  1. QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 18, 2015 -> 08:42 AM) Correct. Eaton appears to be a capable enough center fielder. If you have a guy who can be described that way, you let him play center. I'd put him on the market - see the offers. If Trayce is good enough or other replacements are available. The Sox want to win next year? C, 3b,SS, and 2B are as big an issue as Avi in RF. LF isn't the best either. They don't need to improve all of those, but at least some. No more than one "proven veteran" need apply.
  2. Is it possible that Brantly can hit Major League pitching? He's only 26. They play him at DH a lot so I assume he can't catch. Am I wrong to think that the records of the DSL, ASL and PL are meaningful re the state of low minors and quality of drafts. They can always load up the full season teams with org. guys to boost records; but not the rookie leagues.
  3. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 18, 2015 -> 03:50 AM) Red Sox need pitching, we've got arms in the minors. 1) This is the same approach the Sox have been doing. Get the "proven veteran" - he's elite. He's a hero. 2)Henley is a lousy defender. 3)Why should the Sox give up value for him and his contract...something anyone could have gotten for free a season ago? If it fails for 6 straight years, let's do it for a 7th.
  4. QUOTE (Dunt @ Aug 18, 2015 -> 07:43 AM) In 16 ABs, Trayce has already been worth 0.5 WAR. His defense, along with the potential of his bat, should make him an every day start from here on out. Give some of the other OFs rest and rotate him at DH. Just as long as you pinch hit for him in late innings.
  5. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 10:47 AM) Keppinger, Emilio, LaRoche. That's a lot of guys The Chairman has paid to do nothing. I wonder if he is ever going to call Kenny and Hahn into his office and say, "Fellas...." Well if you're including Laroche In the group, then the list would be a mile long.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 03:06 PM) You can add Sanchez/Micah to that list, although nobody would be surprised if those four (Trayce, Tyler), along with Avi, are basically replacement level players at best. I would be surprised. At least 1 will be better than replacement. Probably 2. But what's the alternative? Trade 4 of them for a proven Melky type? Another "elite" Samardzija? That's just clowning and has no chance of working. Lazy. You need young talent.
  7. QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 06:38 PM) Ventura loves to leave the starter in to get his brains bashed in. He is trying to save the bullpen... but at what cost. What's he saving his pen for? The offseason? This was Putnam's 3rd appearance in August. Ventura and Cooper have been saving the pen all season. Hahn made some savvy deals in the winter of 2013. Last year, he or Williams or both decided to go all in for "proven veterans" and it was, predictably, a disaster. Unknown to Hahn/Williams, apparently, career years are rarely repeated and players get worse in their 30s. And watch them do some extreme hero-worshiping this offseason...they'll go after some guy who made the NL All Start team - a real hero...the board will be gaga....and he'll be mediocre.
  8. Another subpar effort from Ventura/Cooper. Madden uses his pen. Ventura/Cooper make damn sure that starter gets 6 and 100+ Yea, Ventura should worry about celebrations. That's the ticket to baseball success.
  9. I'm no scout so I can't attest to bat speed and such, but his hitting stats are certainly comparable, if not better, than Russell's.
  10. Delightful. Get the proven veteran back for the stretch drive.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2015 -> 08:54 AM) He has years before you have to worry about that. Well he's 25, has never hit below .400 OBP anywhere. Be aggressive and creative. Russell and Scwharber for the Cubs were in A ball last year.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2015 -> 07:25 AM) Why would you want him to? He plays decent and improving defense at a premium position, why move him? Also his biggest weakness on D is his arm, which isn't bad but isn't a strength either and would be more exposed in the OF. I wouldn't except that our top prospect also play shortstop. If I dare to ask – what about third-base? I would assume that both can play second.
  13. Just thinking ahead - can Alvarez play OF?
  14. The Dash have been on fire the 2nd half and really are loaded with interesting prospects.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2015 -> 11:50 AM) We made a big trade and several big FA signings last offseason and then counted on rookies at 2b, and guys with limited track records of success in RF, 3b, and C, and many of those positions stung us all year. If we're going to play these guys again next year and hope they get better...great. They may very well do so. But don't go spending huge amounts of money on guys in their mid-30s or trading for guys a year from free agency if you're going to do that. The signings stung us as much as the young players. Good lord, do people still think that buying high on veterans at their peak or after is the way to build a baseball team? Hahn had the right idea in December of 2013. Our young player for their young player.
  16. North, can you post the link to where you explain how the minor league rule v draft works (I think I've read a write up about it on your site).
  17. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 09:33 PM) Why is Sale still pitching? Because Cooper and Ventura are managing....hopefully for their last 2 months.
  18. The way 24 year old Avi gets beat on, it's no wonder the Sox dispatch young position players for the Samardzijas of the world and sign the Dunns and Laroches.
  19. They have a chance to get Sale out of there with 97 pitches. Will they?
  20. QUOTE (staxx @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 06:46 PM) I can still see the reason for both Noesi and Drabek. Penny will be the one to go if they determine Jaye/Montas is ready. Concur
  21. Have we heard anything about Sox players clearing waivers? Alexei, maybe?
  22. I would also add that beginning in 2007, he got a lot more input into personnel (and he always had some), and that was disastrous.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) That is bad contract for bad contract. The equivalent for us would be something like Danks for Either. I would have, but not anymore. Sox are going to need Danks next year. RE another comment, I'm not sure I see any value that Laroche has.
  24. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 7, 2015 -> 01:20 PM) I know they won't but that doesn't change anything I said. No risk putting in/winning a claim. The team that wins does not have to have interest in working out a deal. The worst team still with a chance is going to claim him. Who's that - Baltimore? And at this point, they won't give value more than QO.
