QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) a .772 OPS and 23 HR as a 23 year old in center field. If you think he's the guy he was last year, then EJ is an appropriate price offer. If you think he can develop and build on that 23 year old season, then you offer up a possible top rotation guy for him. That .772 OPS was also with high K and a low OBP. See nothing to suggest that he's the position player equivalent of top of the rotation.

.691 OPS, with high K and low OBP.....for a #1 starter. How about for E Johnson...maybe

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 02:35 PM) Often injured and huge home and away splits his entire career. Last year he was .243/.294/.464 on the road. His road OPS for his career is over 200 points less than it is at home. If you don't like Cespedes' OBP, you aren't going to like GarGo's. No reason to give up top prospects for him when alternatives cost just money. If they want Anderson or Fulmer or Q, just hang up the phone. They are going nowhere anyway. Exactly (plus hang up the phone with Adams as well).

Trade the farm for him. Better than making JR go 5 years. The Sox are just a Cargo away.
-
If the Sox are going to wait as Merkin suggests, then I hope they go ahead and grab Jackson ASAP.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) Good point, I take back my "hell no" and say "probably not" Doesn't the CBA expire after this season? Or maybe its 2017. Anyway, when it's done, the first change will be the end of the QO tie to free agency (although they could keep the "gain a draft pick" part; but they'll for sure end the "lose the draft pick" side).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 03:03 PM) Not a bad plan. Really struggled hitting with Seattle, but that isn't unique. He's 29. Have him play CF, move Eaton to RF. He's usually been close to a 3 WAR player. Might be able to sign him for a song. I would guess they are still in on Cespedes and Upton, but a guy like Jackson, while not the sexy move, could turn out to be a good one. Signing a beat up Jermaine Dye didn't excite the fanbase, but he earned his money and then some. Dick, I like your plan.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 11:58 AM) I think Cespedes is a bad fit for the Giants, and a quick look at their message boards/forums has their fans thinking the same thing, they all seem to prefer Fowler (though that obviously doesn't mean anything for the FO). I can see that. Look at their lineup - they have no holes, except for CF. On the other hand, I doubt their anxious to give up a draft choice. Their farm doesn't get much Keith Law love, but certainly churns out some high-end talent.

RHP, are we set or are we missing opportunities?

QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 11:47 AM) Hope they go for 2 modest OF upgrades, assuming neither YO or JU comes to town. Agree -
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 25, 2015 -> 12:39 PM) Take it for what's its worth but according to MLBTR this is the latest comp round picks after the Murphy signing. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/upda...raft-order.html COMPENSATION ROUND (bonus picks given to teams who issued qualifying offers to players who signed elsewhere; picks are allotted in inverse order of 2015 record) 27. White Sox (for Jeff Samardzija signing with the Giants) 28. Nationals (for Jordan Zimmermann signing with the Tigers) 29. Mets (for Daniel Murphy signing with the Nationals) 30. Dodgers (for Zack Greinke signing with the Diamondbacks) 31. Cardinals (for John Lackey signing with the Cubs) 32. Cardinals (for Jason Heyward signing with the Cubs) And the Cards get one of those bogus "market comp" picks too I think. There's your "cardinal way."

They probably figure Scott Carroll can do what those guys do and they're probably right. They signed somebody else, name escapes, who may be able to start as well. The O WAR corner OF is a more imminent issue, even if they have to go on the cheap for more modest upgrades. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 11:03 AM) That player will probably be instantly our 4th best prospect, by a long shot, behind some combination of Fulmer, Anderson, and the 10th pick. Yep.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 11:00 AM) Maybe he is just better than what they had last year. By your comment, I assume you believe that Cabrera has no chance to improve this year? He could. So could Avi. So could Laroche But that's no better than 50/50. But look at the sox run differential from last year - 72 phytho wins. If anything, the win total exceeded the sum of the parts. A lot would have to improve for this team as is to contend. You cant' trade controllable young talent like they did for a wish and a hope in Melky Cabrera (aging with a history of PED use) and a couple of others.
-
Not improving the 0 WAR LF and RF makes the Frazier trade absolute madness. This is where hero-worshiping comes in. Frazier's here, not because the Sox will win, but to have a home run hitter to watch. Might as well get full hero value and let him participate in home run derby this year, if that's the plan.
-
you can get Austin Jackson without giving up the draft choice for that job.
-
If NOT Cespedes or Upton, can we land 2 tier two guys?
GreenSox replied to blackmooncreeping's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Parra and Jackson aren't marginal if platooned. At the very least I would bother getting one of them. They won't cost that much. Doesn't seem to be any market for Jackson - he could be one of those 1 year contract guys. The OF could use the defensive help. Can't go into another year with negative WAR in LF and RF. July deals come at a premium for 2 months of production. And with the team set up, the Sox will likely be .500ish and in that "Tweener" position, which is no place to be. I wouldn't waste a draft choice on Desmond or Fowler (yikes!) -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 04:38 PM) If you have a 3 war player, you do not need to upgrade them. If you have three 1.5 WAR players...you have 3 players you'd be looking to upgrade to stars. You would have the worlds most deep 74 win team, though. That's true except that for want of 1 YEAR of a 3 War player they ended up with 0 WAR at multiple positions, when they could have had 1-2 WAR at multiple positions. Frazier deal will be fine IF a)He plays like he's supposed to and b)the Sox firm up LF and RF and DH. But Frazier with 0 WAR in those spots again is counterproductive.
-
Just because the Sox are in "win now" doesn't mean they can't win later. Other things should be set up in 2 years. keeping that 3rd pick will help that. Now if they do something like chase Cargo instead of signing a FA, then it likely will mean the window isn't flexible. I think there are other ways to get better besides Cespedes. But that will take creativity which I don't think is in the DNA of this FO or field management (but this board seems to disagree, so we'll see).

QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 10:18 AM) I really hope today's Gordon signing means things start moving the Sox way re: Cespedes, but in case they don't, can the Sox bring in 2 of 2nd tier OFs? Say they sign both Span and Parra, drop Parra in RF and Span in LF, and move Melky to DH. Figure out the Avi/Laroche thing later. Or do you sign one 2nd tier OF and go after a starting RHP? If they do that, I would include Jackson, who can rip lefties and plays good D. I might try to pick him up anyway. Nor would I be so quick to dispatch Avi. Give him AAA time, but selling low never got anyone anywhere. -
Sox need to get this done. I didn't like the Frazier trade in concept or execution. But given that they made the deal for 2 years of Frazier, they've got to top it off with another big hitter to make a real swing at the playoffs.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) Montas, Thompson and Micah are not assured to exceed that. Each has an elite tool: Montas - fastball, Thompson - defense, Micah - speed. Each has a crippling flaw: Montas - third pitch, Thompson - contact, Micah - defense. I'd love to see all three succeed, as well as Frazier, because it helps the Sox farm system reputation and by all accounts they're pretty great guys. Semien, Phegley and Bassit were almost 5 WAR. So, yes, I'm confident that those 3, who are better prospects, will as well. I realize that 5 war divided by 3 separate players doesn't equal 1 5 WAR player, but for 2 years in a row we cleaned out several of our top 10 prospects. Last year it was for a complete bust (and at best it would have been for a 1 year player) and this year let's hope we get Donaldson like production from Frazier. And before I hear how mediocre Semien et al are, they were all better than many of the scrubs the sox ran out there last year. And, indeed, if 3 WAR/Alexei is what anderson is, I would prefer moving him over what we moved for Frazier.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 01:52 PM) Yeah, it will be BS if Ortiz gets in, and the others don't. I do want to see consistency. PEDs or not, there's little justification for Ortiz in the Hall and E Martinez not, not to mention not being able to garner even 50%.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 02:00 PM) Look at the batted ball section. Got it.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 01:29 PM) Not seeing where this figure is, I still see 31% for his career, and even this year where he only pitched 19 innings his FB% was 40.5%, nowhere close to 52.4%. It says total GB % 47.6%. Where do you see 31% and 40.5% http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...&position=P

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 5, 2016 -> 01:04 PM) Jones' career FB% is 31%, that's not very concerning. 52.4%, however, is. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...&position=P
