I've tried to work this out. I guess you'd need 6 starter-relievers; plan on 3 innings each (that may be too many innings) and they can pitch every other day. And then a bullpen as, inevitably, some will need relief. That would leave a pen of 7 or so. You can do that relatively cheap in terms of talent and $. Trade your good starting pitching prospects and put most resources into hitting and defense. It might work...something I can see why a team like the Rays would try.

I've wondered if he can't go back to being a starter starter. Regardless, he has a WHIP near 1, averaging over 12Ks per 9...not sure why we aren't crowing about Jace Fry.

Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I said it a couple of weeks ago, and I'll stick with it: the Sox draft 6th, after the Orioles, Royals, Tigers, Padres and Marlins. It's not a matter of just high school, but if they don't draft better than they have over the last few seasons, it doesn't matter anyway. Some of the playing .500 for the last 2 months is foolsgold; but there is also some legit improvement. -
That's the thing - Omar needs to be the primary so that he can work on his defense. Castillo needs to be moved

Sox rank 1st in triples, 4th in steals in AL
GreenSox replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
And, over the last month, something like 3rd in homers. If you look at these auditioned hitters (Delmonico, Leury, Davidson, Palka) - none look like stars, but all of them are pretty good and certainly good enough to find a place on the 25. The Sox are going to have to make some moves - and hopefully not just cut some of these guys. And what they still don't have is a CF and 3B; they have a catcher who can hit, but not one who can catch. But, heck, Engel's hitting is slowly improving...a little more time... -
Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
GreenSox replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This pitcher isn't much, but because he isn't much in AA, it doesn't mean much that he's Rule 5 eligible. And Avilan isn't much either, for a major league reliever. -
Of course they haven't and they won't. The last "window" was never met , but quickly forgotten once the rebuild was announced. Why should the FO bring accountability upon itself by announcing a window?
-
yea I forgot about that. Anyway, Avilan and Cedeno are LOOGYs, and probably have little, if any, trade value (and if they do, they absolutely should be moved). Bummer's probably a LOOGY. Fry is not and hopefully Frare isn't either.
-
I'd like to see what Frare can do in September, if not before. He's been a beast this season. There certainly is plenty of room for him in the bullpen.
-
Rodon gives the Sox some much needed pitching stability; they have plenty of time to trade him...not to mention that the Sox control him for a year or two in what SHOULD be their contending period. And really, how many more top 10 draft choices, top 100 prospects does Hahn need to fix this thing? He's had an abundance of them. None have done much at all on the major league level. We would have seen more progress had Fulmer, Giolito, Lopez, and Moncada performed to expectations. I'm not saying that you can't always use top 100 prospects. Obviously, the more you have the better. But it's not like the Sox have a deficit in that regard that is causing this rebuild to linger. On the other hand, Abreu is NOT controlled in the contention window.
-
As retool; they don't rebuild. They cycle players out. Which is what the White Sox started to do in 2013 and should have stuck to doing....but they did the opposite and decided that Todd Frazier, Adam Laroche and Melky Cabrera were transformational players.
-
Optimistically: 2022 A rebuild should take 3 years, imo. They should be good in 2020. I don't think they will be. I'm optimistic that JR will clean out his FO after 2020; optimistic that he will hire a quality FO; and optimistic that there will still be enough young talent for a new FO to fix it in a year or two.

Kenny's over-selling it.

I liked McCarthy a lot with the Sox. But Danks was just as good and for 2008, a lot better. Williams made several important trades after the 2007 Guillen and injury-driven debacle, especially for the Carlos Quentin. Even Swisher 1 wasn't that bad; it was cowtowing to Guillen and giving him away in Swisher 2 that was the problem.

Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Detroit will probably pass the Sox. They perfected last 6-weeks-of-the-season-tanking last year. They are really good at it. The Sox always try to win. I wonder why the Sox keep so many older guys and low value LOOGYS who really don't have a future in this bullpen...but I suppose tanking is part of it. -
Unfortunately for the Sox bullpen, they don't get to face Sox hitters.
-
Since 2006, the Sox have been in the top 10 in ERA once; top 15 4 times; bottom 15 9 times. It's not a matter of liking/hating. Is the job getting done or not? And how could someone with those results be some untouchable guru?

White Sox Vs Cleveland 8.12 game thread
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2018 Season in Review
Covey needs to keep that ball at the knees or below. He was throwing it high against the Yankees last Sunday, and I presume he's doing it today as well. -
If so, it's yet another poor value trade of a secondary veteran. Sox had 2 LOOGYs they couldn't get rid of in July.
-
Anderson, Moncada, Lopez, Giolito and Fry WILL be pieces; but if they don't improve, they will be the fillers or bullpen pieces of a contending team (presuming we have a contending team). Leury and Yolmer look like solid bench/utility players. Narvaez and Palka may be; Narvaez has to improve his defense (and consistently hit above ops .750.); Palka has to advance from bust/boom status. But none look like key pieces, at least as of now.
-
No question -because this thing is dependent on the returns from Eaton, Sale and Q. The Royals, for trading their Frazier alone, got interesting players. The Tigers got a starting 3b from the Cubs for 2 month spare parts. The Brewers got a top reliever and starting 3B for trading secondary players. And the list goes on. Rick Hahn brings in Gillaspie, Cordell and Tilson. And #1 draft choices aren't exactly turning into Bryant and Correa. Or more to the level of pick, Springer or even Happ. He better hit on the returns for Eaton, Sale and Q. Whining doesn't help, but excuses don't help either.
-
Our draft head was with the Sox for 3 years, Braves for 3 years, and with the Sox for last 11 years. That he came from the Braves is quite the spin. And he was with Laumann all of those years until Laumann's retirement.
-
He's got an elite educational background, not uncommon with modern GMs. He's spent his front office entire career with one team - not ideal. He's already had a chance - and he failed. People get 2nd chances, but usually with a different organization. Too many excuses. I don't see much discernible progress...sometimes there isn't any and teams just suddenly improve. Nevertheless, there should be some timetable and some accountability - and on Williams as well.
-
He always seemed like a waiver deal guy. Teams get more desperate in August, and he will clear waivers. And if by some miracle he doesn't, that's fine too: one more spot for a young player.

Now is the time....
