Sox got back almost nothing from break up of 2012 squad
GreenSox replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sox didn't have much to trade. Peavy was really it. Perhaps we sold light with Rios. Astros got very little from their breakup, and they had a lot more to trade than the Sox did, including an in his prime Hunter Pence. They seem to have made out okay. The Cubs, however, did phenomenally well. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 8, 2015 -> 04:35 PM) I don't see Montas helping the Sox in '16 either, especially as a starter. I think he could definitely help in the pen. Like to see him start for another year though.

The Cubs got a lot from the sell-offs. But the Astros got very little from theirs. But the Astros drafted like maniacs. A ton of depth and not just from the top picks. Both of those teams have far more major league depth than the Sox. Part of that is that they know how to utilize limited and imperfect players.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:06 AM) I'd be careful saying Thompson is "much better defensively", this early in his career, as a CF. Also, trading Eaton is removing one of the only two positives in the lineup this year, really. Trading him for Thompson will be a significant overall downgrade, probably. Thompson makes a lot more sense to replace Avisail than Eaton. Well, it's not like I suggested giving Eaton away. Bring a 3B and/or C in for him. How then are the Sox going to get better? You have to trade something to get something. I think Trayce is miles better than Eaton defensively (a lot of that is because Eaton isn't particularly good defensively). I also don't know why people are so down on Avisail, yet say nothing about Melky. Huge age differential, salary differential. Both are poor defensively (although Avi had more assists). While Melky out-hit Avi, he still was below par offensively.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 09:47 AM) The person suggesting trading Eaton, ripped Ventura for playing him, saying he's not as good as his numbers. Now , trading him is supposed to net a 3B and a catcher. That's living in fantasyland. Wrong. I ripped him for not sitting him in September and letting Trayce play - although I didn't really rip on that. I ripped far more on playing the "elite" Melky Cabrera day after day. Never said Eaton couldn't produce. He hit c. .857 OPS after his first month. That will bring value. Which should be the idea. Although some prefer idols. But don't worry. Eaton will be back. Far greater chance of Trayce being packaged for a declining veteran than for EAton being traded for young talent.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 05:40 PM) Trade Danks to Dodgers for Van Slyke and a low level minor leaguer Trade Micah, Beck, Avi, and Danish for Todd Frazier and JJ Hoover That would be a steal for Van Slyke. I fully expect some major hero worship on Todd Frazier this fall and winter. And the Reds will probably have him on the block. The reality is that, despite(or perhaps because of) his performance in the HR Derby, his 2nd half OPS was a dreadful c. .670. Not that I suspect this to dissuade the Sox: bad 2nd half splits never have before. He's also a bad defender (much worse than his metrics suggest). And if the Sox get him (and I dearly hope they don't), they'll pay more than you suggest for 2 years of his greatness.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 7, 2015 -> 10:38 AM) The fact that they are not blaming the manager means they are blaming the players. I expect a very active winter for the White Sox. How are they going to move bad players and get anything in return? They can start with letting Alexei walk, although that won't be easy, as absurdly sentimental as this organization is. Otherwise, the bad players are the vets the acquired last year. go young, please.

I have no objection if the Sox keep Shuck around. I think they need to take a step back anyway.
-
Don Ventura pretty clearly didn't like Guerra. They barely pitched him when he was up.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 09:15 PM) I don't like the idea of Eaton in left. This team is power-starved enough as it is. They really need a slugger in LF. and thus Eaton should be traded. Sox could get a young third baseman and catcher for him. He and Trayce play the same position. Trayce is much better defensively.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 08:30 PM) Although, from a marketing persoective, Puig would at least stabilize the expected 20-25% dropoff in renewals after this season. You bring back the entire roster pretty much as is, along with Ventura, amd it could get as ugly as 30% lost. It's ridiculous for the Sox to make moves based on that. Yet, they are correct in one sense. This is a hero-worshiping fanbase. It's like they think one player can add 10+ wins to the ledger.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 05:49 PM) With Eaton having surgery on his throwing shoulder? Do you see him switching to the corner? I think trayce won the cf job for next year. The sox simply need to improve their defense. I can't see this not happening No 50/50 he's even back next year. Sox will do some major hero-worshiping in the offseason in a ridiculous attempt to counteract fan disinterest. Career years, veterans who made all star teams 2 years ago...come on down. it sold tickets last year, so double down this year. Todd Frazier and maybe even....Longoria. Elite! He was a sportscenter mainstay 3 years ago!! Put the package together now!

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 04:08 PM) With a top 10 first round pick and a comp pick for Shark this is a good year to go after a Heyward type player. No it isn't. you do that when you are ready to win. This is a good year to have 2 nice draft choices, for a team that desperately needs them.
-
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Oct 4, 2015 -> 03:48 PM) If the Sox end up with the 11th pick after today this will probably be the most disappointing season I've ever witnessed in my time as a fan. The Sox have no business going after QO free agents anyway.

Nothing like a scapegoat. Must have been Parent who was overpitching Sale and who leaves Danks in game after game at least until he's pitched the Sox out of the game.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 2, 2015 -> 07:26 AM) Would love to add a guy with previous manager experience to help Robin with the in-game stuff. After 3 seasons, you'd think he would learn some things... And then, what would Cooper do. Go back to just being pitching coach? Not a bad idea. He sure as heck can manage pitchers in-game.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 12:36 PM) They are signed to great deals, absolutely. That works in the Sox favor on what they could get back from other teams. Now, I don't think the Sox will do this. They'll try to craft some scenario where a 2016 team has a shot to surprise...and they'll probably fail again. Yep Now they could continue to build will still having a shot to surprise. But that would require trading, Quintama, Sale or Eaton. The Sox don't do such things. They're more likely to trade Trayce, the 2 johnsons and Fulmer for Todd Frazier and loudly proclaim we can dream again.
-
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 02:02 PM) The 1964 sox won 99 games with tremendous pitching and hardly any hitting. Maybe that could work again. Defense too. Sox outfield defense is rancid. Trayce playing center would help a lot

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 01:05 PM) Farmer is just the absolute worst Agree. I like DJ though. Now get a new TV crew.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 04:14 PM) I don't know, but there are more quality 3B in baseball than there are quality C. Arenado? Frazier? Frazier, and his OPS There have got to be some young 3B in the upper levels that we can get for a reasonable price. just do proper scouting and evaluation this time. As for C, Pirates got their C for a bullpen pitcher. Astros got Conger for a bullpen pitcher. He basically sucks, but he sucks less than Flowers. The Sox awful OF defense hurt Samardizja, a fly ball pitcher, more than anyone. Now why the Sox were so hell bent on trading for a fly ball pitcher is another question.

White Sox official website has a possible Quintana trade chip post

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 11:35 PM) So how do we improve the crap lineup? Trade the guy we took No. 1 this year plus another prospect for an MLB catcher, sign a couple free agents while really truly trying to trade Duke, Melky and LaRoche. It makes no sense to trade Q if we are trying to win anything. Absolutely not. We need the pitching depth. there are a few ML catchers who can hit anyway. Once again , trade Eaton. And if he's as good as everyone thinks he is, fantastic. That means we'll get more for him. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 27, 2015 -> 03:15 PM) Sox are about to be 10 under .500. Just yesterday they were on that hot streak and were just a game under. It's taken consistently bad baseball to get to a season low of 10 under. All the Sox have to do is win 1 more and Don Ventura will have improved this team from 2015. Leadership = Progress
-
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 27, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) Fire Robin. He's soooooo f***ing bad in all facets of the game. Cooper should walk arm in arm right there with him. He enabled Ventura. He's the one handling the pitchers...didnt' want a thing to do with EJ and now throws him 121 with expanded rosters.

QUOTE (Knackattack @ Sep 27, 2015 -> 02:50 PM) Nice play by Saladino. Wouldn't mind seeing him at SS next year. His bat plays decent for the position as well. Should have played SS every day in September. but this org. as extreme little interest in developing youth.
