2016-2017 Off-season Plans (extensive)

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 09:14 AM) I have no issue with signing FAs like Melancon, Weiters (assuming he's not a QO FA), Reddick, and a fifth starter. You just added $50 million to next year's payroll! -
QUOTE (The Grinder @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 12:07 PM) OK my first post on this fine site, I migrated over from WSI after some BS, LOL. Slow learner, huh?

QUOTE (jamesdiego @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 10:10 PM) The only hot seat Kenny will be on is when he's bouncing on Jerry's warm lap.

Great ball game, sure. But I love the guys who live out of state and don't have to deal with these asshats telling us how we should feel.

Potential + Effects of the World Series?
Hatchetman replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Cubs have big name financial institutions behind them. Do you think they assumed the Cubs would win the World Series when they lent them the dough? No. They would have assumed a historic level of cash flow. Lenders don't assume a "best case" scenario. The Cubs are making way more money than they need to meet debt obligations. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) The post season teams don't keep the lions share of that money. MLB does. LOL. JR must have been the mastermind of that. Some quick research shows the teams would split roughly 30% of the gate. Of course cubs would get 100% of concessions. My ticket prices of $150 I think were way low, so the Cubs must have made out quite nicely. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 03:20 PM) JB Shuck sucks, but it never hurts to have guys with MLB experience in the minors. That is the key: IN THE MINORS.

Potential + Effects of the World Series?
Hatchetman replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Cubs just drew 340,000 in 8 postseason games. At $150/head (I have no idea) that would be $50 million bucks right there. -
You guys see the Budweiser Harry Caray commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nApTGkLd2hs Still making money for the Cubs 35 years after JR fired him.

QUOTE (captain54 @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 12:06 PM) If JR's heirs hold on to the estate, now you got me in tears. I could handle the Cubs winning the WS but not this. -

QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 09:17 AM) Sox have no one to blame but themselves for their position. We have an awful owner and an awful front office. Cubs winning or not, this franchise is a f***ing trainwreck. Nice summation in less than 50 words. -
Sure is a fabulous game isn't it? I've forgotten what a meaningful game feels like. Sort of like the face of an old high school friend....you sort of remember it, but not the details exactly.

Guaranteed Rate Field official at Midnight

It should be called Not-Comiskey Park. Let's go down to Not-Comiskey. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 02:55 AM) If the White Sox didn't have the necessary budget leeway to add another $5-10 million (the cost of finishing with either Fowler or Desmond), then they shouldn't have bothered to sign Robertson, Cabrera, LaRoche, trade for Frazier, etc. The margin of error was just way too thin, and it proved itself to be prophetic when Rollins and Latos struggled, Avila/Navarro struggled/got hurt and finally the Austin Jackson injury. Of course, the most mystifying part of last season was adding a lot more money onto the payroll for James Shields (when they were still in contention), money that they apparently didn't feel justified spending before the season began, even though it amount to much less than they eventually allocated to Shields. You can't defend the White Sox front office for falling short on adding an impact bat because they "ran out of money/budget/resources," because EVERYONE AT SOXTALK saw that situation coming from a MILE away. In fact, while many were not confident about a Cespedes deal, Gordon was a very real possibility, along with Desmond and possibly Fowler. Obviously, Gordon got hurt, but his asking price came down $18-28 million from the original expected/asking price at the beginning of the off-season. Looking at Jackson's last 2-3 seasons and his enigmatic performance, it was about as realistic for him to return to a 3 WAR player as it was for Lawrie. Of course, they could have traded for Jean Segura, for example, but 28 other teams missed out on that lower-hanging fruit (Trumbo as well). This is exactly right. They started the job but didn't finish. You don't start renovating your kitchen and then stop halfway when it costs more than you thought it would.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 1, 2016 -> 03:04 AM) https://southsideshowdown.com/2016/10/31/wh...roldis-chapman/ I can easily say that if the Sox did this, I would cease being a Sox fan. We've had plenty of domestic abusers in the past....at least this one is good at baseball.

The Frazier deal was fine in isolation but it made no sense in the bigger picture.

QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Oct 29, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) I started following the Sox way back in 1952, I grew up in probably the best era to be a Sox fan. 17 straight winning seasons and won over 90 games 7 times. We had the misfortune of no wild cards and in the same league as the Yankees. And yes it was a Sox town in those days, back then 1,000,000 in home attendance was the holy grail, we drew over a million 15 of those years while the Cubs were drawing 600,000 to 800,000. I was a vendor in 1962 at both parks, I was lucky if I made 5 bucks a game at Wrigley while at Comiskey I would make between 15 and 20 bucks a game, not bad for a 16 year old I went away to the Air Force in 1965 and when I was discharged in 1969, things had changed like over night, the Cubs were the darlings and we were forgotten and only drew 495,000 in 1970. They brought in Hemond and Tanner and by 1972 we were contenders again, in 1973 the Sox drew their largest crowd ever when 55,555 showed up for a DH against the Twins. The attendance battle was about even and after we won the division in 83 the Sox were talk of the town while Lee Elia threw a tantrum against Cub fans. We lost Harry Caray in 82 and the Tribune bought the Cubs, when they won the division in 84, again things changed and this time for good. Except for the new park opening in 91 and the 2005 Championship season the Sox have been an afterthought in the Metro area , this is now 3 decades and I don't see it ever changing. Drastic changes are needed, a new park in a more desirable area, new ownership with deep pockets to invest in a minor league system that produces players who have the potential to become stars and signing premier free agents. Whoever owns the Sox needs to build a team that makes it to the postseason more than once every 10 years, 3 or 4 postseason appearances in a row will hopefully get people talking about the Sox again. If these things don't happen, I hate to say it but when the lease is up, the White Sox will probably move to another city. Thanks for sharing!

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 12:20 PM) Whats your point though? That hey maybe 30 years ago it was "close" to even? As of the last couple decades and for pretty much as long as baseball exists Chicago will be a Cubs town. The sox are never going to even it up. The point is the truth. Why would someone be intentionally misrepresenting the facts? 100% of the Sox fans who were alive at the time will tell you the truth. It doesn't matter to the current situation, you are correct. This is a Cubs town now and will likely be forever more.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 01:35 PM) Chicago is a Cubs town, and pretty solidly has been since the 1950's and early 1960's. This is false. Wallow in your own ignorance if you enjoy it.
-
It has been a Cubs town since 1984. 32 years which is hard to believe how fast time goes by. 32 years is a long long time. However, this was not a Cubs town in the 1970s. no way. You don't need to embellish the truth to make your broader point.
-
That's the first "plan" that I have seen that actually looks like a 90+ win team.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 05:31 PM) I would go with the 16 out of 20 years personally as a clearer trend. LOL. Whatever you say.
