No hurry; they have 2 years to move him. And if he builds on this season, they may want to keep him around. It is build up time.
-
the Sox have a bunch of position players who auditioned this season...many of them look the same. They can bring them all back - most of them earned another year - but who is going to pitch for this organization next year? I wonder if they can't trade a couple for some young 5th starter/bullpen types.

Thank you, Tim!

QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 06:10 PM) This team looks good enough to compete for the WC or division next year. Indiana have some stats who are aging. Never know what happens in baseball. Sox will also have Kopech and eloy at some point. Rodon/Kopech/Lopez/giolito/ shields or guerrero or Stephens or Adams 1B abreu 2B moncada SS TA/leury 3b Davidson/nicky/yolmer DH delmonico/davidson/abreu RF avi CF leury/engel LF nicky/eloy C: TA/Kevin smith Supersubs yolmer/leury Bullpen - wing it. I think this team will be a pleasant surprise and the Sox very May well have a chance to compete. I notice you omitted the pitching staff....there's your answer.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 06:07 PM) Carson Fulmer was a first round, top ten draft pick selected in between Andrew Benintendi and Ian Happ. I, for one, would very much like to see him develop into something far more than just a reliever. Today's performance was encouraging in that respect. Amen Tankers can root for Pelfrey and Shields and the entire bullpen to get lit up. But today was good.

QUOTE (GermanSock @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 07:43 AM) if you want a hs pick it has to be a fast athletic guy who can play center or shortstop. and for good reason; also need some power potential. I'm more of a volume guy on pitching. Draft a lot of it, but because of the high wash-out rate, I wouldn't use the top few picks on it.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) 2014, 2015 You and I differ in our definitions of "Good" then. 1.37 peak WHIP with K totals below 7 don't qualify for me.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 03:55 PM) Is Petricka done or was this just a bad year due to injuries? Wondering if hes someone they are counting on to be in the bullpen next year. Petricka's been in the majors for 5 years, and has yet to add a season that could be described as good. I guess the Sox will stick with him - someone has to pitch; but if 40 man spots get scarce, they should leave him off.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) Our Ken Berry, didn't sing and dance, but he won a couple of Gold Gloves and even made the 1967 All Star team, despite batting just .241 and collecting only 25 XBH, the entire season. And was then moved to the Angels in one of Rollie Hemond's earliest and best trades.

Carlos Rodon to the DL, will not pitch again in 2017

And thus, stockpile pitching -
Drafting early round college relievers (who do not project as pro starters) another bad habit that needs to be expunged.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 09:46 AM) Do the Sox sell high in Avi while his value is high? Does any team give up some top prospects for him? I think the Sox should sell high in him if possible and see if you can bet a top 100 prospect+ Maybe, but I don't think they'd get a whole lot for him. His HR total is low - and thus I assume his BABIP is really high. While I find that statistic at least 50% phony (it assumes a tap to the mound v. a bash off the wall is a matter of "luck"), most people in baseball seem to like it. Anyway, I think just keep him until July of 2019 and see what the offers are.

Narvaez with an OBP over .370 and his OPS is finally over .700. This is really nice development from a clever pick-up, who had been cast-off by the Rays.
-
Good Went heavily for bats in 2017 draft. Can hide mediocre hitting in spots. Can't hide mediocre or bad pitching in any spot. As said above, need for pitching is endless.
-
Looks like he needs a lot of work on his change. Good to see him working on it though - now is the time.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 1, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) Did his arm fall off? Did he have TJ? He's not a 40 year old, you don't "lose" 1st round stuff as a 23 year old with no injuries. He probably still has first round stuff. But his delivery was such that he couldn't repeat it pitch after pitch. Has that been fixed?

I think the Sox are sitting pretty well from a position player standpoint, esp. if Jiminez and Moncada can bash. They have a few players to filter through who actually have some value. May have to dress some of them up and move them in December. CF still an issue; maybe they should decide which of May or Engel has the talent to be a ML player, and put him Charlotte for a year to develop the bat.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 1, 2017 -> 04:22 AM) Like, seriously, there is no way the Sox could ever make you happy. The fact that they traded Gonzalez for anything made me happy. Like I said, I didn't expect much, and they didn't get much. This particular player has already been a pro for 4 seasons, hasn't hit at all, and will be Rule 5 eligible next year (as I read the rule), so he isn't my cup of tea among the "lottery ticket" types. Re Gonzalez, despite an average career, he pitched great the last month, so yes I hoped for something a little better. Didn't expect it, but hoped.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 1, 2017 -> 07:58 AM) Next season is going to be interesting. With Detroit in full tank, and KC going to be bad, and right around .500 keeps your playoff hopes alive, a few breakouts, who knows. The Sox schedule will feature too many games against horrid teams next year to assume a top of the draft pick anymore. On the other side, the Twins look like a playoff team, and they have a very good farm system. And the Indians will be good for a few more years....looks like they got better once Shapiro left town. Et tu, Blue Jays.
-
Statistically, he looks like a F hitter. Can't get close to .700 OPS at any minor league level. Maybe the scouts see something. Didn't expect much though.

Afternoon delight: Sox Twins 8/31 game thread
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2017 Season in Review
That was disappointing. Minaya has some talent, but has had some control issues all along - and they kind of erupted today (other teams have swung at a lot of his out-of-the-zone pitches). -
I don't think he's particularly great, but he's certainly better than some pitchers on wild card contending rotations...and he's currently pitching a lot better than that. All I can figure is that Hahn wants something of legit value for him - a reasonable "lottery ticket"...and I agree with Hahn on that.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 11:50 PM) Esteban Loaiza. Nuff said. Well, if you want to go back that far, I'll take the player they cast-off Loaiza for - Jose Contreras. A flop for the Yankees turned into the best starter on a great WS WS rotation.
-
I suppose he's a good coach - everyone says he is. Aside from Q and Sale he hasn't had much material to work with. Still, I would be fine with some fresh blood. Of course, I would be fine with fresh blood in a lot of places, including the Front Office.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 12:51 PM) 0 reason to rush him up if he has a good couple weeks in spring. Agree But habits are hard to break.
