  1. Adam Jones fits the Hahn/Williams profile. The Shields trade was definitely worse. While both were basically negligent, at least the Sox were actually in the race in 2012 and had reason to make a trade. Hahn was rubbing his rabbit's foot in 2016. And with all due respect to Escobar's nice 2018, Tatis has far more value.
  2. Indeed. It's still not too late. The Shields deal was all Hahn. Hahn learned the game from Kenny Williams. He's the only guy he ever worked for in baseball. Sure he may have wanted to rebuild before Kenny did, but they are aligned. The Shields trade was a lazy effort, similar to Williams' 2012 trades for Liriano and his 5.31 ERA and Myers.
  3. In nearly 2 years of the rebuild, not a single prospect or acquisition has turned the corner as a major leaguer, with the possible exceptions of Covey and Fry. We're looking at 2023 at this rate. Good for the org's sacred cows, I supposed.
  4. That's the move if they want Abreu for the future - trade then sign. As for his importance on this team, this team is 20+ games below .500 in June, and falling. What are we talking about here? As for the Astros not giving up good prospects, the Brewers, Pirates, Phillies and Brave each have an Astros prospect(s) that has been more productive in the majors than anyone the Sox have received in the rebuild, to date.
  5. .964, 850, .820, .906, .830. His down years, which are solid, are similar. But it would be nice to trade him in an up year, which looked like was happening a month ago.
  6. Chris Sale >>>>>>>>>> Abreu; 3 years of control >>>> 1.5 years. Chris Sale + 3 years returned equivalent of 2 Whitleys Therefore, Abreu +1.5 years <<<<< 1 Whitley. On a side note, Abreu has not had a great year due to a terrible last month in which his OPS has dropped over .100
  7. Chris Sale brought 2 top 25 prospects and 1 good secondary piece. By that return, Abreu won't deliver a top 50. But, they can get a couple of good players and should still trade him.
  8. The Brewers starting LF and closer, one the Braves best starters, the Pirates 3b and a solid starter all came from the Astros farm. They won't trade their favorite few guys, but that system is so deep every year, there are plenty of good players to be had. The Astros were on Abreu heavily when the Sox signed him.
  9. That might work to justify a miserable Shields effort. Sox need Rodon to dominate. Cut Thompson, send Engel to AAA;
  10. Yes I agree. All we have is hope with nothing to base it on. But there is hope. But JR wasn't always like this. He fired Hemond, fired Piersall, let Caray walk, fired Larusa, fired Hawk, rehired Hawk, fired Torborg, fired Himes.... And then one day he hired Ron Scheuler and for some reason he became the chosen one and from then it has been all in the family.
  11. Rooney was a professional announcer; Wills was a professional. Farmer is like the rest of the organization.
  12. And why the heck do you bunt when down late in the game especially when you've already burned though half your bullpen, and the other half could use a night off? But it's a happy clubhouse that pays proper respect to the FO and that's what's important. This org. hasn't shown any interest in hiring independent professionals in 2 decades.
  13. And 3 weeks later, they decided to rebuild. And the same FO that butchered all of the above was given the privilege of conducting the rebuild. what an org.
  14. Then I assume you were absolutely shocked when they drafted Fulmer, Carson.
  15. The White Sox had him on the 40 for most of the year; they now have Minaya and Volstead.
  16. The Sox control Rodon through 2021. So that would be 2 years of prime contention. Good teams will lose players in free agency; you just have to replace them, usually with younger players. Some churn is healthy, as it brings in new people, new faces, new ideas (the org. as a whole could use some churn). And they can always trade him in the future; trade him next year, and you'll get a lot more as his value is set. Sure he could pitch poorly between now and then, but the Sox wouldn't get much for him now anyway. The Sox could also use a pitcher who "knows the ropes." It's refreshing to have one who isn't on the downside of his career, unlike Shields et al.
  17. Beck and Volstad have both been better than Santiago this year.
  18. I can't see Jones in the "need to be a good offer" category. That said I can't say I expect him to be dealt as he isn't having a good year. Abreu's understandably there. Are they even entertaining trading Yolmer? It's not like guys are lining up to play 3rd in this organization.
  19. No Cease is puzzling, but it's offset by Burdi's inclusion.
  20. Move any and all. I was an early advocate of moving Fry, but I would demand a return; and I understand why the Sox would be reluctant to do it. Fry is a prospect who looks like he has a complete game, and we immediately ship him out - that is certainly risky. Same with Abreu - I would move him, but I understand why they wouldn't. They could move him next season, and they would still get some value, while keeping his leadership/clubhouse value for another year. But guys like Shields/Santiago and soon Gonzalez are cloggers more than anything. Move them ASAP, if possible.
  21. What is gained by being catty about who you will pick? So the Reds think we may pick Singer: okay, if we pick him they can pick any of the rest, if we don't,they pick who's left. it's not like you can trade picks. I can see if it if, say, a team had a comp pick in the top 10 plus their own top 10 - in that case, who they pick would involve strategy as well as picking the best player available. Otherwise, maybe it helps in contract negotiation to show that you didn't complete focus on one guy; and the drama and uncertainty is good for draft show ratings. But basically it boils down to a FO not wanting to say who they would have picked if they guy they did pick wasn't available.
  22. I like these moves. Bummer is better than Beck, but they have enough lefties for now. Cedeno needed to come up so he can be flipped, if possible. He barely pitched in 2017, but was good in 2015 and 2016. I love ya Trayce, but Palka needs to play every day even though the defense will take a big hit. I thought Santiago's best work over his years with the Sox was as a short-inning reliever. I'm sure he'll be long relief, due to need.
