40-man roster decisions and the Rule 5 Draft
GreenSox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) Juan Minaya (makes the roster 30) Dump Petricka Keep Minaya -
Enjoy the offseason - the appetizer is coming soon: GM meetings and then the main course - the Winter Meetings - coming up.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 11:53 AM) And while I think the mentorship role is important, I also think having him a key member of the team is important towards recruiting high-end free agents next offseason. Sox have players who can assume the mentorship role and a manager who can communicate with anyone. Abreu is a good player, and I agree with you on recruiting free agents...

40-man roster decisions and the Rule 5 Draft
GreenSox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Due to the number of rebuilders, there is a bigger risk to losing some of these guys. They can be stashed on the roster if teams aren't expecting to win anyway. The Sox did it last year with a pitcher who barely pitched above A Ball - and our eligibles had at at least the credentials he did. 2 of the 3 players from Yanks were Rule 5 eligible and still in the low minors - Yankees knew what they were doing. Keep: clark, Jimenez, Guerrero, Peter, Polo, Adolpho, Clarkin, Cooper, Walsh Keep either Hayes or Gillaspie. I like Lechich, but I'd chance it. That's 10 spots and need 5 openings. Not a problem. Dump: Albequerque, Farquar, Petricka, Beck, Covey If they need more room, dump Fry, and combination of May, Hansen, W Garcia. I suppose they could dump Putnam, but he's actually been a good pitcher They may need a couple of spots for veteran arms; but Minaya and Infante (both of whom pitched pretty darn well last year) can fill that role. -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 05:54 PM) https://bosoxinjection.com/2017/10/15/poten...get-jose-abreu/ Eduardo Rodriguez is an interesting place to start trade talks. Very good place to start - like him a lot. 4 years of control. Bradley Jr was the other piece - good player, but 3 years. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 01:04 PM) Jose Abreu straight up for Jackie Bradley Jr. Who says no? White Sox

QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) PolishPrince Offseason Plan on Southside Sox. I thought Rich Hahn did an outstanding job with majority of his moves except for one. Thought the Rutherford package was a little light with Kahnle and his 4 years of service time before hitting free agency. Yea, thought it light, too. Should have split those guys up. Anyway, like the thoroughness of your plan, and the intent of your trades - young player for young player. Like some of your moves more than others (I wouldn't give anything of value for Swithart, e.g.) I think we need more pitching that most people do.

Once Soto went down, the Sox had the best catching they've had in years; not "good enough" for a contender, but still the best in years and good enough for now, with Narvaez on the upswing.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) Plenty of reason to trade Avi this offseason if we get something that counts as "fair", certainly not requiring being blown away. 2 years away from free agency, price going up, if he's this good then he's going to be very expensive to keep and we may not want to pay that price, if he isn't this good then the best deals available for him will be this offseason. Hard to affix his value (and thus determine "fair"): 1 good season (very good), but with a high BABIP; still not many homers, although that may come and more doubles certainly would increase in a different park. Doesn't play a position of scarcity. Fair just may not be very much, so there may be no point. July candidate perhaps.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 03:09 PM) Haha they would not turn down Bogaerts and Bradley Nor would Boston offer those players (not Bogaerts, anyway)
-
He looks like a decent pick up. But it’s just that the Sox seem to have several guys at the same level playing that same position. Now if they’re moving Abreu and/or Avi, then there may be a need for more intense competition.
-
QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) I find it very unlikely Adolfo or Clarkin are taken in the Rule 5 No reason to take the chance. Both are very good prospects. And Clarkin easily could be pulled from the Sox, as it’s not a difficult thing to hold a pitcher on the staff, As the Sox did with Covey.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 01:34 PM) I still don't see any way that they tender Putnam a contract. I know they like it when he's on the mound, but I don't know how you can guarantee the roster spot of a 30 year old who has spent that much time on the DL. A non-tender and minor league re-signing seems like the most likely route they go with him. Can certainly put Petricka in that number; Putnam's best years were better than Petricka's. Even Infante and Minaya, two rather modest relievers, pitched as well last year as Petricka ever has.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 11:45 PM) http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/cws/roster/40-man/ I would guess that there are at least 5 (and probably more) prospects in the minors that they will have to add to the 40...the pitcher they got from the Yankees comes immediately to mind. But there are a lot of names on that 40 that they could easily let go in order to protect some prospects.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) 40 man roster currently sits at 34. Do you have a link to the 40 man? Thanks
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) Prospects. Yeah. Then get some more relievers and repeat - I can go for that. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:54 PM) I am guessing the Sox gave the Padres Tatis because the Padres covered $30M of salary. They shouldn't have had to give a good prospect to cover 30M of Shields' salary, as shaky as Shields was.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:51 PM) Don't forget who the Boston GM is now, Dave Dombrowski. Look at the condition he left the Tigers and look at the direction Boston is heading. DD is a baseball Terra-forming machine. They might. But I think it would be for a few 2nd tier prospects..nothing elite. As for the Sox, I'd hope we'd go for a more athletic team.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 08:29 AM) If you've got a team ready to compete right now, "3 years of an all star center of the order hitter at market rate" is something you would totally pay a good price for. Maybe you don't empty your entire system, but it's not unreasonable to expect to pay a solid prospect price for that. But that's not the deal you are getting with him. If he sucks after 3 years, you have to pay him for an extra 8. thus, any deal must be severely discounted. If he had only that 3 year contract, it would be much easier to set a market rate. But he doesn't. These bashers who are slugs defensively aren't my cup of tea anyway.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) -What I think the Sox will do and should do is spend big on the bullpen. I think they should put a lot of money into the bullpen. Even if it takes a 3 year deal for a good arm. Hard to trust relievers for 3 years. They'll need a few pitching arms just to eat innings. Otherwise, FAs to hopefully flip in July. They just aren't ready to assess long term needs.
-
Mine plan would be to stockpile as much pitching as possible...and be on the alert for a CF and SS opportunities. Be careful with Rule 5 - use it if you can for bullpen, but there is frequently a crunch with rebuilding teams.
-
The upside is fine....you get a good player for 3 years at basically market rate...and then he opts out...fair enough. But the downside is too severe. If he sucks, not only did you throw away prospects for an under-performer, you're stuck with him through his 30s until he's near 40 and the team is c $250 million lighter. That price really smashes your face in for a bad trade. How do you price a player like that in trade? To me, it's basically a contract trade, so it ends up like a terrible FA signing if things go south, but no more.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) Sox next manager is really just a countdown till Thome or AJP are ready. good lord.

Eliminate the divisions. You can put the last two wildcards in for that one game deal

QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) I think part of it is we are mostly looking at cheap buy low, sell high guys. I don't think we are trying to name every prospect that has lost some value so we should try to trade for them because it's a "bargain" The title says just buy low; the OP used a young player as his suggestion. If you are looking for guys to flip, well, I have no idea. I don't think that should be a prime concern. They will need a veteran starter and a reliever to absorb innings...if they can be flipped in July, then that's fine. But anyone they sign should be cheap. I'd still like to see them look at Martes; Astros have moved prospects and young players.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 06:45 PM) Who do they trade to get Martes exactly? Thats not a buy-low candidate. Because he stunk it up this year. His price should be discounted. He looks like a good Cooper candidate to me, where his value in Chicago is greater than his value in Houston The OP also used a similar example. Better candidates, to me than aging veterans, for whom the price is down because the production is down, with very little chance of recovery. Rarely are they a discount. What is your definition of "buy-low" candidate.

QUOTE (turnin' two @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) , and they have their rock star closer of the future( Burdi?), That's a bit presumptive. I'm surprised he's turning down $15 million. He should take it and then go for his 3 year deal the next year. Multi year and age doesn't fit in the Sox plans.
