QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) Except Smith's been the (much) better hitter in the minors and actually rates as much the better framer thus far Smith was not good in the minors. Narvaez was worse, but Narvaez is improving. He's also 25 v 29. Heck he had a home run today. Leadoff double from the 9 hole hitter, and the manager bunts to play for 1 run.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 03:13 PM) We start a rally in our punchless pinch hitter Smith goes after the first pitch and it's a GIDP Why is Smith batting anyway? Narvaez is the better hitter. Narvaez should start 2/3 of the games anyway - let's see what we have in him. His OBP is good, the stats say his D is pretty good

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) Because adding 3 good relievers would be better than adding just 2. Especially when you bought the first 2 so cheap. But you get diminishing marginal returns on the 3rd, which makes it even less likely that the Nats would pay the price people want for Robertson (which wasn't likely to happen anyway). heck both Doolittle and Madson are having better years than Robertson. As look like they got 2 good players statistically; top 100 lists can be lagging indicators, so if their scouting is good, then they may have done well.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) Still waiting for any proof the Sox can develop a hitter they draft under the Bell regime Let's face it - there isn't much proof that this FO knows how to build a winning baseball team at all. My hope is that its Hahn's show (who hasn't proven himself either) , but reading comments here and there about how "Kenny loves player X" I'm not so sure. As for Anderson, give him time. It does take a lot of guys a couple of years, and the Sox have a couple of years. Altuve couldn't hit a lick in his first couple of years, and the Astros stuck by him. Wild pitch notwithstanding, Swarzak is the pitcher who has been getting the team out of jams this year. Teams are missing out not making a move for him.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 11:32 AM) Highly doubtful that 8 at bats are going to make a huge difference. Too small of a sample size... he could go 2 for 2 in his next at bats and be hitting .300 over that period now. His large sample size isn't particulary compelling either. He could have used a push here.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 10:48 AM) How many of our J2 guys are current Top 17, other than Adolfo? Who's #2 in our system? What about Top 30-50? Your obvious retort here is Tatis, Jr. I'm not sure what you're asking. J2? If you mean international signings, I will ask this - how many of the top prospects we just acquired were international signings? But that's not my point anyway - my point is that we just gave Texas a goldmine, and received only 1 modest prospect in return. Now we may not have had any use for that goldmine ourselves...but you could say the same about Quintana - we had no use for him the next 2 years, but we still tried to get full value.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 10:39 AM) Yes, but assuming that we did trade the full 3/4 of what we could trade here, we weren't going to sign enough guys for that cap space to matter. The fulll 3/4 seems an excessive price...that's an immense benefit to Texas and allows them to sign numerous prospects, they otherwise wouldn't be able to sign. And it costs them only 1 prospect?

QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 16, 2017 -> 10:12 AM) Since medicals on boston's side seem to be the hang up i wonder if Hahn can nix the third player and go straight for Ockimey and Mata Of course it could have been Mata with the bad physical (if that were the deal) I find it hard to believe that was the deal anyway - too much.
-
We'll see. Since the original deal was apparently agreed to (and fell through), he's 1/8, 3 Ks, a double and GIDP with the bags loaded and nobody out. Better audition today, please, Todd.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 11:08 PM) Why do you like him more? Better numbers, more speed, better defense. I don't know anything about bat speed and that sort of thing (which are obviously important). Also, I trust the Astros organization re prospects.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 10:29 PM) I kind of like Kyle Tucker more then Eloy Jimenez so I am going to be disappointed if A's got him for Gray Me too.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Remember how many pitchers the team that won the world series last year developed out of their system? They found a workaround. Give me a stellar 1-5, trade 1 or 2 of those pitchers if things go really well, and then go sign Bryce Harper or Mike Trout with the fact you have a $6 million pricetag on your starting rotation for 3 years. Basically, give me as many good players as we can find for the next year+ and worry about the rest later. i'll take the pitching approach. lack of pitching depth was a huge anchor on the 2001-2004 teams and 2010-2016. They would try to fill a spot trading for Vazquez, Edwin Jackson or the Shark, and create 2 new holes while doing so. If you always have pitching in your pipeline, you can win. And it needs to be supported with good defense. Also, at the deadline, pitching has much greater value...create a surplus, and that is a quick way to get positional talent into your system. Plus, I like the idea of NOT doing what the crowd is doing. You may get a surplus/bargain that way. I noticed that the Cubs shifted gears and had an almost all-pitching draft this year

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 08:18 PM) Sally just needs to get his timing down Maybe - but he was terrible this year before he got hurt. Yolmer has been solid.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 02:41 PM) Preller kept a database that didn't include certain damning things. Geeze That's like accounting records: One set for the investors, one for the IRS, and then the real set.

Since the Sox are going to be under penalty anyway, is there any reason not to trade all of it if they can? Is there any financial tax involved for going over? Heck, theoretically from the Rangers point of view, if they were over their pool, trading one player away to prevent a 2 year penalty is an incredible bargain.

I wonder about Henry Owens as a throw-in. Former top prospect turned epic failure.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 01:28 PM) Still not interested. Amen!

Trading flip candidates to acquire more flip candidates....sometimes this gets a little much. Sandoval is unflippable. I'm not sure a crane could flip Sandoval.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) Sounds like it is Frazier for Panda. Since Panda is coming off DL, there is medicals to clear up....................................................... Why in the world would the White Sox make that trade?

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 11:29 AM) I was talking to an Astros fan buddy of mine and he truly has no concern about the pitching staff. He said that they can hit their way out of any deficit. I pointed out that in the postseason it usually comes down to the stronger pitching staff and he seemed to believe that that rule wouldn't apply with an offense like theirs. He wants them to stand pat. It makes zero sense and, as you say, we've seen time and again the team with amazing offense come up short in the postseason. Hell, Astros fans forget about 2005 already? yea, well they've already been swept at home by Cleveland and that staff. The mistake they made was not giving up Bregman for Sale. It's a double hit - not only do they not have Sale, they have to face him twice in the playoffs.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) . But the concept of buying a vet to flip is fine. Conceptually, yes. They have one in Swarzak, whether or not that was the reasoning when signed.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) You do realize Holland was brought in to hopefully flip, and Pelfrey was signed to a minor league contract after being released as depth? Hibbard and King were potentials in Himes' core. But after that season they both fizzled. King got traded for someone worse in Cory Snyder, and Hibbard after a couple of mediocre seasons was taken in the expansion draft. After 1990 they both pitched about like what Holland and Pelfrey are giving the team now. Hibbard and King were in their mid 20s with very little mileage on them. Yes they had short shelf-lives*, but they were nothing like Holland. They weren't great, but they "bridged the gap" while the big guns developed. The Sox record on picking up these old veterans is putrid....they are so bad that they are unflippable. *each had basically 1 bad year and never pitched again - could have been injury. I just think some competent pitching, while rebuilding, will help. I am also not in favor of intentional tanking for the sake of a couple of draft spots advantage, while many are (and I understand their reasoning).

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) Ah yes, the comp pick. That's what it was. This is when comp picks first started right? So Beane traded Adkins for Durham and then got a comp pick (or picks) in the 2003 draft after he walked. I loved me some KW as GM until recent years, but good god did he have some epic fail moments. He had a lot of talent to work with when he took over. Looking back, I think his biggest weakness is that he frequently lacked pitching...2001-2004 was plagued with fifth starter problems; and 2012-2016 had 4th and 5th starter problems. They rent what they thought was a top of the rotation guy, when they really needed some good rotation depth. That's why I really hope that they start silently loading up on pitching as they move some of their pre arb players (who probably have some value) as they bring in the better prospects. Plus, the major league team needs some more dependable young pitching, instead of another round of Holland and Pelfrey. 4th or 5th starter types like they used to rebuild in 1990 - Eric King and Greg Hibbard were 4th starter talents, but they stabilized that 1990 rotation in what was a very quick rebuild after the team was torn down a couple of years before.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) Dude, I still remember where I was when that trade went down and couldn't believe that's all we got. Did we simply refuse to eat any money on his contract? I forgot why the return was ultimately such garbage. Because Kenny Williams was naive and inexperienced. We'd have gotten more with a comp pick. Not only did they sell him for a dime on a dollar, I didn't know why they had no interest in re-signing him. He was consistent as heck and didn't sign for that much.
