  1. i thought we jointly concluded that the only FA of note signed in the past 8 years was navarro. that's a rigid steadfast refusal to sign free agents in my book. but i'm not going to argue about semantics. possibilities: polanco morris clement dye
  2. my beef isn't about money. it's about a rigid philosophy. i am opposed to a steadfast refusal to sign free agents.
  3. well, i live out of state, so the question is moot. but if i lived in town and thought the team was of championship caliber, i don't think price would make that much difference to me. if i lived in town now i wouldn't go at all.
  4. how else can you defend not EVER signing a free agent?
  5. i only pointed out schmidt to refute the claim that signing a free agent is always a bad idea. clearly it is not.
  6. personally i'd rather have 1 championship and 49 years in the cellar than 50 years in second place. but that's just a personal preference. i never said they should spend MORE money (though i do believe they should spend $80-$90 million.) at the very least they should quit the charade that they are actually pursuing those guys.
  7. are you a lawyer by any chance? i guess i should have explicitly stated ADDING a free agent, not just re-signing a guy you already have. as an aside, navarro was signed b/c they lost fernandez.
  8. they seem to be serious about Kent too.
  9. how about someone you would consider an above average starter (position or pitcher)?
  10. according to your logic every free agent signing is a bad one. what if we signed jason schmidt a few years ago instead of dicking around with the wells, ritchie, colon, and garcia experiments? it's been 8 years since we signed anyone of significance.
  11. So is ignoring it completely. There's no reason why we can't afford to sign a decent FA now and again...
  12. As you outlined, there are three tools to improve a team. Completely refusing to use one of them pisses off a lot of fans. Not sure how you can blame them. It's not even like we're excellent at the other two.
  13. the only thing he said is that they wanted to get a starter and a late inning reliever.
  14. regarding randy johnson, JR said they never agreed on a deal with arizona so they don't know if johnson would come here. so it seems like KW at least attempted. with regard to general moves, he said that things were being held up as teams deal with the free agents first. he said opening day isn't until April and things will likely be slow to develop. sounds like a repeat of last offseason.
  15. North said something to the effect of "signing Polanco is NOT going to get the fanbase excited." JR said somebody just made up the polanco thing, no truth to it.
  16. oh yeah. he said they didn't sign guzman b/c of his s***ty road stats. you think JR isn't intimately involved with every decision KW makes?
  17. he said something along the lines of "if money equated to winning, we'd have won the AL central all these years." weeee.
  18. This AM with Mike North. I can't say as I recall anything of interest from the conversation. Just the usual platitudes. He thought we'd have won the division the past three years with a #5 starter who could go 10-10. Said their top priorities are a starter and reliever. Had very good things to say about Uribe, so it looks like he may be our SS. Intimated there was no interest in Polanco.
  19. he'd be a perfect #2 behind a basestealing leadoff man...taking pitches, hitting the other way, etc. unfortunately we don't have that.
  20. dye was terrific the first half of last year. supposedly he had a bad thumb which hurt him in the second half. i dunno. at least he can play the field. better than burnitz.
  21. last year i predicted marvin benard and we signed him. so this year i'm thinking renteria and beltran.
  22. from gleeman: Vizquel is a guy I've talked about as a good one-year filler, but it sounds as if at least one team has bigger plans for the 38-year-old. I've heard that the White Sox are talking about a two-year deal worth $8 million for Vizquel, which is not only extremely overpaying him, but also extremely strange when you consider they'd be setting the shortstop market by signing a 38-year-old in an offseason where teams have their pick at the position. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/...ket-shortstops/
  23. washington is going to increase payroll, i heard by about $15 mil. they need starting pitching in a bad way. armas has a lot of potential. i see no reason they would trade him, especially if it were only for prospects.
