The Rangers closer just blew his 3rd save of the season....and he wasn't even close.

April 15th Game Thread: White Sox @ MN Twins

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 15, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) I suspect the trade talk has started to make an impact. The guy is human...how could it not? Probably so, but they had last trade deadline to get this done, all off-season to get this done. Responsibility and accountability for this (and the last 4 years), or excuses? -
QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 11:44 PM) Cardinals have said publicly they're concerned about the bullpen. Deep pockets. Decent farm. They would also be a market for Frazier if he'd get his act together. Peralta is terrible. That said, I'm not convinced that they are serious contenders. They may sell some in July.
-
Well Miller and Chapman yielded elite prospects each. On the other hand, Melancon, who might be a better comp., yielded a young reliever and a lottery prospect. But he was a pure rent. There are several teams who clearly need someone now. I know pre June trades are unusual, but some team should step to the plate. Robertson is having a great year, but he's also been a very good pitcher for several years and has another year left.

Hawk was still talking about the picks to click before he realized Anderson's ball was rolling around in the stands. But I have a feeling I'm going to miss him about a year after he's gone. -
I see the teams outside of Charlotte are just awful for the 2nd straight season. Might indicate continued issues with org depth; AAA is skewed a bit because of all of the AAAA players, but the lower levels have a higher percentage of prospects.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 08:26 PM) I will take lotto tickets for Holland and Shields no problem. An org's top 10-15 range A ball high upside guy. Just need to fill out the system with depth now. The top end talent is there. yep, I'm down for that. Heck maybe a little more. Look at Rich Hill last year.... And Robertson is pitching with authority.

Kahnle can get the Ks....maybe he's getting better...and maybe it's the umps, but stop the walks. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 05:32 PM) Who? Tell me who. Who is this miracle player we have that has the ability to step in and be better than Asche? The easiest way to put this is that Asche has done more at the major league level, than the rest of our minor leaguers have done at the minor league level. The bolded is the answer to your own question. The Sox organization knows that the guys they have either can't play, or they don't want to start their clocks in order to save another year of service. I don't know. There may not be one. But we know Asche isn't one. So give the other guys a chance. The bolded part of your response is the essence of our disagreement.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 03:46 PM) People keep making posts like this, as if there is someone who is there someone who has a future or some skill that isn't playing. It is just complaining to complain. Even as someone who is about as pessimistic as you can get about what we have done to this point, even I can realize that you are pushing a boulder up Mt Everest here. How do you know there isn't? This guy has 1200 at bats that prove he can't hit. Sox have a bunch of guys raking in AAA who haven't had that chance. Why give the chances to the guy they know can't play? The pessimism resides with those who believe that Asche is the best the Sox have, this side of Moncada. Don't lump me with you pessimists, please. My pessimism resides, not with the players, but with a front office that has shown over the years that talent evaluation isn't exactly their forte.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 12:42 PM) I've been poring over this guy's major league and minor league career, and what am I missing here? He seems like a good contact hitter with little power, suspect defense at 3rd base. Why are we spending a roster spot on a guy who appears to be Gordon Beckham without defense, especially since we have a 3rd baseman this season? I've been asking that for a month. There no upside. He fulfills none of the requirements for being on this roster. He's not someone who can be peddled; nor is he someone who has a future. I think it's likely an extension of a FO bad habit of loving proven veterans, no matter how bad they are (although they usually favor the ones who were good at some point in their career; not always though - they had a long love affair with DeWayne Wise, e.g.).

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 06:09 PM) Just an opinion on this. I'm all for the rebuild however the culture of losing that has established itself with this franchise also needs to be dramatically altered. That means you can't wait for the "kids" to come up and suddenly start stressing fundamentals, situational hitting, good base running and defense. IT STARTS NOW...TODAY. The current players on the big league roster need to be held accountable by Renteria. That means if you can't make contact with a man on 3rd and less than two out, if you make an out at 3rd on the bases with less than two out, if you can't get down a bunt or play your position you are held accountable. I can see that for mental errors. But most of this is just due to physical limitations. Just going to have to deal with that for this season. Now it's certainly true that the Sox have been lax on flaws - mental mistakes have been ignored; and the FO has thrown put teams out there, intended to contend, that were poor defensively. They need to improve on that end.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 05:39 PM) Yep. I think Hahn said after the Sale/Eaton trades that he'd like to make four or five more. he certainly needs to; closer to 7 or 8 more. Add the Mariners to the "we need relief pitching" list.
-
I'm not worried about Q - there will be a market for him. But I'm looking at markets for the other guys (1/2 the pen, Frazier, Melky, maybe Holland/Gonzalez) all of whom need to get moved and might bring some value. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) AL Central: Tigers stay in the race, dont sell off Verlander or Zimmerman. Want the Royals to stay in the race as well; they would flood the market with supply if they are out of it. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) NL Central: Pirates challenge for a WC spot. Brewers and Reds to win games so we get a higher pick. Need the Cards to be in the race, but with the still gaping hole at 3rd. And pray Frazier has something left this year. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 10:55 PM) NL West: Rockies tear it up. Padres get lucky on a lot of games. The Giants have big issues at bullpen and outfield that we could help. Need them to stay in the race, but with those issues still outstanding. I have my doubts though - Giants and Rangers were my flop picks for this year.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 10:43 PM) The jury's still far from out on Delmonico. Hayes, for that matter. That said, if he can't stick at 3rd, his chances go down quite a bit. Davidson as well. Each of these guys should be given an honest look. And why not? What else is there to do this season? Give Asche more pointless at bats? Drool over Todd Frazier?
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) I can guarantee that if Melky, Soto and Todd are better than replacement (and they should be) they will have value in July. Not a lot, but certainly would return like a B- prospect, especially if the Sox pay some freight. Stop worrying and enjoy the season. We can't lose really. If they suck, great, if they don't suck, that's cool too. They will have some value; but the best value is likely to be in A ball players, which I'd much prefer to stunted/low-ceiling AAA players*. And that's fine...the idea here is to build to contend yearly, and that requires a deep farm and low-minor players - something the Sox haven't shown much interest in over the years. *Sox already have a surplus of those...hopefully they can get them sorted out and a few turn out to be gems.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 08:07 PM) We're like the Baltimore Orioles before they finally got good again. So many older, lousy players. Can't get too upset about this. Pelfrey is the type of pitcher they signed to round out the rotation when they were contending. But this idea of "flipping him" is la-la land stuff. They'll have hard enough time moving players with pulse like Frazier, Melky, Jones, and Robertson.....he's even behind the que of Holland, Gonzales and Shields. I doubt they move 4 of those guys.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 3, 2017 -> 03:59 AM) Delvin Perez is five years away from bring MLB ready. I don't see the Cardinals as good fit in a trade That's okay. We're going for a steady stream of players. also, the Cards could probably use Robertson and Frazier. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 1, 2017 -> 11:39 PM) OK I know nothing about baseball. You tell me that the team I'm about to describe isn't a contender AFTER our trades. 1B-Abreu (star). 2B - Saladino (Moncada in May, star). SS - Anderson (budding star). 3B - Frazier (good defense; great power just like Abreu). When Moncada comes up, Saladino super infield sub. OF - Melky (serviceable); RF - Avi (still has a chance of excelling). CF - May (awful, maybe a free agent aquisition for outfield if our organization would fricking pay pay pay). DH - Coulda acquired one in offseason for $$. Catcher-Coulda signed a free agent to go with Narvaez for $$ Bullpen - Robertson closer (good). Setup guys - Hit or miss, coulda acquired one for $$ to add to the setup crew. Starters: Q, Rodon, Shields, Gonzalez, Holland. (Once one of the guys we got from the Nats is ready to fill in, not half bad). So how dumb am I? I contend our team could have been a contender this season even with the trades. Without the trades, even more a contender with Sale and Eaton. But it would have required spending a little bit of fricking cash for an outfielder, a DH and a catcher. Excuse me for thinking a big city team might wanna spend some cash in free agency. The team you propose plays .500 if everything goes right. More likely, it wins 75 games. The rotation has a 1, a 3 and 3 5s The mistake was NOT rebuilding during the Ventura era (actually they did, but only for 1 season then they stopped) and waiting so late to finally start (the unconscionable Shields trade was in June). But that's water under the bridge. The team needed to be rebuilt and they're finally getting around to it and they need to be thorough about it (and yes, they need to get on with moving more players as only 3 have been moved and they can't abort it midstream like they did last time).

Not that it matters, but what is the theory behind Cody Asche on the roster? 1200 PAs and .684 OPS. .298 OBP. Just that he hits left-handed?
-
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 30, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) For the Cardinals to pull a deal off they are realistically looking at having to trade 3 of their top 5 prospects, plus another top 15 organizational prospect at a minimum due to a lack of high end prospects I really do not see that happening Probably not; but position-wise it could work out. One of their top guys is a C, and they are signing Molina for several more years. Another I think is a CF, and they have Fowler. Q would look good there.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 30, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) With the Sox committing to the rebuild, and the system's lack of impact position player talent (outside of Moncada and Collins), it almost feels like this is a race the Sox need to win... Absolutely Sign him. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 09:10 PM) Ugh, this quote hurts: While I don't believe his stock has risen that much, it really sucks that we gave up our best amateur signing under Paddy for James f***ing Shields. Pretty evident that SD had better scouting reports on him than we did. He was our own player and we can't evaluate him properly! -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 28, 2017 -> 01:40 PM) A 31 year old with a velocity jump? Sounds suspicious to me. Unusual, but the Sox are due for some luck like that.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Mar 28, 2017 -> 04:39 PM) I dont get it some times. Why dont you guys look at the teams involved? Lets highlight the Pirates and Astros. Do you guys think they operate the same as the Nationals or the Red Sox? Look at the history of Dombrowski and Rizzo. It was the perfect storm for Sale. We may never get there with Q unfortunately and it's up to the Sox then if they want to drop value/ keep him. I'd rather keep him past next offseason if he's still here. You have two teams trying to trade for Q who love their prospects. Maybe it'll change at the deadline. Beyond that the Astros can spend money. The Pirates are content with doing nothing. Astros have traded a lot of prospects...that may be the problem. Pirates don't trade prospects, I agree.
