  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 04:42 PM) 40 man roster currently sits at 34. Do you have a link to the 40 man? Thanks
  2. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) Prospects. Yeah. Then get some more relievers and repeat - I can go for that. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:54 PM) I am guessing the Sox gave the Padres Tatis because the Padres covered $30M of salary. They shouldn't have had to give a good prospect to cover 30M of Shields' salary, as shaky as Shields was.
  3. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:51 PM) Don't forget who the Boston GM is now, Dave Dombrowski. Look at the condition he left the Tigers and look at the direction Boston is heading. DD is a baseball Terra-forming machine. They might. But I think it would be for a few 2nd tier prospects..nothing elite. As for the Sox, I'd hope we'd go for a more athletic team.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 08:29 AM) If you've got a team ready to compete right now, "3 years of an all star center of the order hitter at market rate" is something you would totally pay a good price for. Maybe you don't empty your entire system, but it's not unreasonable to expect to pay a solid prospect price for that. But that's not the deal you are getting with him. If he sucks after 3 years, you have to pay him for an extra 8. thus, any deal must be severely discounted. If he had only that 3 year contract, it would be much easier to set a market rate. But he doesn't. These bashers who are slugs defensively aren't my cup of tea anyway.
  5. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) -What I think the Sox will do and should do is spend big on the bullpen. I think they should put a lot of money into the bullpen. Even if it takes a 3 year deal for a good arm. Hard to trust relievers for 3 years. They'll need a few pitching arms just to eat innings. Otherwise, FAs to hopefully flip in July. They just aren't ready to assess long term needs.
  6. Mine plan would be to stockpile as much pitching as possible...and be on the alert for a CF and SS opportunities. Be careful with Rule 5 - use it if you can for bullpen, but there is frequently a crunch with rebuilding teams.
  7. The upside is fine....you get a good player for 3 years at basically market rate...and then he opts out...fair enough. But the downside is too severe. If he sucks, not only did you throw away prospects for an under-performer, you're stuck with him through his 30s until he's near 40 and the team is c $250 million lighter. That price really smashes your face in for a bad trade. How do you price a player like that in trade? To me, it's basically a contract trade, so it ends up like a terrible FA signing if things go south, but no more.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) Sox next manager is really just a countdown till Thome or AJP are ready. good lord.
  9. Eliminate the divisions. You can put the last two wildcards in for that one game deal
  10. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) I think part of it is we are mostly looking at cheap buy low, sell high guys. I don't think we are trying to name every prospect that has lost some value so we should try to trade for them because it's a "bargain" The title says just buy low; the OP used a young player as his suggestion. If you are looking for guys to flip, well, I have no idea. I don't think that should be a prime concern. They will need a veteran starter and a reliever to absorb innings...if they can be flipped in July, then that's fine. But anyone they sign should be cheap. I'd still like to see them look at Martes; Astros have moved prospects and young players.
  11. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 06:45 PM) Who do they trade to get Martes exactly? Thats not a buy-low candidate. Because he stunk it up this year. His price should be discounted. He looks like a good Cooper candidate to me, where his value in Chicago is greater than his value in Houston The OP also used a similar example. Better candidates, to me than aging veterans, for whom the price is down because the production is down, with very little chance of recovery. Rarely are they a discount. What is your definition of "buy-low" candidate.
  12. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) , and they have their rock star closer of the future( Burdi?), That's a bit presumptive. I'm surprised he's turning down $15 million. He should take it and then go for his 3 year deal the next year. Multi year and age doesn't fit in the Sox plans.
  13. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 11, 2017 -> 08:11 PM) I'll start it off with my suggestion...Maikel Franco from the Phillies. They need pitching and have some infield depth. Wouldn't mind throwing a couple of our pitching prospects at the Phillies if they want to unload Franco. Wouldn't include any of Gio, Lopez, Kopech, Cease, or Hanson though. Who are some young names you'd like to see us acquire for relatively cheap this off season? The White Sox do not have surplus of pitching prospects. They need more actually. This is the time to stockpile pitching (even without a shortage). The Sox are also not short on infielders. Martes, pitcher, Astros, is my candidate.
  14. More likely he doesn't have the stamina for playoff baseball...at least the way he's pitched in the regular season.
  15. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 06:32 AM) Yep, with ya on Stanton. I have no interest, period. I know this won't be popular but I'm not interested in Machado either but for different reasons. 3B is brutal on the lower back and combine that with how many years he will get (8-10), I just don't trust he would hold up over the life of the contract at 3B. Now if Machado was willing to play some 1B and hit in the DH spot to give his back days off from diving at the hot corner, I would change my tune for sure. I agree, except that Machado would be nowhere near worth his money if he can't play 3rd (and he really won't be worth it at 3rd either). Stanton, Machado...largely corner-cutting that have a marginal effect on winning (they don't come free), but serve as a comforting salve for some.
  16. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:13 PM) No we didn't. We offered a very raw, lottery ticket who happened to explode in to a top 5 mlb prospect. That's like saying the Sox one time traded a 60 WAR, 600+ HR monster for an old and washed up George Bell. He was more than a lottery ticket, and he "just happened to explode" such that within 2 months of the trade he was a top 100 prospect and rising fast. The Sox didn't know what they had in Tatis; and they probably didn't really know what they were getting in Shields (how many Sox scouts were in Seattle?). Shouldn't have given a prospect of any sort for Shields- pure salary dump was more than enough.
  17. QUOTE (thedoctor @ Sep 30, 2017 -> 08:43 AM) can Covey start the last two games? He's actually pitched reasonably well recently. I was thinking another go for Pelfrey - used less than 3 innings yesterday, and it would be a shame to end his season with such a confidence-breaking start. He did throw 85 innings in those 2 2/3 innings, so maybe wait til Sunday.
  18. It would help if we'd sit Abreu and Garcia; I'm not sure why they are playing every day, regardless of the need to tank. Detroit is showing teams how tanking is properly done. They aren't even trying.
  19. I think I said this probably on page 2, but yes he hasn't walked much, and his BABIP is high; and for that reason, I doubt the offers will be equivalent to his 2017 production....and ultimately pretty modest. Thus, I think it's worth keeping him and waiting to move him.
  20. No hurry; they have 2 years to move him. And if he builds on this season, they may want to keep him around. It is build up time.
  21. the Sox have a bunch of position players who auditioned this season...many of them look the same. They can bring them all back - most of them earned another year - but who is going to pitch for this organization next year? I wonder if they can't trade a couple for some young 5th starter/bullpen types.
  22. QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 06:10 PM) This team looks good enough to compete for the WC or division next year. Indiana have some stats who are aging. Never know what happens in baseball. Sox will also have Kopech and eloy at some point. Rodon/Kopech/Lopez/giolito/ shields or guerrero or Stephens or Adams 1B abreu 2B moncada SS TA/leury 3b Davidson/nicky/yolmer DH delmonico/davidson/abreu RF avi CF leury/engel LF nicky/eloy C: TA/Kevin smith Supersubs yolmer/leury Bullpen - wing it. I think this team will be a pleasant surprise and the Sox very May well have a chance to compete. I notice you omitted the pitching staff....there's your answer.
  23. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 06:07 PM) Carson Fulmer was a first round, top ten draft pick selected in between Andrew Benintendi and Ian Happ. I, for one, would very much like to see him develop into something far more than just a reliever. Today's performance was encouraging in that respect. Amen Tankers can root for Pelfrey and Shields and the entire bullpen to get lit up. But today was good.
  24. QUOTE (GermanSock @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 07:43 AM) if you want a hs pick it has to be a fast athletic guy who can play center or shortstop. and for good reason; also need some power potential. I'm more of a volume guy on pitching. Draft a lot of it, but because of the high wash-out rate, I wouldn't use the top few picks on it.
