Do they still have the Saturday afternoon show with Cooper?
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 27, 2016 -> 07:21 PM) Would you say they are similar types of players? Mitchell was a college player who was still high-school raw. He was spending half his time playing football. That was the problem with that pick.

Aside from the fact and reality that these trades for sluggers rarely work, and usually are terrible, there is also this reality with the Sox roster. We lose 2 starters, 2 catchers and our CF after this year. We lose our 2B and 3B after next year. And those won't be easy to fill. It will only be harder if you waste scarce pieces on another 1/2 or 1.5 year player.

Petricka and Putnam have the stones to close. Jones certainly has the stuff to close; but he really hasn't done it. Also, what are the plans for Sanchez?

So let's talk about the real change this year...

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2016 -> 04:57 PM) Frazier's clearly better, Rollins/Saladino a slight upgrade over Alexei last year, Lawrie's been better than expected (although still perhaps a notch below Sanchez, still much better than Micah, who pulled down overall positional numbers), Abreu's been mostly a non-issue (Sands has gotten more attention)....then we can argue pitch framing and Flowers vs. the veterans we have now, but at least both those guys tend to be stronger leaders, which is what we've been lacking in that clubhouse (of course, it's harder to be a leader if you're not playing well or hurt). I haven't seen a drop of in our pitching due to the loss of Flowers' pitch-framing; and I was tired of looking at him, so I'm good with the change. Yes, the big improvement is Eaton>>>>>>>>Avi and Jackson>>>>> Eaton -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2016 -> 04:56 PM) With a first pick at #10, it is much harder to pull off a underslot signing that adds something meaningful to use later. Last year the #10 pick was a $3.2 million slot. What can you realistically save there without a pretty big overdraft? That is much easier in the top few slots to do, where you have a lot more slot value to worth with. IMO the only way this really would work is if there was an injured SP falling, who was willing to sign underslot, or was such a value at your slot price that he was worth the chance. It would be difficult, and you're probably right. Best to just draft best player available. But,please, no reaches

QUOTE (daggins @ Apr 27, 2016 -> 04:44 PM) The Stros should bounce back, but if they don't Rasmus is the guy i'm looking at. I kind of wanted him this offseason before he took the QO. Well right now they essentially have 3 or 4 #5 starters in the rotation, so it won't be easy. I see Devenski, a pitcher in KW's ill-advised trade for Brett Myers, is entering their rotation. He could help. Reddick would probably be a good platoon hitter for the Sox, although I see little reason to believe that the As won't be in the West race...no one looks better than 85-88 wins in that division. Hard to trust Rasmus. Anyway, those type of trades usually don't help. But when something repeatedly fails, it's best to keep doing it.

I have no player preferences, just parameters. 1)No relievers in the first 10 rounds; that is clown drafting. Starters can be turned into relievers if secondaries don't develop. 2) No reaches paid full slot. 3)with 3 picks in the first 50 or so, do try to use one of those under-slot, to get another top talent to pay over-slot.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Apr 27, 2016 -> 01:33 PM) Make Atlanta an offer they couldnt refuse for Freddie Freeman Why would the Sox want to do that? 120 mill encumbrance for a 20ish HR guy. Just get Markakis for salary relief. Astros, after several years of hard work evaluating, drafting, and developing, are moving backwards, abetted by seriously dinging their farm system for "elite" level talent like Carlos Gomez (and others).

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 11:06 PM) 8-4 Angels. Royals showing some cracks. They may finally have lost the ability to cover their mediocre rotation. Adding a meatball pitcher like Soria as a key piece to their pen made it even more problematic.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 09:20 PM) Sox play the Royals 10 games from May 20 to June 12. Yep We'll have to look them in the face and beat them down. Go Avi! Just get over .700 OPS.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 04:54 PM) AJ will be available in another month. Mark He's the last thing this team needs.

Miguel Gonzalez getting called up, Danks skipped
GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Gonzalez basically sucked, but he actually threw some good pitches and got some key outs - could have been worse. I'd give him another chance -
4 pitches sounds like they'd give him every chance to start.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 09:14 AM) With the Sox, what I've been told is, they usually dictate the top 3 players in the lineup. The manager then has discretion on how to order the others. I am sure that is not a hard and fast rule, more a "this is usually what we do" thing. Jacob May has been hitting 9th, despite being a real prospect, for example. I think that's being done because he's very challenged at AAA and they want to bring him a long with less pressure. It depends on the case of course. I was really thinking about not being in the lineup at all. For example, Leonards (2014 pick) rarely plays for the DAsh, but an org. guy plays every day.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) Since Gonzalez has no options left? Anyone think he or Danks will be sent to the bullpen for long relief and send Petricka or Putnam down? Certainly hope not. I was worried about those 2 a couple of weeks ago, but they've settled down. Jennings has out-pitched Danks as well. If Gonzalez takes the #5 role, the Sox may keep Danks on the 25 as a legacy, but it would really be a waste of a spot. Now is not the time to experiment with him and see if he can pitch in relief. -
No And don't need to clear out the farm for a slugger either. Need an on base guy. Our 3-5 are excellent.

GreenSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Defense has been the biggest improvement. Latos in and Noesi out has been a nice upgrade as well. Danks is a sunk cost. He gets paid whether he pitches or weeds his garden. But I doubt they'll let him weed his garden, so he's going to take up a spot on the 25 man. Hope Gonzales pitches well. -
QUOTE (ron883 @ Apr 24, 2016 -> 04:09 PM) Hearing Jason next to Stone has been a joy. Hawk just keeps getting worse and worse. It is nice hearing a color guy that can actually provide some solid input. I can't wait for Hawk to retire. What have you guys thought of Jason so far? I've enjoyed Jason's work as well.
-
Don't look now, but Sands has a .754 OPS.
-
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Apr 24, 2016 -> 10:47 AM) They're gonna keep Erik Johnson around today in case Latos gets murdered (Texas was scoring like 7 runs a game until they came to Chicago) and call up Gonzalez the instant the game ends. I'd almost guarantee it. The question I have is whether this is a spot start for Gonzalez to alleviate the wear and tear from 19 straight game, or the first step in the The End of John Danks. Maybe both. If that's the theory, then they need to leave him up because Toronto and Baltimore have a more imposing lineup than Texas, despite early season stats. And if anyone will need some long-reliever backup, it's Gonzalez. As frustrating as Danks is, it's unlikely Sox have a better 5th starter option than Danks, unless EJ gets his act together. And at least the Sox only need him as #5, in contrast to the last few years.

4/24 Game thread: Texas, 1:10pm, CSN
GreenSox replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in 2016 Season in Review
Let's get the sweep. Playing some big swatters on the road next week and we need the cushion. -
Well they cut Brantley, even though there was no roster crunch, so I assume Smith can at least catch and throw it respectably. Avila shouldn't be out too long.
-
Matt Cooper still looks interesting to me. I guess he's old for A ball, but after pitching only in relief his first 2 years in the org (and striking out a ton), he's now in the rotation and still striking out a lot of batters.
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 24, 2016 -> 09:32 AM) Sure Avi needs to go but if you guys want a LH MOTO producer, there are none in sight that won't cause us to gut the Sox farm. CarGo and Bruce? Yeah those guys would probably be excellent additions but how do you obtain them? Most likely it'll be before the deadline and it's going to cost an arm (literally) and a leg. That's true. There is an undying yearn for yet another NL slugger. And of course that's Kenny Williams' M.O., despite the consistently dubious results. But just a guy who can get on base would help immensely for the 1/2 hole (Eaton would be sensational at 2 if they could find a 1). Getting men on base is what this team really lacks. And that wouldn't cost much. The Ranger reliever couldn't throw strikes and some of our guys still wanted to hack at it instead of taking the walk.
