QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 06:03 PM) The White Sox seem to be waiting until the last minute to announce what they are going to do with Alexei. Makes me think they either trying to get him to sign a lesser contract. It is at least worth a shot. Just let him go. He's an aging, declining player, and makes too many mental errors. Why they want to hang onto him like he's special is mind boggling, except that the sox are a ridiculously sentimental and hero-worshiping organization. Sox need a culture change.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 3, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) Trade SP Erik Johnson, RF Avail Garcia, 3B Trey Michalczewski, OF Courtney Hawkins, and SP Tyler Danish to the Reds for 3B Todd Fraizer and SP Nick Howard Trade OF Trayce Thompson and 2B Micah Johnson to the Padres for C Derek Norris not to be flip, but the suggested massive overpays and chasing heroes is exactly what the Sox should NOT do. Norris is essentially Phegley from the different side of the plate. Todd Frazier had an OPS of c .650 in the 2nd half. His home/road splits are gigantic as well. He's the precise type player that the Sox should avoid. Plus, the price you suggest paying is what an elite player would command. Under no method of analysis is Todd Frazier an elite player. In the end, the Sox still have a poor defensive team, with a substantially weakened farm, and filled 2 holes with okay, not great, players. Not a contender. Upton is a good player, but not a great player. Pass on 7/140. Defense, bullpen, young players is the ticket. Sox need to add young talent, not dump it for over-rated heroes. Go after FAs when the foundation is set.

The real problem with the Cubs/Sox trade proposals is that the Cubs don't have what the Sox need. Sox need an athletic defensive outfielder, young C and 3B. The Cubs have none of the above to trade. Oh sure the Sox could use a DH. But in this day and age, you need one who has a position. And the Cubs aren't trading Schwarber anyway.

QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 2, 2015 -> 01:41 PM) I dont think anyone is arguing that. The point I'm making is I think they'll have to go pretty far down the list because of the position they have put themselves in with Robin's status. Agree. It's ridiculous they way that they handled this.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 2, 2015 -> 04:12 PM) Certainly possible. To be honest, I'd rather have Alexei at 2/3 the cost of Desmond. I'd rather have Saladino at 1/20th of the cost of either.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 2, 2015 -> 02:41 PM) Didnt want him before, want him even less now yep

Alex Anthopoulos quits as Jays GM after turning down extension

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 11:31 AM) Well, he would be in the same exact position with Shapiro as KW with Hahn. Feels he's earned more respect and freedom than that level of oversight. That's probably right. Maybe even worse. There are those who say that Hahn is making baseball decisions. Frankly, I'm disappointed that Shapiro is leaving the Central. Tribe weren't exactly ominous during his stint. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 09:21 AM) We can make excuses for a lot of things, but over 7 minor league seasons he hit .241 with a .319 OBP. He may be the rare guy that does better in the majors than the minors, but the odds are against it. No reason not to find out. It's not like he hit .660 OPS and we're saying "he's young and could improve." If the Sox won't play a young player who raked like he did AND is far better defensively than anyone in the OF, when will they go into a season confident with a young player?
-
Lucroy Build the organization, please. Get solid at 3B, SS, 2B, LF, RF, bench, set up man in pen, and then talk about throwing prospects at heroes. As for Fowler. Do people really want to weaken this atrocious OF defense even further? File him in the same Cubbie hype file in which "Starlin CAstro was great in 2015" resides.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 12:10 PM) By all accounts, Desmond had an atrocious season last year for a guy coming off 3 straight 4+ win seasons. He failed to reach the 20/20 club for the first time since 2011 and was a butcher with the glove. I still think the Nationals might offer a QO to him, but does anybody think he is one of the best bounce back candidates of this FA class? His second half line bounced back quite a bit to the tune of .262/.331/.446 which is above average production from the SS spot. There is a great deal of risk involved in a long term contract with him, but if he could be had for $14-15 MM a year over 4 years, I think it's something the Sox should contemplate. That would give you the ability to slide Anderson to 2nd or move Desmond to DH if his glove continues to slide. If he gets a QO, he's not a buy low candidate. But, yes, if the price really were low, take him. Sox have no business throwing away draft choices like they did last year.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 11:43 PM) Olt is a young 27. Are we all OK with letting him start next year and see what we've got? Remember, Gillaspie was a starter for the Sox for a year and change ... Is it Olt time considering those 2 mammoth blasts he hit last September? It wouldn't be my preference. But then again, I don't want the Sox "going for it". I want them to continue to build by making savvy deals wherever they may lie, without pressing to "fill a hole" (because the Sox have about 6 holes by my count). So if that leaves us short a 3B again, so be it.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 09:57 AM) Engel is really coming into his own, esp since June and July.... however being moved to 3b..... i hope he develops more power. Where is the "moved to 3B" coming from?

Justin Morneau or another year of LaRoche

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 08:38 PM) Morneau option not picked up. What do you think? Always killed it in our park Neither. Sox need to get more versatile. Fewer dead veterans needed as well. -
Sox to hire Greg Sparks as Ast Hitting coach
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 10:43 AM) Well, the majority of the fan base likes Steverson for whatever reason, sooooo..... Only because he's a non insider. As have hoodwinked Hahn and Williams for over a decade so see if this is any different. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 27, 2015 -> 08:09 AM) He's got plenty of arm for any OF slot. But his strong skills in routes, speed and glove work mean his value is highest in CF. Yes!

QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Oct 25, 2015 -> 01:20 PM) Any of these make sense? http://chicagostylesports.com/2015/10/25/c...series-in-2016/ Some might, but not the one for the White Sox. Not a single elite prospect in the bunch. And of course, Starlin Castro, who has about zero trade value.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 25, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) You aren't getting Russell, Baez, Schwarber, or Bryant if you offer Q. their guys still in the minors, Soler, and Castro are their trade pieces.. Then they won't get much in trade. Castro has very little trade value. Teams aren't exactly lining up for .667 OPS at a bargain price of $40 million. I think they'd trade Schwarber...all that talk about him playing C is just that...to up his value. He has no position.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2015 -> 01:54 PM) Based on the fact he is 22 and they think he is going to be a stud. When he was 21 he was considered one of the top 5 prospects in the game. If the Sox want Cubs prospects who played this year, Castro is the guy they would dump, maybe Soler. It is just fantasy to think the Sox could get Schwarber or Baez. Maybe if they traded Sale. You can tell me I am wrong, but when you see the Cubs 2016 roster you will see I was right. What Cubs prospect is named Castro? Starlin? He's no prospect. Soler is terrible on D - he'd fit right in here. YOu may be right, based on what they say. But I also know that both Theo and Maddon are in PR mode 24/7, and they hype their players incessantly. (one would have thought that Castro had an excellent year, listening to those 2). There is a further purpose for hype beyond PR.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Oct 25, 2015 -> 09:50 AM) This is sort of off-topic, but I don't understand why everyone likes Tyler Danish so much. He's only 21, so he's very young, but he put up a 4.50 ERA last year in AA. That's not very impressive to me. I see him as a future bullpen arm, if that. He took a step back last year, but he's awfully young and still has a good chance to turn into an effective reliever. And one of the common threads of success in this era, aside from YOUNG talent, is a bullpen with 3 or 4 high end relievers.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 24, 2015 -> 05:30 PM) Just to entertain the Sox/cubs trade idea. I wonder if something like Erik Johnson for Villanueva/Castro would be close? Sox could decline Alexei's option and go after a FA pitcher like Latos or preferably Iwakuma. I'm not really a fan of Castro but his contract is relatively cheap and he is only 25 so there's still hope for his bat and him developing into a decent SS or 2BB. Not sure the cubs would be interested in EJ though. Castro sported an OPS of .667 this year and is basically owed $40 million over the next 4 years. Sox already have several middle infield guys who struggle with the bat. We want to trade a promising young pitcher for that? Honestly....
-
Frazier had a second half OPS of .664. His home/road splits are large He has 2 years left on his deal. Bring on the hero-worship. But I'll pass Build with young talent, please, like most of the winning organizations.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) Very few teams get much hitting out of the C and SS positions. Sox need to upgrade at least two out of 2B, 3B, DH and RF. And LF, which is really a bigger problem than RF since the bad player in LF is immovable thanks to the love of declining veterans. (and, of course, the CW hereon that Melky is a good player and Avi is terrible is just daft). And to contend, 4/5 will need to be upgraded. Of course, more declining veterans may be the fix Hahn and Williams seek to upgrade these positions.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 03:45 PM) Catching is such a weak position across MLB. Our catching situation shouldn't be one of our top two concerns. I agree. Usually, although there are exceptions, you can upgrade 2 positions for the cost of a catcher. Sox need upgrades at 2b, SS, 3b, LF, RF. Wouldn't worry so much about catcher.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 07:31 AM) Yesterday on the Boers and Bernstein Show, they briefly talked about the White Sox. Terry Boers said something to the effect of " The one guy that I know is available is Eaton". Bernstein was then excited and thought that was a good idea to free up CF for Trayce. This seems like an awful idea. Eaton has 6.6 fWAR over the last 2 seasons, is fairly cheap, and 26 years old. Unless he's a locker room problem, that's not a guy that a team in the White Sox position should move. Thoughts? It's an excellent idea to sell high on Eaton, especially with Trayce, the superior defender, in tow.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 04:48 PM) Not hard to see why his bottom line is miserable, all of his teams have been f***ing terrible. I'm actually surprised he managed to win 80 games with one of them. Fair enough, but you could produce similar statistics for Ventura re offense and defense and see why his bottom line is miserable. I'm looking for a reason to believe he's a good manager, beyond his use of analytics.
