Spring training 3/8: brewers vs White Sox 2:05 start
GreenSox replied to Whisox05's topic in 2016 Season in Review
ST record is utterly meaningless. Last year, the ST record was bad...but the team and manager seemed bored with ST, so they probably didn't get the benefit out of it they should have. This year, there should be a lot to keep them busy. -
Big signing here. Last hole, and it was gaping, plugged: OF defense. It should be acceptable most nights.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 7, 2016 -> 07:09 AM) I'd much rather give LaRoche six weeks against RHP before writing him off, especially when the alternative is Garcia. I get Adam was terrible last year, but at least he's put up good offensive seasons before and as recently as 2014. The same can't be said for Avi and I'm not sure why some posters are eager to give him another 600 PAs in 2016. He needs to either force playing time or be the go-to guy once LaRoche/Melky fail or get hurt. He definitely should not be handed a starting job. Latest for Laroche was the first half of 2014. And he did nothing last year. No wants to give Avi 600 at bats, but he also isn't past his prime. Laroche on the bench with Avi/Melky leaves us without a late inning defensive outfielder. It's essentially 2 DHs. Now without Laroche one of these guys is going to have to learn to play some first. And of course they're going to have to do some intelligent platooning to maximize this roster

Spring Training 3/6 - White Sox vs. Padres 2:05 PM CST

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Mar 6, 2016 -> 11:55 AM) While Eaton's shoulder is recovering, I would much rather see May in CF over Fields, Sands or Shuck. May is a legit prospect and there's nothing wrong with him getting some extra playing time early in ST. Agree -

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 4, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) Shiiiiiit that means Turner was relying on the sieve defense. Risky business. Not if they were ground balls. hope to see more ground balls. Keeps the Pitch counts down -
Neither helps the OF defense a lick. 20 homers out of Cargo would be about par for the course. Pay a 40 homer price (probably a 50 homer price) and get 20 with bad defense.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Mar 4, 2016 -> 02:45 PM) Is John Danks for sure their 5th starter? I know it's early but if he continues to struggle & either Turner or Johnson step up, it seems stupid to let Danks round out the rotation. They've kept him there this long with less than exemplary results; don't see any reason why they'd change. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 08:52 PM) When the Sox signed Jimmy Rollins it was to be the starting SS. I agree. They use the minor-league contract so that they have an out in case he has absolutely nothing left, which is possible considering his age. But if he can play acceptably he's the man,for the last decade of this organization.

QUOTE (shipps @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 05:18 PM) Eh there kind of is considering there is no one else that guarantees us that they will play at least ML average level defense and hitting. Unfortunately. And that's my fundamental disagreement with the FO, field staff, and most on this board: if the vet can't play at least average (esp a 38 year old), play the young guy if there's one available. An exception might be made if it's your only hole, but it isn't.
-
Everyone know he's great in the clubhouse. But can he play SS at at least a ML average level (defense and hitting)? If not, there's not point in having him here.
-
QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 04:55 PM) That's a poor standard. Can't argue with that. I just don't think he deserves the beat down, considering the other offensive (and defensive) luminaries on this team.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 08:34 AM) And if you want to win, what kind of strategy is selling high? Should the Sox trade Sale, Abreu, Quintana? How will their trade value be any higher? Unless you like perpetual rebuilds, you build around good players. Eaton is a good player. So was Samardzija. Sure messed up the Cubs, didn't it. And the Sox sure showed them when they bought high on Samardzija. Selling high doesn't mean you sell every good player you have. But this team with its ongoing deficiencies needs to do some high-selling to get square, imo. Can't keep throwing ML Ready prospects at every mediocre veteran available. Some they threw at Oak last year are better players than the additions they made this year.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 09:09 AM) Where is this coming from??? Everybody, PLEASE STOP SAYING THIS. 6.0% walk rate last year. Sox as a team, 6.7%. MLB position players, 7.8%. 101st out of 141 qualified hitters in walk rate. By what standard are we honestly assessing that "Avi take walks?" By the standard that he had a higher walk rate than every starter except for Laroche and Eaton. It was the bench that pulled up the team walk rate. But indeed, when his rate is one of the starters' highest, that explains a lot.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 01:23 PM) If you take BP seriously, they tell you Tim Anderson is never going to be a major league SS. The people doing the White Sox position player write ups this year were a bit cranky. They loved the pitchers, except not so much for Rodon. They did call Quintana perhaps the greatest 6 year minor league free agent signing of all time. They need to have a talk with their ex pat Law who says he could play major league SS right now defensively, if he hit 8th or 9th and the Sox basically gave up on his plate discipline ever developing.
-
I certainly would wait. But the longer you wait the higher the price (if he produces, which he should do). Samardzija was a fly ball pitcher so I never understood the fit other than he was perceived as a grinder. Although he disappointed, he actually produced his normal WAR, with his career year of 2014, which the Sox bought off of, the aberration.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:53 PM) You would have rather traded Eaton than Thompson? Is that a joke? If Thompson is such a sure thing, then why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him for a piece they could use? I'll never understand why you hate Eaton so much yet love Avi so much. It makes no sense. I want to trade Eaton because he would bring far more in trade than Thompson (esp off of a career year). Also, Thompson would be a competent replacement (for sure he can handle it defensively) and would have addressed a big need: defense. I don't want to dump Avi because we would get zero for him. I don't hate Eaton nor love Avi. Trading only players you hate is "selling low", a philosophy I consistently reject. Why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him? Maybe they don't think that baseball ends in 2017 like you and KW do. Otherwise, I have no idea what their plans are for him. Let me ask you: Why did the Dodgers take Thompson/Montas/Johnson instead of Frazier??????? I didn't like out 73 win team making short term deals 2 years ago and I don't like this 76 win team (which, with pythag 72, may have been worse than the 73 win team) doing it either. If this were a legit 80-82 win team and then you make those deals? Yes it makes sense (the Frazier deal would; the Samardizja trade was inane on all levels).

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:36 PM) Avi Garcia has a completely different hitting profile than Josh Donaldson and he's unlikely to take another big step forward unless he finally learns some plate discipline (which is unlikely IMO). You may be right, but I hear that about every young player the Sox have when they don't produce big as rookies (and sometimes even when they do - Trayce "fourth outfielder" Thompson, e.g.).
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:40 PM) Lawrie > Sanchez and trading Eaton would have been a terrible idea. Lawrie was a .6 WAR player; I think there's a reasonable chance Sanchez could well exceed that. But of course that's the crux of my disagreement with the philosophy of people on this board and the Sox FO. I'll take the chance with the young player over the proven veteran mediocrity. I had no objection to Lawrie though -the price was modest. Hopefully he'll do better.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) Samadjiza never said it though. No he didn't...saved the front office from itself.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:24 PM) Oh yeah? Which 3B? And now you have opened up a hole at CF. sounds like a real "creative" move. I don't know. Maybe Frazier if we threw in another prospect. (and yes, we would have had to bring in another team). Or maybe a better LF or RF. Thompson was no hole in CF. Try again.
-
Avi's D is his D; but it wouldn't surprise me if he hits pretty well. The list of players who have finally developed at 26-28 is pretty stout (donaldson, e.g.). Avi takes walks and hits the other way; if you can do those things, which are hard, you should be able to do other things that would help and are actually easier for most players.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 04:56 PM) I still believe sox were better off with Sanchez there and upgrading the SS position. Been saying that all winter. They likely traded for him to play 3rd; then they work out a deal for Frazier. That trade, modest cost that it was, really was unnecessary once Frazier was here. (aside from obvious preference for veterans). Sox FO reacts with no real plan; they just aren't creative. I wanted to trade Eaton (to shore up 3rd or some other position) because I think we saw a career offensive year and his defense isn't good and the rest of our OF defense is bad. And we had a more than capable CF on the roster.

The battle for shortstop - applying some odds

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 09:56 PM) I think there's a real possibility both Olt and Davidson may find themselves in new organizations come April 1st. Both are out of minor league options. I think we could see some teams be willing to take a flyer on either of them if the star aligned correctly. Personally I think at least one of them is going to pass, but you never know... They can be sent down if they stay on the 40 right? -

I don't see Olt at all. He plays one position (and Saladino have Sanchez can play that position as well) and hasn't hit very well. I could see Sanchez as he showed improvement with the stick. But it would help to see him play other positions. I wonder if you can play the outfield some. I know he doesn't have the arm but he's reasonably athletic . The greatest need for that spot is someone who can hit a little bit as insurance/cover for Abby, Laroche, or Melky. In fact it looks to be like charlotte's going to have a logjam at third.
