The Sox have plenty of guys already that they can work on flipping in July: the entire bullpen, Gonzalez, Lawrie, Melky, etc. Adding another guy will just be a distraction from the primary goal of figuring out which among the Saladinos, Tilsons etc are keepers going forward. They have a hard enough time making July trades as it is, and they should have an ample inventory should they decide to get serious in July trades this year.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
GreenSox replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
When the Sox acquired Frazier, he had 2 years left on his contract; now he has 1 year left. His control is 50% less, and there is no reason the Sox should expect anymore than 50% of what they gave up for him. Frazier had a bad year, including leading MLB in infield pop ups. And that was behind a miserable second half to 2015, which most willfully ignored. He will be 31 this season. Could he turn it around? Of course - there's a chance. But teams won't pay any sort of premium right now to see that happen. His value will be better in June or July if he has a good year...it's worth the risk to wait. Quintana, on the other hand, just delivered his fourth quality season. He's consistent as heck and it is his consistency that puts him in the top tier category, if not the ace. A fifth good year added on to four, doesn't really raise his value; and he's not going to suddenly start throwing 96 to get teams to pay for his "stuff." The greater risk is that he has an off year, and that will kill his value as his value is one of consistency and contract, not stuff. A seller's market will not exist this time next year. Quintana needs to be moved. -
Why? (ther than the fact that Hahn/Williams have a general affectation for high K slugger types) They areon't winning with or without this "slugger". Much more productive to give Avi his last hurrah.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) I bet that Yency Almonte for Kahnle trade last off-season is one Hahn wishes he had back. The Kahnle trade was pointless from the get-go (Sox had several Kahnles), with little to gain at the cost of an interesting low-level minor leaguer with upside. Shields trade was similarly nonsensical. Hahn should wish he had every trade from 2014-2015 back.

Where's Kahnle? Sox dump him?

I'm not sure where to put this, but i really enjoyed your Lechich piece- or his piece. (you're Future Sox, right?). his offspeed stuff looked pretty good in the youtubes I looked at.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 04:24 PM) If they're not trading Meadows then they HAVE to move McCutchen right? Because otherwise there simply isn't anywhere for Meadows to play this year, and whatever they do with Mccutchen fundamentally changes the names we could put on the list. It appears that they want to move McCutchen. But he's an extremely difficult player to value... terrible 2016 in his magic 30 year. I can't see a team risking trading a top prospect for him; and the Pirates, understandably, want one. I can see a team doing some volume with second tier prospects. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 03:23 PM) I personally don't think that offer is light at all. I just think Luhnow doesn't realize that in the modern MLB that you have to really go for it when you have a window and that sometimes means trading away quality prospects. Epstein most definitely overpaid for Chapman but it helped them get a ring. Can't be a major league GM and he afraid to make a move like that if you want to win a title. As of last summer, the only one of those guys that Law had ranked was Tucker at 32, so one can see why Law would think it light - based on his own evaluation. -

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 27, 2016 -> 02:26 PM) Me thinks Hahn/Cashman are using Twitter/National Writers as a way to stir the pot and/or put pressure on other teams. All of this stuff is intentional. Agree. Nightengale is a definitely a whitesox gawker. I think he'll end up in Houston for Martes, Tucker and someone other than Musgrove. But to me he is perfect for Pittsburgh. A team with limited payroll that can appreciate Q's contract; he's consistent and as "low risk" as possible re established upper tier pitchers; and Pitt consistently develops prospects, such that they are likely to recoup what they lose. -

Brett Gardner going back to the Pirates would make sense. Yanks get McCutchen Sox get Glasnow. Rutherford and Newman or someone Pirates get Q and Gardner Probably someone would have to throw some cash at Pirates. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 10:38 AM) I know we love Rutherford, and he would be an idea 2nd piece. Just wish we could make that first piece either Meadows or Torres or Frazier. He was pick #18 in last year's draft. That is not the value of a second piece, no matter how much the WhiteSox liked him 6 months ago. If the Pirates are actually willing to pay Glasnow plus Mcutchen plus Newman for Quintana, why bring the Yankees in? Take the deal and Hahn can spin-off McCuthen for more than Rutheford. That's the problem with Hahn 3-ways; when he brings in the 3rd team, it's the 3rd team that takes the surplus from what the other team was willing to overpay. He did it last year in the Frazier trade. -

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 09:18 AM) In my opinion, we desperately need young power hitting. Thoughts? Sox have needed that for the last decade. But this is tear down time, but hopefully we get one of those in the process. -

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 10:00 PM) I don't get why Pitt would want to trade Glasnow. He seems like on the verge and could be 1 or 2 starter talent. Because you can trade/ sign a 1/2 starter. Hitters of that caliber rarely get to the market until they are past their prime. Plus trading Glasgow creates equivalence- 6 years of maybe a 1/2 starter for 4 years of a 1/2 in his prime. -

QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 03:25 PM) To state the obvious, we really need to start drafting and developing better, especially when it comes to position players. It's always frustrating to see all these well-stocked farm systems and then we have to give up a Chris Sale or Jose Quintana just to catch up. Amen! -

I don't know that Tucker is untouchable. And if he is, move on. The objective evaluators certainly don't grade him out as untouchable skill. -
Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This isn't a good market to trade Abreu. Maybe next year will be - not sure which 1B/DH are up for FA, but several were this season. Melky looks like a deadline deal; if he has a good year, but get a bottom top 100 for him. If not, then a flier. But that's okay. I'd like to see someone pony up for Robertson and move him before the season to create more room for Jones and perhaps others who could be flipped. -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:56 AM) I'm on pirates.com message board and they're saying they need to make a trade for Q at all costs. One guy said trading Glasnow is ok because Q is in the rotation for almost as long as he would be but Meadows would be a tough loss. Same guy said if Meadows is in the deal, then they would be able to deal McCutchen over the next year or so with Bell could go back to LF with Marte in CF. Yes, just looking at twitter, the Pirates fans seem much more enthusiastic than the Yankees or Astros fans. The Astros may be tainted because they have traded a bunch of prospects over the past couple of seasons with less than stellar results. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:57 AM) You might want to re-read the Samardzija trade thread. Of course Trayce Thompson is a prospect you build a team around. And when he was Glasnow's age, an age where you say he should be ready for a rotation spot, he was hitting .229 in AA striking out at an alarming rate. He's one you keep, esp when you have no one else in CF. These non-elite prospects who can produce at league average levels would have certainly helped, perhaps allowing the Sox to spend the $17 million on a real player instead of Rollins, Justin Turner, etc. But the Sox got Dunn with a glove and a good attitude, so all is well. -
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:27 AM) Asking for Conforto lol. Always ask high, then negotiate. Kind of hard to value Conforto. One good year, one bad year. Decline in BABIP corresponds with increased K rate.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:31 AM) He has been too good for GreenSox. He likes mediocre guys. Glasnow is 22 has a 2.06 ERA in 500 minor league innings and struck out over 1 an inning during his brief call up. I want the Sox to get position players, but in decline, isn't ready for a rotation spot and should be at 22 is just so far against what he has posted about far lesser prospects. It has to be a joke. Now he isn't happy with prospects. Ooooh, Dick, got me again, right? Uh, that would be a no. I just don't like this prospect who is a member of the Pirates. Oh horrors! You will also note he dropped in BA's rankings as well. And to think only a year ago you (and others) were lecturing me from your high horse about the seminal, generational talents of Frazier and Samardzija. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 05:31 PM) What am I missing with Trevor Brown? I'll admit I know nothing about him, but I don't see much to like based on a quick google search. Seems like there are better prospects to target, perhaps a guy like Chris Shaw could work. Looks to be a decent catcher. Frazier will only bring a 2nd tier prospect or 2, Sox need a catcher (they can do without a decent 3B, CF or whatever else, but they need a catcher), so Frazier seems to me to be a decent asset to trade for a catcher.
