I did not know the rule 5 draft existed prior to the amatuer draft system being set up in the 60s. some quick research reveals some other near HOF'ers: urban shocker red faber hal chase hack wilson willy taveras

Forgot about Santana, but it shows you what you can get for $50,000.
-
Of course the Sox made probably the greatest Rule 5 pick in history in 1985 with Bobby Bonilla.
-
One of the more interesting Sox picks was in 1987. They picked a Toronto 2B prospect Santiago Garcia, who had all the tools, but was a total nutcase. He didn't make the opening day roster, but the Blue Jays didn't want him back. After about half a year in AAA for the sox, he was released. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/S...go-Garcia.shtml

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) So when was the last time the Sox picked someone in the major league portion of the draft? Jason Grilli, 2003

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) I'd much rather have him than the earlier mentioned 1B. I remember seeing him play against the Sox late in the season, and I was impressed. For him, if available, I'd almost be willing to take a shot and give him a bench spot. I'm kind of shocked he is unprotected. AHH, NEVERMIND. He must have been added to the 40-man in the last few weeks. The website I was using was out of date.

I think Kila Kaaihue, a big slow Hawaiian is available. Pretty good hitter. Brother is a braves prospect. 1B/DH type: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/K/kila-kaaihue.shtml NEVERMIND: HE WAS ADDED TO THE 40-MAN.

former top cubs prospect donald veal, who could be an interesting loogy: http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=29572

James Skelton, a pretty good catching prospect from the Tigers, but he's hardly out of A-ball and hits left-handed: http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=13587
-
Royals right-hander Chris Nicolls, a control-type reliever: http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=25389

Former Twins prospect Eduardo Morlan http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=25053

This probably belongs under the crazy move heading, because the sox never take somebody in the major league phase. Anyway, here's a guy who was the Indians #7 prospect last year. He looks like a Ross Gload type: Jordan Brown Stats: http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=1818

furcal would be SS and leadoff, alexei stays at 2b. somebody keeps 3B warm until beckham comes up. sounds pretty easy to me.
-
rosenthal sez yanks could go 5 years $100 mil for Burnett if they miss out on Sabathia. IF SO, this vazquez deal doesn't look quite as good.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 03:11 PM) I hear that Kenny hasnt even been discussing trades with other GM's and has spent most of his time on the phone with a small number of agents for FA's. Well that is a good sign. I hope one of them is Furcal's.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 02:37 PM) Which is why you never see KW do a "rebuilding" year, and you won't this year either. I just hope you're right. But if the Sox were serious about signing any free agents, I think we would have heard something. These things leak out.
-
The sox need to compete every year for the division. Sox fans aren't going to wait for a 3 year building project. If they go that route, the death-spiral will begin.....lower attendance leads to lower salary leads to lower attendance ..on and on until we're a "small market" team again.
-
JR must be anticipating a hell of an attendance drop to account for $45 mil.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) Yeah, I'd certainly rather have Bailey instead of Jackson. And I know some people may think I'm crazy for that, but Jackon's numbers scare me, I think his ERA would rise at the Cell, and Bailey is younger, cheaper and I think has far more potential. I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with you. Bailey was on of the top prospects in baseball just a year ago.

jesus f***ing christ, how many prospects do the braves have? their disposables are better than anything we have.
-
this apparently was just now: http://www.metsblog.com/2008/12/09/outfiel...th-sox-for-dye/
-
WFAN apparently said the braves were in serious talks over dye.
-
QUOTE (G&T @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) Doesn't look like an FA's will be signed, even if Dye is traded. if that's the case, I'm giving up my imaginary season tickets.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) Losing $48 million in salaries and raising ticket prices isn't going to happen. I hope you knocked on wood when you said that.
