If Reinsdorf wants to improve this team, he would hand Orioles GM Mike Elias a blank check to fill out for his salary/contract. The guy is a wizard GM and puts Getz to shame. Remember how he passed on Crochet and Fedde? Elfin is now 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA in an Orioles uniform. Trevor Rogers, not so good, but I assume he was just insurance. “Zach Eflin recorded a season-high eight strikeouts and yielded one run over six innings on Thursday in a win over the Red Sox. Eflin has notched at least seven strikeouts in three of his four starts since coming over from the Rays at last month’s trade deadline. The 30-year-old right-hander, who generated 12 swinging strikes and finished with a 31 percent CSW in this one, limited Boston’s red-hot lineup to just five hits with a fourth-inning homer by rookie Wilyer Abreu representing the lone tally against him over six frames. He holds a sublime 2.13 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 25/2 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (four starts) for the Orioles since July 29. He’ll aim to keep the momentum going on Tuesday when he faces the Mets at Citi Field.

Sox planning more playing time for Vargas/Fletcher

I was actually referring to the poster Harold based on his earlier post in this thread. But your point remains… -
Latest rebuild fixes won't come quick...

Well, based on Jerry’s opinion on the best lineup, a rebuild shouldn’t be required. Find nine players that have a ceiling of David Eckstein. Done. -

How many other bums will he blame before he finally has to admit that Getz was the problem all along? -

Yep, hitters are putting up too many “sword” stats. Ban fastballs above 99 mph! -

I disagree. Analytics can provide a team and it’s players with the statistics, best probability, etc., but players still have to successfully employ the strategy that the analytics are telling them and the opposition of course has the ability to counter. Humans are not robots. If the analytics say to pound a guy low and inside with sliders, the pitcher still has to hit his spots and the batter can lay off of those pitches and draw a walk, or the batter can hit a mistake pitch out of the park. -

No more tablets. No more starting pitchers and catchers researching the lineup they are facing. No more hitters researching the pitchers they are facing. aNaLyTiCs BaD. mE aNgRy!!! -

Sox planning more playing time for Vargas/Fletcher

What about the GM who traded Mena for Dominic Fletcher instead of the better outfielder offered by the Dbacks in Jake McCarthy, and who could only get back Vargas as a headliner in return for Fedde and Kopech? -

Rockies place Elias Díaz on waivers
WhiteSox2023 replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Trade Winds 2024
Elias Díaz is turning 34 in November, is owed the remainder of his $6 million dollar salary for this year, and he’s a free agent after this season. He makes zero sense for the Sox to claim, although the Rockies would surely appreciate it. Some contender will grab him. Joey Bart was the 27 year old catcher the Sox should have acquired when the Giants DFA him back on March 31st. He is now at an .858 OPS. -
Yep. The Mariners have already signed Robles to an extension, and it looks like a nice frugal contract. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/08/mariners-victor-robles-agree-to-extension.html

My guess is based on Barfield’s advice, due to him being the director of player development for the Diamondbacks for the past four years, and an extra year of player control. McCarthy and Fletcher are only a month apart in age but McCarthy will be a free agent in 2029 and Fletcher will be a free agent in 2030. Because you are correct, McCarthy had the better track record. He was a better hitter in the minors than Fletcher and had already put up a good two-thirds of a season in 2022 (.769 OPS in 354 PA). Meanwhile, Fletcher had a good year last season, but only in a small sample size (.791 OPS in 102 PA). Thus far, it looks like a poor recommendation by Barfield and a bad final decision by Getz. It seems like Getz chose the bigger question mark based on Barfield’s advice, and to also gain an extra year of control on the outfielder they were receiving. As of tonight, McCarthy is hitting .311 / .383 / .457 / .840 with 17 stolen bases. He’s currently worth 2.7 fWAR. Yikes…

Illinois High School Football Thread
WhiteSox2023 replied to Y2Jimmy0's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Sure, I’ll probably be at almost every game. Funny you mentioned the baseball field. It is under renovation right now. Here’s what it is going to look like when it is finished. They changed the direction of the diamond. As you remember, home plate used to be in the left corner, near the side street and entrance to the parking lot. They had to shrink down the main parking lot a bit but there is always still a lot of parking at Mother McAuley, as you can see beyond what is now right field. I think the football team is going to be really good and better than the Varsity teams of the last two years. This will be the first Varsity team that Coach Q recruited as incoming Freshmen from when he was first hired. They are young (many Junior starters on Varsity) but I think the players are more talented than last year’s team. CJ Gray was a run-first QB but has worked hard on developing his passing game the last couple years. They have some really good offensive players in WR Darrion Clinton, along with the Green brothers, RB Jaylin and WR Jovan Green. They added a big WR in 6’4” Jimmie Maxson. Also, some beasts in King Liggins and Christian Pierce on defense, and added a Sophomore in big boy DT Brayden Parks to Varsity. Coach Q went to Temple and coached at a couple high schools in Texas and California. He is a tough coach and busts all of their asses but the players like and respect him. -
