  1. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 19, 2018 -> 03:03 PM) I think trading Hansen is dangerous until we know what we have in Giolito & Lopez. Maybe next year it’s a different story, but I’m not giving up one of my few guys who has a chance to be a legit TOR starter. We can always buy an OF in free agency if need be, high end starting pitching is a different story. Trading Hansen is also dangerous because he 1) could be an ace (the Sox have only 1 other prospect who fits that category) and 2)the Sox don't have as much young pitching as they need, much less what some think they have (excess? Yikes!). For all his hype, Yelich just isn't a transformational player. It's too early lock into the good-not-great veterans.
  2. He certainly landed on his feet: job cover a major league team with an ascending publication. Congrats to him. I enjoyed his work covering the Sox.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 05:21 PM) He could. However, a guy who spent 9 years in the minors with decent stats and who has been decent to below average probably won't advance to good. He can still play but be in the role of which he is most suited, utility guy who can play multiple positions. That's why I think he can. he played 6 years in the minors with decent stats (bad, really). Suddenly, in 2016 he sports a .793 OPS in Charlotte - he had never been close to that before at any level of the minor leagues. Then last year, he does a decent job in the majors, taking another step up. I think there's a decent chance he takes a third step up this year.
  4. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 11:38 AM) Why does he need to be in AAA? He's not an actual prospect. His likely major league role is as a 4th OF. There's no harm in letting him do that. Because his hitting is substandard, even for a 4th/5th outfielder. He's good enough defensively to offer 1 more year to find out of he can develop the bat to at least 4th OF level (and he'd be a good one, if he can). He's shown flashes with that good AFL Anyway, I like the projected Sox lineup....it's a good rebuild lineup (better in many ways than the "go for it" teams). Add Machado the following year and it's pretty good, if backed by pitching (which has a loooong way to go). REally looking forward to a full year of Delmonico...promising start last year and he takes pitches, which is refreshing.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 10:29 AM) If Tilson makes the team, I think they do this C Castillo 1B Abreu 2B Moncada SS Anderson 3B Sanchez CF Tilson LF Leury RF Garcia DH Delmonico Bench: Narvaez, Saladino, Engel, Davidson I like it other than Engel...he needs to be in AAA if he's not starting. Can that guy we got from the Brewers play CF?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 11:04 AM) The latest Garfein podcast with Cooper is a good listen. https://art19.com/shows/white-sox-podcast/e...fc-9219b3999ec6 I enjoyed hearing Cooper lay waste to this "good in the clubhouse" nonsense.
  7. That's another reason to keep Sanchez..not that they will deal Anderson, but in case his plate discipline and overall hitting doesn't improve. I agree that the Sox are light in prospects after the top 15 or so; but I think they really are beyond the point where they should buy many flip candidates....they need to start building the young players. They need to develop their farm through their own drafting and development. Not particularly interested in trading for Yelich... it's a year early and he's a good player, not a great player.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 04:24 PM) I'm somewhat surprised the D-Backs or Rockies aren't in on him if we're talking about NL teams. Because he's terrible defensively....that takes its toll. It's kind of too bad that this FA market didn't come up next year, when the Sox had a better handle on which of their players are keepers. There may be some bargains for various reasons (including the stronger class next year). It's just too early for the Sox to discard players, because some of these guys who showed improvement last year, will another big step this year...just don't know who.
  9. I would put Engel in AAA to work on his bat, which is currently nowhere near good enough. But he has enough talent that warrants keeping him; nothing to be lost giving him a full year in AAA.
  10. This is the time to find out whether Davidson, et al, are players going forward; it's not the time to assume they aren't. there will be Nunez' available in the future to stopgap.
  11. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 14, 2018 -> 08:11 AM) So to avoid the TLDR posts, I’m greatly concerned these failures will impact our rebuild in the long-run unless we see sudden & vast improvements. Teams like the Cubs, Yankees, & Astros have been successful because they’ve been able to use their LatAm signings to fill holes & maintain their winning ways. Will be able to do the same without the prospect depth these LatAm signings are supposed to provide? What say you soxtalk? Those orgs (add Rangers and Padres) use international signings as a 2nd draft. The Sox really haven't for the most part, which has contributed to a lackluster farm over the years. That said, don't forget Robert...the Sox just used their international assets in a different way.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 11, 2018 -> 06:40 PM) When JD Martinez went from a DFA guy to breakout, he had a .389 BABIP. The next season it went down to about .340 but he added homers. I think Avi could do the same thing. He should hit a lot more than 18. Avi and his development will be one of the more interesting things to watch this seasons. He certainly could make another big leap in production. I'm glad the Sox are keeping him to find out.
  13. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Jan 13, 2018 -> 09:14 PM) Astros actually had money to spend but they are basically saying we'd rather swing a trade then do an Arrietta deal. This is a much better move than spending $100 million on Arrietta. But an org. needs real depth to pull it off - Astros have it.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2018 -> 07:50 PM) This is something the White Sox are going to have to figure out at some point - what do you do when frontline talent is 2 years from free agency and not behaving like a star? Hold onto them and hope they become a frontline player and you're 1 year from free agency or take the best deal you can? Heck, that's the same scenario we have right now with Garcia. If you are actually contending, you keep the player or trade for a younger major leaguer; if you are trying to contend, but haven't been, it's a tough call (Pirates). But the Sox are in the position of not contending and they have 2 of these players...they really should trade them or extend them over the next year. (Abreu and Avi).
  15. Moran is the highest upside piece the Pirates got. He's the kind of player I'd like to see the Sox make a move for as they try to cover the few areas in which they don't have budding prospects and start creating a team out of young talent.
  16. To the Astros, what they gave up were largely spare parts....they had what they traded covered. But there still was some talent in what they gave up. Musgrove can be a good 4 and a very good 5 on a contending team. That has value. And the Pirates obviously wanted ML ready players, so the ceiling won't be as high as if you trade for A ball players.
  17. Having to pay nearly $5 million for Miguel Gonzalez should send the message in bold, flashing color letters: Stockpile the young pitching!
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:00 PM) Guys who come to mind... Martin Prado, Kelvin Herrera, Matt Kemp, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir, Jacob Ellsbury,... Not worth it, unless you just cut them immediately.
  19. QUOTE (GermanSock @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 07:09 PM) So fangrpaphs projections are too low by 10+ games? I didn't look at fangraphs projections, but if they predicted 62-65 wins, then, yes, I think they are. I realize the sox played half of 2017 with Q, Frazier, Kahnle, et al. But on the other hand, the win total was depressed by a ridiculously bad July, caused, imv, somewhat by the trauma from all the trades and trade rumors. The Sox had some injuries - Leury, who was having an improved season, missed extended time, and caused the Sox to use a player who should have been in AAA (and hopefully will be in 2018). They may also get Nate back; and some of the less experienced buys in the pen improved. It just doesn't look like a rotten 65 win team to me. It looks like an interesting and hungry 74 win team!
  20. Both of these guys have 2 years max control, so they both need to be moved in July really (although they could wait a year). But Peter was going to wither on the vine in Chicago, and there is room for these pitchers to play and be moved for younger prospects.
  21. Didn't the Sox not protect Peter in Rule 5? Pretty decent return for a player they were willing to lose for nothing.
  22. They'll be a little better than last year: 72-75 wins. Avi will have a good year and they'll sell him in July. Hopefully Soria too. No need to grovel for a top 5 pick. 5-12 is fine.
  23. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 12:31 PM) Am I the only person who has no idea what this thread's supposed to be about? From what I gather, many of the major players at Southsidesox are leaving and going to soxmachine; Sox machine had been dormant for many years.
