This is true and that’s why Belle was signed to that contract but his second season with the Sox was up there with Frank in his prime. That corked bag of Joey’s was hitting dongs. -

Not a surprise. They likely don’t want to go into ST with Crochet like they did with Cease and risk injury to their last remaining really good trade bait. Getz is probably hoping Crochet can net him an entirely new starting lineup. 🤣 -

All so they could save face with angry Sox fans for each and every big free agent failure (Machado, Harper, Wheeler).. “Our offer to Manny was better…” ”Our offer to Wheeler was higher…” Did you end up signing any of them? ”Nope.” -

Exactly. But you can 100% believe our former dynamic front office clown duo. A couple guys that couldn’t even hire their own manager in their supposed competitive window. Continually neutered by their risk-averse boss, while constantly fluffing up how great of an owner he was. -

Because the Sox former Executive Vice President was a goofball, and you would be foolish to believe anything he or Hahn said. Kenny literally tried to say that an 8-year contract worth $250 million guaranteed, with non-guaranteed Incentives and option years that could push the total value to $350 million was a better offer than 10-years, $300 million guaranteed with an opt-out after the 5th year. Kenny and Hahn were lying fools. Oh yes, “the money will be spent”… until it wasn’t. -

From the same team (Kenny, I believe) that said he believed the Sox offer to Machado was actually better than the deal he signed? https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/02/19/manny-machado-padres-contract-kenny-williams-white-sox-shocked-free-agency C’mon… -

I think this is the article but maybe @southsider2k5 can correct me if I’m wrong… “Red Sox ‘right in the thick’ of Garrett Crochet trade talks (MLB Notebook)” Some notable excerpts… -

Get back to us when one of those high priced free agents actually signs with the Sox. The highest Sox contract ever is still 5/$75. -
Why does that matter?

If those were the first two, I doubt Getz would have quibbled over the third prospect. I doubt the offer was that good (Painter and Crawford). -
He’s getting credit for his organizational hires even though his roster moves have been terrible from the start. God forbid we have a GM that can do both well, but we don’t. Sox fans have been beaten down by a terrible owner to have low expectations.
-
No, my point was that you wouldn’t even want these guys if they were still under team control. They suck. Getz’s roster moves have been absolutely terrible on the whole.
-
Bummer had one bad season out of 8 years in the majors. Yes, I do know. Soroka is a free agent. Lopez wasn’t worth the $4.3 million he was paid last year. Shuster and Shewmake both blow. You think Shuster had a good year. Look at his stats (hits, walks, and strikeouts). Dude isn’t good, he’s lucky. Hopefully Gowens turns into something but he’s a 25 year old reliever in AA.
-
They were better after they left the Sox. What a surprise. Your last comment is ridiculous. The Braves were going to non-tender some of those scrubs but Getz did them a favor and took them back in the Bummer trade. Now, Getz is in the same position as the Braves last offseason, with a bunch of players no one wants.
-
Because Bummer was and still is a better reliever than the majority of the Sox 2024 opening day bullpen. Opening Day Relief Pitchers (9): Michael Kopech, John Brebbia, Tim Hill, Deivi García, Dominic Leone, Jordan Leasure, Steven Wilson, Tanner Banks, Bryan Shaw
-
Perhaps he should acquire more talent evaluators since he can’t do it worth a damn judging by his acquisitions thus far.
-
If it was truly the right call, we would have gotten back a halfway decent player. Not what is currently a 26 year old pitching “prospect” with a 5+ minor league career ERA.
-
95% of the roster performed poorly because they sucked, including the majority of our wizard GM’s putrid acquisitions.
-
JR not wanting to spend any money this offseason will be the reason.
-
Not when this lineup will struggle to score 3 runs of it’s own. 🤣
-
Schumaker ain’t no dummy. He probably never even considered this career killer gig.
-
Comparing a crappy acquisition (Lopez) to a slightly crappier acquisition (Frazier) doesn’t make Lopez look any better. Regarding Soroka, considering he was a guy with a history of injuries, it should be no surprise that he… got injured.
-
I was just pointing out that your “odds” statement was, well, odd. I never said Bummer’s high likelihood of rebounding based on the rest of his career dictated his entire trade value. But the “odds” were more likely that Bummer would perform better than a 6.79 ERA, as that was the obvious outlier in his career. He isn’t a 6 ERA guy. He’s a 3.5 to 3.75 ERA guy.
-
Based on his career, the odds are that Bummer would have had a better ERA than 6 with the Sox last season. His ERA in 2023 was the worst in his career. Prior to 2023, Bummer never finished a season with worse than a 4.50 ERA and that was his rookie season.
