.
-
So who gets credit for getting the team close? Also, please note that he got the team 70% there. That's not good enough and is a failure, so I don't want you to get the idea that I'm giving him a pass. My point is that he took a shitty system, tore it down to the studs, and got the team temporarily into respectability. If he doesn't get credit for that, who does?

Kenny inherited a core of valuable assets and a decent farm, and he did a remarkable job of stretching that window of contention. Hahn inherited a disaster of a core and a barren farm, and I will at least give him a credit for getting us to the table (2020 / 1st half of 2021). He's since turned it into a bigger disaster than he started with, but IMO he did get us about 70% of the way to legitimate contention.
