QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 12:39 AM) interesting article on mlb trade about the break down on a jack. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/02/find...in-jackson.html per the article, i am looking at him in a different light. if the sox were, and i do not believe so, but if they were interested in him. i can see him as a 1 yr. however i can see his agent trying to get the max yrs for him. I can certainly understand Sox reluctance to signing him for any more than a year.

The battle for shortstop - applying some odds
GreenSox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sanchez and Saladino played less than 1 year. Reasonable to believe that one or both would improve and it wouldn't have to be giagantic to be better players than Lawrie or Rollins. Lawrie made sense until they traded for Frazier. Is there an affirmative plan or just reactions. So I'd say that Rollins in 80%. Unless he has absolutely nothing in the tank or gets hurt, he's starting and Saladino is sitting. The White Sox way. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) It's not about walks -- he swings and makes contact with terrible pitches. His O-Swing% (46.6%) was worst on the team by more than eight percentage points, and third worst in the entire MLB (league average was 31.3%). This causes him to make bad contact, which is a significant contributor to his curiously low power numbers. Right, but that he has a good walk rate (relatively speaking) suggests that there is some skill there that perhaps can be developed. And, yes, he needs more power. Maybe he should pull the ball more - just a thought.

QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 03:23 PM) I am pretty sure Cleveland will feel it hurt them more even if they add Jackson. yes, you hate to see someone get hurt but this is actually good for the Sox. If they want Jackson, which I doubt, they can out maneuver Cleveland for him.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:32 AM) I wouldn't mind Reddick, even as a rental. Worst case scenario is that the Sox send a fringe prospect or two to the A's and get the compensation pick back next year when he leaves. Fringe prospect is the best case and highly unlikely with Hahn and Williams running the negotiations
-
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:21 AM) Josh Reddick - free agent in 2017. The A's wont hesitate to move a guy before that FA year And Williams and Hahn are the perfect duet to take the bait

QUOTE (Dunt @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 11:11 AM) Coghlan would've been a nice addition for virtually no cost Kind of explains why they didn't want Fowler; similar profile player. They must want yet another NL slugger. Look for cargo In July, which will cost an arm and a leg. Decent OBP and 16 homers out of the 2 hole certainly would help this team a lot. But goodness was the price low.

I remember in the early days it was Einhorn and Reinsdorf, co billing May he rest in peace.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Things that make ya go hummmmm Edit: does this new swing change his eyes so he doesn't swing at everything known to man? Check out his walk rate. Compare it to say, oh, the "professional hitter."

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 08:08 PM) but if he wasn't traded, he would be manning 2b. i wonder how he would have done there. I think caufield was being sardonic re the prolific apologetics re that ridiculous trade. And you're right, he was playing out of position.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 06:38 PM) And those young players KW gave up almost never amounted to anything at all. And I couldn't be less concerned about the prospects we gave up This summer. I'm not a mediocre young player lover like you You realize that Semien had nearly 3 times the WAR that Lawrie had, don't you? You realize that Semien had a higher OPS than Melky, don't you? You do realize that Phegley would have had the 3rd highest OPS on this team (behind Eaton and Abreu) don't you? How many playoff appearances has Kenny Williams delivered with his "proven veterans"? So don't lecture me about mediocrity, sonny.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 24, 2016 -> 04:15 PM) Any offseason in which the Sox acquired basically an entire new infield to go along with their superstar 1b and one of the best 3B in all of baseball doesn't to me seem "frustrating". It is frustrating because this is the exact same approach Ken Williams has taken for years and it has repeatedly failed. He moves young players for veterans; but leaves significant holes, such that the team is a not real contender (without injuries the team is a marginal contender, as constructed). The org. remains outrageously insular and insider. He says he has a volkswagen budget. Well if that's your budget, you need to use the farm more, and he refuses to do that. And if they really couldn't afford the modest Fowler* salary, then they positively are going on the cheap and cutting the budget and they have to use the farm. *And yes I didn't them to sign Fowler because I'm hoping they can do gangbusters in the draft and because, frankly, I don't think this team contends with him anyway and because i think there's a decent chance Avi becomes competent and the alternative would have been to sell him for dimes on the dollar.
-
Well if it's a budget thing, maybe the plan is to go pay a premium prospect price in July for a .5 or 1.5 year rent, paid for largely by Danks and Laroche coming off the books next year. Of course we'll need another starter and 2 catchers next year as well. By my count the budget is
-
To answer your question, because AVi is a young player and the conventional wisdom is that the chances of a young player improving are less than the chances of an aging veteran not only stopping the decline, but reversing it. It's been the practice of this org for years, and we, well, see the results. That doesn't apply to pitchers, as long as the pitcher is Cooper-certified. They trust him.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Feb 23, 2016 -> 07:44 PM) I have thought Ethier is a pretty solid fit for most of the offseason. He's not a fit defensively.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2016 -> 10:18 AM) Dan Hayes @CSNHayes 6m6 minutes ago Tim Anderson is excited to work w/ Jimmy Rollins. Watched him all time. Said Rick Hahn spoke to him about taking advantage of opp. Implicit benefits like this are the best value I see from this, presuming Rollins is generous with his knowledge and time. He was a darn good SS for a long time. I guess Rollins could be good again...he only had 1 bad year, although it was last year and he was 37.
-
versus what, Dick? Bruce's OBPs of .281 and .291 the last 2 years playing in a NL bandbox? He hits like Chris Carter. I remember your response when I suggested the Sox pick him up ( at 1/6 of the salary and zero acquisition cost). Yea, Saunders got hurt in 2014. He hit well before the injury and he hit well the month after the injury. But by all means, let 36 ABs in 2015 trump that.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 11:25 PM) IMO, Rollins is in the drivers seat. By a mile. The preference toward veterans + Saladino can cover more positions skillfully as a utility infielder than Sanchez.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 23, 2016 -> 08:53 AM) I don't want Bruce, but exactly how would he be buying high? It is pretty funny you would like Saunders in a post you complain about OBP considering his career OBP is .301. I've come to the conclusion you like players based on salary. The lower the better. JR might have is eye on you. 2012 - .306 2013 - .323 2014- .341 2015 - injured Notice the trend? Come on, even you can see it. And on an AL team that played in a pitchers' park (v. an NL bandbox) as well. Young players do improve. And believe me, I know it goes against the conventional wisdom on here and in the Sox org. to suggest that. Love of decliners is a security blanket. "Don't blame us; we picked up a player who was good once. Who could have known he was out of gas? Not our fault." So much easier than giving young players a chance and risking they fail. And bad veterans has been such a bountiful strategy.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 23, 2016 -> 09:09 AM) Frazier and Lawrie aren't bad defenders though. Not as good as Sanchez and Saladino but I'll take the slightly worse defense for way better offense. The bad defense isn't why the White Sox were horrible last year. It was having an all time bad offense. That's true. But the idea is not to be "not bad" but to be good. And the failure to upgrade the OF defense (and actually downgraded it as they had a good defender there for a month) could prevent to the Sox from being good. And that's why I like the idea of Jackson. He will improve the OF defense and I think that if they use him appropriately they could get enough out of him offensively.
-
Bruce is a marginal upgrade from AVI IF both repeat their last 2 seasons. Bruce hasn't had an OBP over .300 in the last 2 years. How much more of that kind of hitting do the Sox need? Bruce is worth a middle reliever, I guess. But that's about it. People constantly want to sell low and buy high, which is what dumping Avi would be. Much rather the Saunders side of that deal anyway, if he were healthy.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 05:55 PM) Everyone would have us as the favorite with Upton in the outfield. That said, we were the big winners last year at this point, too. More than likely, the 2014-15 offseason and the repercussions of carrying Danks, Cabrera and LaRoche has forced the front office into a more "year by year," risk-averse position. I guess, but Danks and Laroche are off the books after this year, and Melky after next year. In the realm of leverage risks, that's pretty darn light.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 08:46 AM) The few players who fit that description likely aren't available. The closest/easiest thing you'll find to that is JB Shuck. Shuck is a 4th/5th OF, defensive replacement, once a week starter type. He just doesn't hit well enough against either side pitching to use as a platooner. It wouldn't surprise me to see Avi get to the .730 OPS range this season. He still has a pretty good walk rate (esp for this organization) and that might help him stabilize this year some. Still don't know why he gets beat on so badly (esp considering the $42 mill "professional hitter" was almost as bad).

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 02:17 AM) i don't mean to jump in here, but for me, the signing is to reinforce the idea of making a trade in the future with a pen pitchers being included in a pkg or maybe insurance for the pen. Of course you can jump in - it's a message board. The thing about a trade is that you can't trade until you're sure you have the replacement "fixed". And even then, you won't know they are fixed for sure until they see, say a month of pitching in the regular season. And the Sox have no one in the pen particularly valuable who is tradeable. What would, say, Jennings bring if we had a replacement for him? I don't buy the trade thing...Sox just don't think that far ahead and rarely have the guts to pull the trigger on dumping a starter on the major league roster.
-
Rollins had a .2 WAR last year. Saladino had a .2 WAR last year. But suddenly the SS hole is filled. But by all means, let's go with the 37 year old, instead of the 2nd year player. He's "proven".
