QUOTE (staxx @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:45 PM) My train of thought as well. I could see Avi, Montas, EJ, and maybe someone like Jaye. I wouldn't even do that. Sox don't even need Ross. And who plays RF next year after trading our RF for this rent of Upton and his mighty .759 OPS.
-
Not trading Shark is what they should do. It's the right balance between going for it when the chances aren't great, and missing the opportunity to get something for him. They'll still get the comp pick to help the balance. Trading for rents would be inane, unless you can get a bat for a #20 prospect like the Angels did.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:38 PM) What are you talking about? The Royals dealt two top 3 prospects and the Blue Jays dealt one. Manae is #3, depending on the list. I guess some would consider Hoffman a top 3, but that's debatable; it was also for FOUR years of Tulo., not for .5-1.5 years of rent-a-vet.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:48 PM) Hoffman would have been selected 3rd if not for the TJ surgery. He's a top 25-30 talent, with the ability to be a frontline ace. Even though Tim Anderson's 48th and Montas is 63rd, there might not be more than a handful of GM's in the game who wouldn't choose Hoffman over both those two. Fulmer vs. Hoffman is a much more interesting conversation, though. You are way over-rating Hoffman. A ton of GMs would choose Anderson over Hoffman. Yea, some GMs might have picked him 3rd (cough - KW -cough) because he throws hard, but his fastball needs movement. He has a long way to go before showing he's a front-line ace. He didn't have ace-like numbers in A ball. Regardless, 1/2 a year of Tulo, not to mention the 4 years they get, is far more valuable than 1/2 a year of Justin Upton. People want one of these Cargos or Jay Bruce? Erik Johnson and Montas. Move on.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:12 PM) Exactly, Sox have the pitching prospects that teams could be looking for and they have enough guys that are/could be close in case of injury (Beck, Jaye, Drabek). Would you guys do Avi, Montas, Anderson, and Erik Johnson for Ross and Upton? I think I would. Oh come on. A top 25 prospect, another top 100, our starting RF and a ML ready starter?....for good pitcher and rent of a good (not great) hitter? Upton has a .759 OPS and is a rent. Ross would be a good pitcher for us, but we don't need a pitcher right now. His hype exceeds his results. Neither Cueto and Tulo required a single top 50 prospect. Yet, somehow, we should pay far more for inferior players.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:15 PM) After reading about KC's trade ... wouldn't Zobrist have been a good guy for the Sox to acquire? He draws walks and could have played 2B and DH'ed if LaRoche continues to stink. Sox may not have been able to beat KC's offer I guess. No a rent of Zobrist for hopes of a 1 game playoff would not have been a good acquisition. Tulo, who cost about the same, is far superior, younger, and signed for longer, would have been better.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 08:35 PM) The Sox have a chance to add Puig to a stable of reliable, ready to play younger players. This is a deal that could make them. To be able to build around Abreu/Puig on offense and Sale/Samarj/Rodon/Fulmer on the mound That's star power Time to deal Quintana, Puig, and any two prospect(s) not named Rodon, Anderson, or Fulmer for Puig and Guerrero. I would not trade Quintana and 2 top prospects for Puig. That's an overpay. Guerrero has little value at all....a prospect in the Sox #20 range. Straight up or not at all. And I don't trust Puig anyway. Fulmer is in A ball. Samardzija is a workhorse but his peripherals are questionable for long term deal.
-
There was no reason to send Samardzija out for the 9th. Ventura/Cooper beat the living hell out of these starters.
-
Danish has had an awful year. There hasn't been a team top 3 prospect dealt the entire trade-season....let's be sure to trade ours, Williams-style.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) Unless you have AJ Pollock ready to play in Arizona, who they considered the better player. Still didn't work out for them because they got Trumbo. They could have used their 2nd CF for someone who would have helped them (although they were able to dump Trumbo on the nutty Mariners).
-
Angels just got David Murhpy and his .790 OPS for a song. Much rather a move like that than loading up the prospects for Cargo.
-
They are depleting their prospects, but the Royals got 2 really good fits that address clear team weaknesses.

Blue Jays interested in Quintana or Samardjiza

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 04:10 PM) This team can't stand pat. Either sell Shark. Or go get Puig or possibly CarGo. They need a bat in the worst way. Yes they can stand pat. And it's probably the right move. They have a chance, but it's small and it's for a 1 game wildcard. That's not enough to "go for it" but it is enough to keep Shark and take the comp pick v. the returns. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) I agree. I don't understand what trading Q for prospects accomplishes other than having your farm system ranked higher. It certainly won't win more games. Improve catcher, 3b, OF. Get some bullets to trade for a rent in a year or 2 when it may make sense to trade for that cherry on top. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:32 PM) Don't mind them clearing their system for rentals. Indeed.
-
Don't want to trade prospect for either one of them. Young players, please. QUOTE (KillahPriest @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:02 PM) Trayce Thompson, Chris Beck & Daniel Webb. Take it or leave it. Not really that interested in him. Yep - that's about it for me, too. Nothing with real upside for these guys. People want to give up at least as much for Cargo than The Jays gave for the far, far superior Tulo. Hero worship on red alert.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Donaldson has been about a 6.5-7.0 WAR player now for 3 seasons, and he makes little now. While I think Q is under appreciated he isn't as valuable as Donaldson. Right, but you're also at peak performance for Donaldson. While Donaldson is more valuable now, it's not a trade I would want the Sox to make, esp considering they'd have to throw in more. Trade Q for young players, if he must be traded. But I'm not so sure he must be traded. -
They gave a top 100 prospect (not top 50) and a couple of other interesting pitching prospects and got to dump Reyes' contract in return for Tulo. Those interesting pitching prospects are the type we gave for, oh, say the rent of the mediocre Brett Myers in 2012.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 12:34 PM) Let's try to realistic here guys. Don't overvalue your team's players. Donaldson >>>> Quintana. And let's not hero worship either. He'll also be 30 this year about to get really expensive. Rather get improvements at multiple positions for Q. Re Quintana, Hamels WAR since 2013 = 11.4; Quintana = 11.1. Quintana is younger, cheaper and signed til 2020. Be very careful about trading him. -
QUOTE (coco1997 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) Sure, the defense got better when Johnson was demoted and just recently when Saladino replaced Gillaspie, but it's only been within the last week that they've started scoring runs. For the majority of the season the offense overall has been historically bad. The offense was, but the team wasn't. Sometimes it takes young players a while to get going (Sanchez). But the Sox never fell completely into the abyss. The improved infield D helped that. And really the team started playing better once Saladino took over 3rd. I know we lost 5/6 right out of the break, but that was to a)2 excellent teams and b) 2 of those games could have gone either way.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 12:14 PM) George Ofman 45 mins · Twitter · Bluejays interested in either Samardzija or Quintana. Sox stand pat...for now. they don't have what it takes for Quintana. -
The trouble with trading Shark for a "my rent for your rent" is that both teams would give up their comp picks, which easily could create a lose-lose situation. I'd trade him for younger prospects...but KW won't.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) It's an extra $50 million, plus a $2 million trade kicker, plus the trade then triggers a full no trade clause. The White Sox don't have a $20 million guy on the payroll to offset it like Toronto did, and at the same position. True, but the way I see it, had they not sent Reyes, they would have had to send even less in prospects....and they didn't even send a top 50, while also getting that salary relief by dumping Reyes on them. People here wanted Hoffman + for 1/2 year of Shark. Well the Jays sent Hoffman + for Troy T, with net additional salary of only $54 mill through 2020. This is a steal.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) The more money you are willing to pick up, the fewer prospects you will be required to give up. True, but that money pick up was muted by sending Reyes, who, with his salary (around the same as Tulo's although for fewer years), had negative value. This was a steal for Toronto I think. Rodon >>>>>>> than Hoffman for goodness sakes.

Very true, but the competence of Saladino and Sanchez, two young players, has been key in this mini-turnaround. And they are handling their positions defensively. Keep building
