  1. Especially curious to get a look at Pierce George after reading this from a scout:

    Quote

His praise went even further for George. The towering 6-foot-6, 240-pound righty out of Alabama elicited a Mason Miller comparison from Cummings. Miller, an American League All-Star reliever for the Oakland Athletics, throws his fastball in the 102 to 103 mile-per-hour range. Cummings said George can do the same, topping out at 102 MPH. “If we get this guy in the zone more consistently, he might have the best stuff in the draft,” Cummings said about George.

  2. Robots might be calling balls and strikes, but the umps don't want you to forget them.

    First this:

Which was relatively minor...but then in the next inning, Nastrini gets quickly ejected from the game for arguing a safe call on a SB.

I personally thought the runner was out, but also Nastrini didn't do anything especially demonstrative that made it obvious why he'd get kicked so quickly?

  3. Sounds like Hagen Smith's next outing will be for Winston-Salem.

Wonder if he joins the Barons playoff run at the end of the season and we get a sneak preview of him and Schultz on the same staff.

How did Vail get the loss?

Allowed a hit to his second batter, and that runner scored on a play at home after he left the game. Dash never retook the lead, so he gets a rare 0.1IP L.

  5. Some notes from today's slate:

Tommy Vail had been great (0.65ERA in 18IP entering today) after a promotion to WS, but he left today's start in the first with an injury. Nothing that looked visually obvious.

Jeral Perez looks like a good get. Solid at SS, went 2-3 with a 2B, 3B, and BB today.

Wilfred Veras is locked in. A HR today for his second in 3 games. Slashing .328/.409/.534 through 58 August ABs.

Sean Burke should taste the majors soon.

    Adisyn Coffey in 6IP this month: 1ER, 10K, 2BB, 2/2 saves.

Finally, don't let Smith being nasty distract you from the fact that he's not even our top LHP prospect.

Schultz finished 3.2IP/0ER without his best stuff today. He had to (and did) pitch out of second and third no outs in the first after a HBP and BB, which cost him some precious pitch count.

  6. If Bastita has competition for being the most underrated acquisition, it's maybe Juan Carela.

He breezed through 6IP/0ER tonight on a bunch of weak contact early in counts.

The Barons also threw a shutout, with the Smith-Njigba's first inning HR enough to secure the 1-0 win.

Neither team did much offensively otherwise, the game was a quick one.

  7. Aldrin Batista is maybe the most underrated acquisition of the past two years?

He's been ridiculous since his well deserved promotion to WS, with 15K in 9IP across his first two starts at the level.

Rosado (DeJong return) followed him up with two scoreless, and Pallette finished the last 2IP of the shutout for his second save. 12K to just 1BB for the staff.

WS won 2-0. It was a little revenge for Bergolla (Banks trade) vs. the Philly A+ club, since he scored one of the runs and knocked in the other.

There was a scary moment when he got accidentally drilled in the helmet by the catcher trying to throw to 1st while he was at the plate, but he stayed in the game.

Nishida was 2-4 with a BB.

  8. Kanny had the tying run at the plate in the 9th, but ultimately dropped their game 5-2.

Perkins has pretty nasty stuff. IF defense was a little lackluster, there were a couple "hits" that felt playable.

Wolkow was 2-3 with a BB and no (!!) strikeouts. 8 hits for the team, only 1 for extra bases (a Jeral Perez double).

  9. I thought Eder could have gone another inning, but he's done after 81 pitches: 5IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 5K. 16 whiffs.

Could maybe have saved a run or two if not for getting burned by steals early (6SB in the first 2 innings). Perez is catching.

Only two baserunners over his final 3 innings, both walks, one picked off and one caught by a GIDP.

Peralta threw 2 perfect innings in relief. Gus Varlard (LAD waiver claim) also threw a perfect inning.

Coffey threw a not perfect inning, loading the bases in the 9th...but he danced out of it without allowing a run.

    As for the position players:

    • Colas 1-4 with a 2B and RBI but 3K. He also made a poorly advised throw from RF that nearly allowed the go ahead run to score in the 9th.
    • Elko also 1-4 with a 2B and 3K.
    • Montgomery, believe it or not, also 1-4 with a 2B (but only 1K for him).
    • Ramos 0-3 with a BB.

Game is headed to extras tied at 3.

  10. Nastrini retired his first 10 in order before Torkelson ambushed a first pitch FB for a solo shot.

He's looked good otherwise through 4IP, mixing pitches well and velo maybe up a tick from his last few outings.

  11. Excellent thread on Quero below. I recommend reading it in full, but the main takeaways:

    • He's made a swing adjustment to lift and pull more, leading to both better results (HR, SLG) and also underlying metrics (EV, HH%, HR/FB%)
    • He's producing as well as he has despite being younger than the opposing pitcher for a ridiculous 98.5% of his pro ABs

As if u ever wait to declare early defeat.

I remember the trade being declared a loss a few days in because Mena hit 95 on a ST gun for Arizona.
