The season is official over....
Ozzietheairedale replied to AngelasDaddy0427's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Olivo's stats: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG 2004 46 141 21 38 7 2 7 26 70 10 29 5 4 .316 .496 .270 Career 166 477 60 117 27 3 14 58 192 31 114 11 8 .295 .403 .245 This is the guy you think the Sox are going to miss so much that they'll come in behind the Tigers? There is nothing in these numbers that suggest a future HOFer. This team has won nothing in 90 years. I don't want to hear anything more about next year - ever! If Garcia gets the Sox a pennant, it's a great move. If the Sox don't win the pennant, it sucks. -
ESPN 1000: Freddy Garcia traded to the White Sox
Ozzietheairedale replied to Flash Tizzle's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It doesn't make me feel any better about losing Olivo and Reed just because we might sign him in the off season. We might have signed him in the off season without giving up Olivo and Reed. The only way to look at this is to compare Garcia now for Olivo and Reed in the future. IMO the ONLY way this trade works in our favor is if we win the pennant - not just the division. If we only win the division, this trade sucks - whether we re-sign Garcia or not. -
Slow dowwwwn, buddy. Frank is a good player that could bring something that the Sox need in a trade. He's just not one of the greatest players in baseball let alone all time. He's half a ballplayer - and the half he plays hasn't been worth his crappy attitude over his career. What have the Sox won with Frank Thomas - (drum roll, please)...nothing. "Half the greatest players of all time" cost their teams outs and runs??!! What? That's idiotic. If they cost their teams outs and runs on a consistent basis they wouldn't be one of the greatest players of all time.

HUH??!! You would take Buehrle or maybe Loaiza over Wood, Prior or Zambrano? Are you crazy? We have 3 major league starters and they have probably the best starting 5 in baseball. I would take Barrett over Olivo, D. Lee over Konerko and Alou over Carlos. I hate the Cubs. They will win their division by >5games before the season's over. The Sox will be around .500 in 3rd place.

Comparing a "great" pitcher with a "great" DH is just dopey. Even though a pitcher plays only 1/5th of the games, he is responsible for every pitch thrown while he is playing. You know that that is infinitely more important than any DH. Maybe you were just trying to be argumentative because nobody could ever believe that. I never said Frank wasn't an excellent offensive player - in the class of the players you named. I just said that he can't be put in a category of "greatest players in the game" because he doesn't play the field. Interesting how you didn't name 1 DH in that group. If somebody wanted him bad enough to give up young quality starting pitching, Frank is GAWN.

The Sox' current bad situation is not just because of Mark Prior. :fthecubs 1. The Sox have 3 major league starters - and NOTHING after that. 2. They've lost a series to the Expos this week and should have lost one to the Indians. 3. They will lose 2 out of 3 (or be swept) by the Cubs this weekend. 4. Their best player is injured and will walk at the end of the season. 5. Their chief rivals in the division won a series against Boston this past week and are just hitting their stride and have a 3 game lead as the Sox are collapsing. 6. Most importantly, this team has shown a consistent lack of heart for years now and although I thought in May they had overcome it, the same old Sox have returned during the June swoon.

10 GB is not time to panic - it's time to quit and think about the Bears.

You can't be serious. You just can't. The fact that Thomas has been hitting well lately can't possibly make you want to keep him on this team if the right player in a trade comes along. This guy is not part of any long term White Sox future and has been a cancer many times during his career. He's half a player when he hits well and obviously less than that when he's hitting poorly. I would trade him in a heartbeat for a young starter with some potential or a position player who can both field and hit. IMO no DH can ever be considered "one of the best players in baseball" because he only plays half the game. As for my knowledge of baseball, my guess is that most knowledgeable baseball people would say that the chances of the Sox winning the AL Central this year is less than the Twins. If that's true, then the GM needs to make a decision about next year and trade his tradable players at a time when they're most valuable.

Unfortunately, this is the "Perfect Storm" I've been afraid of all season. The Cubs will sweep the Sox this weekend, they lose their #4 pitcher and are down to 3 major league starters, Minnesota is healthy and showing that they continue to be the class of this division hands down and Cleveland just showed this week that they are at least as good as the Sox - if not better. I see no way for the Sox to win this division as they are currently constituted. The problem is that I don't trust KW to reshape the Sox for next year correctly. There is simply no way to overlook the Ritchie and Koch debacles. Those two moves were so bad that KW needs to be the first to be fired. Ordonez should be traded ASAP for pitching. Bring up Borchard now and let him get half a season before next year. Konerko, Valentin and (if anyone will take him) Thomas should also be moved.

I'd have left him in to start the ninth, but pulled him after the double. I agree with walking Cabrera, too but I would have let Shingo pitch the rest of the ninth. As for Garland being selfish, unless you can read his mind I don't think you can tell what he was thinking with a 2-0 count.
-
:dips*** That's just about the dumbest thing I've read on these boards. Trading Garland would be idiotic. He pitched a great game. Ozzie left him in too long and the offense didn't show up. Unbelievable. Did you even watch the game?

The Sox dont need any changes in the bullpen or in CF. They do need Magglio back and another starter desperately. The thing is, they need the new starter before the next time the 5th slot needs to pitch. I would like to see a big trade right before the Cubs series to pump everybody up - otherwise I think we are going to get hammered next weekend. It's not panic time, but what's it called just shy of panic?

The Official Bring Back Diaz Thread
Ozzietheairedale replied to AngelasDaddy0427's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wonder if Ozzie wasn't sending a message to KW that none of these minor leaguers is a fix for the 5th starter position on a team that has hopes of winning a pennant. Hopefully, it worked. The fact is that none of these guys - Diaz, Munoz, Rauch and Cotts - are ready to be major league pitchers. Cotts is only up because he's left handed and Wunsch is a walking injury list. Unfortunately, every other major league team now also knows that the Sox' best minor league arms are not ready for the majors. Before trotting out all of them to fail, KW may have been able to get something in trade for 1 or 2 of them - now they are basically worthless until next year. -
The series in Montreal is critical. All of a sudden the Twins are playing well and, look out, but here come the Cubs. They are on a roll and I'm really worried about them burying us in a few days. I agree that losing 2 out of 3 to the World Champs is not so terrible, but we need to pound somebody like the Expos before we have to play the Cubs.
-
A couple of things I liked about these statements: 1) KW's #1 job is to win this year. Admittedly, he needs to consider next year, but his first priority has to be this year. I'm glad to see that he's not going to trade Maggs (unless, I suppose, the Sox fall out of contention before the trade deadline). The 14 mill and the draft choices are compensation enough for next year. 2) I was suspicious about the earlier article that had no direct quotes from Maggs but multiple quotes from unnamed sources. It's good to hear Van Dyke say that Maggs will not say that negotiations have broken down.

Disheartening Article: Magglios GAWN in 05.
Ozzietheairedale replied to Flash Tizzle's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I was just wondering... Do you have inside information on "our financial situation"? Since you probably don't know anything about the Sox' financial situation, I don't understand your assumptions. The only thing we do know is that the Sox have apparently CHOSEN to not meet Magglio's demands. Maybe his demands are unreasonable or maybe the Sox feel more confident spending their money elsewhere. Or maybe the whole thing is a negotiating ploy. I'm surprised there are no direct quotes from Magglio himself that the negotiations have broken down. Whatever the reason, don't tell me it's because I don't understand their "financial situation" - as if you do. -
You're absolutely right sox-r-us. What you say really points out the fact that KW needs to be working the phones big time. The lack of a 5th starter is going to take its toll on the bullpen eventually and having Kroch out there taking up space will take its toll as well. I think it's time to really make an attractive offer to the Mariners for Garcia or Guardado or, preferably both. Crede should be attractive to them and perhaps a minor league pitcher or outfielder.
-
The Foulke trade IS a bad trade for the two reasons you just gave: 1) The Sox SHOULD have re-signed Foulke - I don't know how you know that we COULDN'T. 2) So far, Cotts has done nothing to justify giving up on Foulke. A good question would be "Would you trade Cotts and Koch for Foulke today"? The obvious answer is yes, yes, yes. Hell, I'd throw Crede in for good measure.
-
I know there's alot of Mariotti bashing on this board - but, as usual, he got it exactly right again. It looks like losing Foulke for Koch has to rank right next to the Ritchie trade as the two biggest blunders of KW's regime. I'm willing to try Shingo for a few weeks and concentrate on getting another starter.
-
I just thought that a "rant" against Ozzie and the fact that you've "seen enough" was way out of proportion for the situation. This was a very minor issue in terms of evaluating Ozzie's managerial capabilities - and it just seemed like you were way over the top. The teams in first in mid June despite the fact that it has lost it's best player and it's closer. Hard to give up just yet. Jeez!
-
You've had enough? Of what? First place? :dips*** How can you criticize using a middle reliever with a 6 run lead in the ninth? Ozzie was exactly right with the way he used the bullpen last night. If you can't trust a guy to hold a 6 run lead for 1 inning, he should be released. I think the Ozzie bashing has reached an all time stupid-level with this criticism.
-
The ideal thing to do would be to trade him to somebody for just about anything. Obviously, the Sox would have to eat most of his salary but maybe there is somebody out there who thinks they've got the answer on how to turn Koch around and would be willing to part with a middle reliever or minor league starter.
-
They see 6 million dollars down the f***ing drain.

Where is Anthony007 tonight? Hmmm. :dips***

Looks like even somebody who hasn't pitched in the majors can be right once in a while. Hate to say I told you so....
