  1. Schriffen wouldn’t dare eat one of those on air.
  2. Oooh, he’s so new age! So cutting edge! Grifol thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room as he tries to spit this “new” strategy. The more he opens his mouth, the dumber he sounds.
  3. Competitive advantage. Grifol will let you and opposing teams know who the closer is when you need to know.
  4. Just need a VPN app for those in Chicago.
  5. Surprised Pham isn’t signed by now. Greinke, Hill, and Cueto will probably sign once some injuries hit a rotation a month or two into the season. I think Syndergaard is cooked.
  6. I didn’t really think about it this way, and I’m not surprised Getz would try to save $2 million where he could (if not breaking any MLB rules), but Pillar’s comments are pretty telling. He’s definitely upset by the last minute bait and switch.
  7. It wouldn’t be so bad if Getz planned on spending that $2 million elsewhere, but it is likely just going back in Jerry’s pocket like Cease’s $8 million.
  8. These are good points, but obviously Montgomery isn’t getting what he wants in free agency and he is still sitting out there unsigned. At some point, you don’t always get to go to the contending team you want to and money talks.
  9. Seems like a leap to make the assumption that they were trying to acquire another free agent or trade target. They just signed Grossman (yes, opposite side of hitting platoon) but likely just didn’t want to pay Pillar $3 million and saw an opportunity to save $2 million. Look at the rest of the Sox bench. No one else is making anywhere near that kind of money. I realize Stassi is no longer making the opening day roster due to injury, but the Braves are paying the majority of our originally planned backup catcher’s salary. Their starting SS DeJong is making a paltry $1.75 million. Remember the talk about the Sox being interested in Lorenzen or Clevinger due to trading away Cease’s $8 million salary? Where did those talks go? Once one of those options signs elsewhere, you just pocket the payroll? What kind of one year deal would Montgomery be willing to sign for at this point? He would be a great flip candidate. But it sure seems like the Sox never planned on spending Cease’s freed up $8 million to begin with. This offseason was about cutting payroll, so $2 million more for a bench player was deemed no small amount and Getz took the opportunity to cut the payroll even more.
  10. Of course not. I never said Pillar had any better options, just like most of the mediocre to bad vets Getz acquired this offseason.
  11. Pretty simple. If Getz was given some truth serum, he would say, “We want you on the team but my boss doesn’t want to pay you the $3 million we had agreed to.” Pillar sure sounds pissed off that he is going into this level of detail, saying things like he has never dealt with a situation with a team like this, etc.
  12. Great question.
  13. It’s pretty shocking to me that they keep running their mouths about how great their offseason was. I don’t see the benefit in doing this when the team is most likely going to crash hard and fast in the standings. They are going to look like even bigger clowns once it happens. Do they think fans with a clue are also going to be “surprised” like them when the bottom half of the order that was acquired this offseason doesn’t hit a lick? Oh geez, I just don’t know why our offense is struggling with DeJong, Lopez, Maldonado, and Pillar at the bottom of our lineup? Aw shucks, it’s just not our year!
  14. Braves signed RHP Jesse Chavez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
  15. What a leader. Sign him up. He can give the rest of the team the tough love that they need that Grifol is too cowardly to do himself.
  16. No conflict of interest there. Perhaps the Dodgers could have hired a second translator?
  17. I was going to say this earlier that I still expected Shaw to make the roster despite his poor spring because his rubber arm makes up for Grifol’s poor bullpen management. Grifol loves Shaw because he can pitch so many consecutive days.
  18. Sign him to a minor league deal. He’d easily be our best starter. This team really can’t get any more embarrassing than it already is.
  19. Oh, I thought you meant signing someone that actually cost money, not more cheap detritus.
  20. Are you sure? It sure seems like Jerry wanted to cut the payroll even more after trading Cease’s $8 million, cutting Moustakas, and cutting and then resigning Pillar for less money.
  21. 9-20. A team almost has to try to be that bad, even in ST.
  22. I might be reading your post wrong but Pillar was only guaranteed $3 million if he made the opening day roster. So the Sox just cut him and signed him back for less. He never received any of the $3 million. Now why the Sox thought Pillar could be worth $3 million dollars just less than two months ago if he made the opening day is another question.
