  1. he's similar to jimmy key.
  2. uribe is what he is. it's not easy to find a good hitting SS. what about CF, RF, DH, 3B, 1B? that's what is killing the offense.
  3. not too well, looking at the stats. .230ish with a lot of Ks.
  4. i see him as sort of a nick johnson type.
  5. if that's the case, then I guess no rush...
  6. if we want to keep him beyond 2006, he'd have to be on the major league roster..is that right?
  7. IF gload comes back and hits .300 again this year, i'd go with him. i'd cream my shorts to see a slick fielding left handed firstbaseman on the sox. generations of sox fans don't even know what a good defensive firstbaseman looks like.
  8. he seems to be having no problem in AA, and he's already old, this being his 5th year in the minors.
  9. random idea is that some team wants to see him face big league hitters. i dunno. this is kind of strange.
  10. wasn't MB the guy who told the st.louis GM he'd like to play there?
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2005 -> 06:52 AM) I'd love to see Timo gone, but I am not holding my breath. ditto.
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2005 -> 01:07 PM) The problem is that we have no first basemen on this roster. Pauly is our 1B until Gload gets back. which sort of seems like it could be never.
  13. last time konerko went into a slump like this it lasted a year and a half.
  14. what would his contract status be? can we keep him in the minors another year?
  15. the only reason this guy ever got a job was he worked with bill james. for the life of me i cannot figure out why james let him hang around. the man is an idiot which was apparent from the start of his tenure at espn.com.
  16. frank thomas is a fascinating study. a huge man, yet shy and extremely sensitive. he's honest and he's not a bs artist which has gotten him into trouble with the media and has really tarnished his national reputation. he's got a lot of pride and is very concerned about his own performance, which rubs team mates the wrong way. from what i can gather, he is at heart a kind man. as far as i know, no one really seems to know what makes him tick. he went through a nasty divorce and a music production company he started turned into a financial disaster. performance wise, he was the greatest non-steroid assisted hitter in the last 30 years. he's been injured off and on for the past 8 years or so, with pretty serious injuries. also during that time, he became obsessed with hitting home runs, to the detriment of his overall performance. he was trying to keep up with the drug laden bonds, mcgwire, sosa, etc. when he came up to the majors (he spent about a year in the minors after being drafted in the first round out of Auburn University), he was a below average but passable defensive first baseman. i believe he had and probably still has some mental-block about throwing the baseball. he looked like a girl when he threw and had about the same success. of course, being intensely sensitive to criticism, it only made matters worse. after about 5 years he was moved to "designated hitter" which the american league has in place of letting the pitcher make an automatic out. it would have been interesting to see what would have happened to his career had there been no "dh." not playing a defensive position definitely hurts his reputation as it relates to baseball's all-time greatest players. all in all he's a fascinating character and i've been lucky to follow his career since the day he was drafted.
  17. i don't think i'd ever draft a closer in the first round. the only two closers that were drafted as closers (i think) and amounted to anything were gregg olson and randy myers.
  18. no, no. power is useless if you can't make contact. guys who strike out a lot in college worry me considerably. i didn't mind the borchard pick b/c he had like once in a lifetime power. how about dellaero for a guy with the inability to make contact? fields worried me b/c he struck out quite a bit, but he seems to have made the adjustment. anderson still worries me. seems like you can always draft an all-american hitter who is percieved as unathletic or something..."as good as he's going to be." i think the sox got ventura and thomas in the low teens.
  19. QUOTE(Randar68 @ May 13, 2005 -> 09:23 AM) Everyone struggles with taking pitchers, especially outside of the top 10 or so. which is precisely why i don't want them to take a pitcher. i'm biased toward big sluggers, who may not have many tools, but do have the two most important ones.
  20. we haven't exactly been good at selecting pitchers over the past decade....i like guys who can flat out hit...maybe stephen head, 1B, ole miss.
  21. good. wscr is my only chicago sports radio option (can't get mvp). nothing worse than working in my shop on a saturday morning and then the illini football network comes on the air.
  22. yeah, i agree. he sucks. how long until he's canned? wonder what'll be next? the show is slightly better with mulligan instead of j hood.
