  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 01:23 PM) If you take BP seriously, they tell you Tim Anderson is never going to be a major league SS. The people doing the White Sox position player write ups this year were a bit cranky. They loved the pitchers, except not so much for Rodon. They did call Quintana perhaps the greatest 6 year minor league free agent signing of all time. They need to have a talk with their ex pat Law who says he could play major league SS right now defensively, if he hit 8th or 9th and the Sox basically gave up on his plate discipline ever developing.
  2. I certainly would wait. But the longer you wait the higher the price (if he produces, which he should do). Samardzija was a fly ball pitcher so I never understood the fit other than he was perceived as a grinder. Although he disappointed, he actually produced his normal WAR, with his career year of 2014, which the Sox bought off of, the aberration.
  3. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:53 PM) You would have rather traded Eaton than Thompson? Is that a joke? If Thompson is such a sure thing, then why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him for a piece they could use? I'll never understand why you hate Eaton so much yet love Avi so much. It makes no sense. I want to trade Eaton because he would bring far more in trade than Thompson (esp off of a career year). Also, Thompson would be a competent replacement (for sure he can handle it defensively) and would have addressed a big need: defense. I don't want to dump Avi because we would get zero for him. I don't hate Eaton nor love Avi. Trading only players you hate is "selling low", a philosophy I consistently reject. Why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him? Maybe they don't think that baseball ends in 2017 like you and KW do. Otherwise, I have no idea what their plans are for him. Let me ask you: Why did the Dodgers take Thompson/Montas/Johnson instead of Frazier??????? I didn't like out 73 win team making short term deals 2 years ago and I don't like this 76 win team (which, with pythag 72, may have been worse than the 73 win team) doing it either. If this were a legit 80-82 win team and then you make those deals? Yes it makes sense (the Frazier deal would; the Samardizja trade was inane on all levels).
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:36 PM) Avi Garcia has a completely different hitting profile than Josh Donaldson and he's unlikely to take another big step forward unless he finally learns some plate discipline (which is unlikely IMO). You may be right, but I hear that about every young player the Sox have when they don't produce big as rookies (and sometimes even when they do - Trayce "fourth outfielder" Thompson, e.g.).
  5. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:40 PM) Lawrie > Sanchez and trading Eaton would have been a terrible idea. Lawrie was a .6 WAR player; I think there's a reasonable chance Sanchez could well exceed that. But of course that's the crux of my disagreement with the philosophy of people on this board and the Sox FO. I'll take the chance with the young player over the proven veteran mediocrity. I had no objection to Lawrie though -the price was modest. Hopefully he'll do better.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) Samadjiza never said it though. No he didn't...saved the front office from itself.
  7. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:24 PM) Oh yeah? Which 3B? And now you have opened up a hole at CF. sounds like a real "creative" move. I don't know. Maybe Frazier if we threw in another prospect. (and yes, we would have had to bring in another team). Or maybe a better LF or RF. Thompson was no hole in CF. Try again.
  8. Avi's D is his D; but it wouldn't surprise me if he hits pretty well. The list of players who have finally developed at 26-28 is pretty stout (donaldson, e.g.). Avi takes walks and hits the other way; if you can do those things, which are hard, you should be able to do other things that would help and are actually easier for most players.
  9. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 04:56 PM) I still believe sox were better off with Sanchez there and upgrading the SS position. Been saying that all winter. They likely traded for him to play 3rd; then they work out a deal for Frazier. That trade, modest cost that it was, really was unnecessary once Frazier was here. (aside from obvious preference for veterans). Sox FO reacts with no real plan; they just aren't creative. I wanted to trade Eaton (to shore up 3rd or some other position) because I think we saw a career offensive year and his defense isn't good and the rest of our OF defense is bad. And we had a more than capable CF on the roster.
  10. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 09:56 PM) I think there's a real possibility both Olt and Davidson may find themselves in new organizations come April 1st. Both are out of minor league options. I think we could see some teams be willing to take a flyer on either of them if the star aligned correctly. Personally I think at least one of them is going to pass, but you never know... They can be sent down if they stay on the 40 right?
  11. I don't see Olt at all. He plays one position (and Saladino have Sanchez can play that position as well) and hasn't hit very well. I could see Sanchez as he showed improvement with the stick. But it would help to see him play other positions. I wonder if you can play the outfield some. I know he doesn't have the arm but he's reasonably athletic . The greatest need for that spot is someone who can hit a little bit as insurance/cover for Abby, Laroche, or Melky. In fact it looks to be like charlotte's going to have a logjam at third.
  12. QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 12:39 AM) interesting article on mlb trade about the break down on a jack. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/02/find...in-jackson.html per the article, i am looking at him in a different light. if the sox were, and i do not believe so, but if they were interested in him. i can see him as a 1 yr. however i can see his agent trying to get the max yrs for him. I can certainly understand Sox reluctance to signing him for any more than a year.
  13. Sanchez and Saladino played less than 1 year. Reasonable to believe that one or both would improve and it wouldn't have to be giagantic to be better players than Lawrie or Rollins. Lawrie made sense until they traded for Frazier. Is there an affirmative plan or just reactions. So I'd say that Rollins in 80%. Unless he has absolutely nothing in the tank or gets hurt, he's starting and Saladino is sitting. The White Sox way.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) It's not about walks -- he swings and makes contact with terrible pitches. His O-Swing% (46.6%) was worst on the team by more than eight percentage points, and third worst in the entire MLB (league average was 31.3%). This causes him to make bad contact, which is a significant contributor to his curiously low power numbers. Right, but that he has a good walk rate (relatively speaking) suggests that there is some skill there that perhaps can be developed. And, yes, he needs more power. Maybe he should pull the ball more - just a thought.
  15. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 03:23 PM) I am pretty sure Cleveland will feel it hurt them more even if they add Jackson. yes, you hate to see someone get hurt but this is actually good for the Sox. If they want Jackson, which I doubt, they can out maneuver Cleveland for him.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:32 AM) I wouldn't mind Reddick, even as a rental. Worst case scenario is that the Sox send a fringe prospect or two to the A's and get the compensation pick back next year when he leaves. Fringe prospect is the best case and highly unlikely with Hahn and Williams running the negotiations
  17. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:21 AM) Josh Reddick - free agent in 2017. The A's wont hesitate to move a guy before that FA year And Williams and Hahn are the perfect duet to take the bait
  18. QUOTE (Dunt @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:11 AM) Coghlan would've been a nice addition for virtually no cost Kind of explains why they didn't want Fowler; similar profile player. They must want yet another NL slugger. Look for cargo In July, which will cost an arm and a leg. Decent OBP and 16 homers out of the 2 hole certainly would help this team a lot. But goodness was the price low.
  19. I remember in the early days it was Einhorn and Reinsdorf, co billing May he rest in peace.
  20. QUOTE (hi8is @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Things that make ya go hummmmm Edit: does this new swing change his eyes so he doesn't swing at everything known to man? Check out his walk rate. Compare it to say, oh, the "professional hitter."
  21. QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 08:08 PM) but if he wasn't traded, he would be manning 2b. i wonder how he would have done there. I think caufield was being sardonic re the prolific apologetics re that ridiculous trade. And you're right, he was playing out of position.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 06:38 PM) And those young players KW gave up almost never amounted to anything at all. And I couldn't be less concerned about the prospects we gave up This summer. I'm not a mediocre young player lover like you You realize that Semien had nearly 3 times the WAR that Lawrie had, don't you? You realize that Semien had a higher OPS than Melky, don't you? You do realize that Phegley would have had the 3rd highest OPS on this team (behind Eaton and Abreu) don't you? How many playoff appearances has Kenny Williams delivered with his "proven veterans"? So don't lecture me about mediocrity, sonny.
  23. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 04:15 PM) Any offseason in which the Sox acquired basically an entire new infield to go along with their superstar 1b and one of the best 3B in all of baseball doesn't to me seem "frustrating". It is frustrating because this is the exact same approach Ken Williams has taken for years and it has repeatedly failed. He moves young players for veterans; but leaves significant holes, such that the team is a not real contender (without injuries the team is a marginal contender, as constructed). The org. remains outrageously insular and insider. He says he has a volkswagen budget. Well if that's your budget, you need to use the farm more, and he refuses to do that. And if they really couldn't afford the modest Fowler* salary, then they positively are going on the cheap and cutting the budget and they have to use the farm. *And yes I didn't them to sign Fowler because I'm hoping they can do gangbusters in the draft and because, frankly, I don't think this team contends with him anyway and because i think there's a decent chance Avi becomes competent and the alternative would have been to sell him for dimes on the dollar.
  24. Well if it's a budget thing, maybe the plan is to go pay a premium prospect price in July for a .5 or 1.5 year rent, paid for largely by Danks and Laroche coming off the books next year. Of course we'll need another starter and 2 catchers next year as well. By my count the budget is
  25. To answer your question, because AVi is a young player and the conventional wisdom is that the chances of a young player improving are less than the chances of an aging veteran not only stopping the decline, but reversing it. It's been the practice of this org for years, and we, well, see the results. That doesn't apply to pitchers, as long as the pitcher is Cooper-certified. They trust him.
