Soto should play DH more. Actually, I hope he's traded, but until then, DH

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) Personally, I doubt they trade Barnes but he'd be a nice get if you could finagle him in a Shark trade. Not sure the Sox are trying to trade for an OF but LA has Crawford/Ethier/Pederson/Puig/Guerrero/Heisey/Enrique Hernandez/Van Slyke with Scott Schebler, last offseason's stat-line prospect evaluator's favorite, doing okay in AAA. You would think Pederson and Crawford are the only locks to stay in that glut. Sox wouldn't (shouldn't) want Eithier, Guerrero, Heisey. That leaves Hernandez (not an everyday player) Van Slyke or Schebler. Schebler is someone they should have tried to trade for last winter, instead of signing the vets. I'd still take him (presuming the scouts think he can hit major league pitching; those western PCL numbers tend to inflate).

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 08:59 AM) Simple question, would you trust two of Saladino/Sanchez/Johnson to plug up 2B/SS for the forsee able future? No, but I would be willing to do that for next year. Still would need a 3B.
-
Cargo costs $18.5 million per year. Woefully overpaid. How about getting competence at 2b, SS, 3b, C, LF and DH and THEN bring in some heroes.
-
Heyward had a .735 OPS last year. Gt him and you'll still have Melky at LF, Laroche at DH and no one at 3B. We could fill 3 positions with solid players for that kind of money (assuming the Sox would evaluate talent reasonably accurately, which is admittedly a dubious assumption). Which is why I lean to trading sale if we could get full price.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 09:41 PM) I think he blows. Melky blows and Laroche blows. The great Kenny Hahn winter moves, and they'll bring them back to their starting positions next year. Never give up on a dead veteran. Tonight was a disgrace. Ventura and Cooper should be ashamed of themselves. But they have no shame - the team apparently exists for their comfort.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 10:25 PM) .285/.341/.435 seems like a good pair for elite defense. I'd say he's worth the money. I'd say he isn't with all of the holes on this team. That kind of money needs big production, which he hasn't brought in a while. Too much hero worship in this organization. They needs solid baseball players at multiple positions.
-
QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 07:26 PM) I have the weirdest feeling they will go hard after him after just missing out on him last offseason. I am probably incredibly wrong though. Good gracious, Kenny Hahn wanted to rent him too? Madness! Heyward doesn't hit near well enough for the money he will command.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 08:30 PM) He's not wasting service time. He came up after the deadline. They control him for 6 more seasons after this one. It's fine. he could have come up next year after the deadline. Is he learning his 3rd pitch? Is he learning to gain command? No, he's pitching for the highest odds to get the next man out...so Cooper/Ventura win 76 games instead of 72. No reason to be going through this part of his development in the majors.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 08:24 PM) I guess there's no harm letting Rodon gain experience since the team is going nowhere, but it's kind of painful to watch a guy with some talent stink on occasion. They're wasting service time on this nonsense. Poor asset management all the way around. Not only would he preserve service time in Charlotte, he'd get better coaching and would be pitched to develop, not to be better than Noesi.
-
Hahn should fire Cooper and Ventura tomorrow.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 01:33 PM) Where are we getting the impression that Tyler Flowers is decent? He's labour league average offensively. Bigger problems all over the diamond
-
The Sox have been loading up with old guys or the last 6+ years....where has that gotten them? Using career stats to project future production of a 35 year old is madness. Selling now (low) may not be the right idea; on the other hand, neither is bringing him back for $10 million.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 10:29 PM) Unless I am reading the rules wrong, there is also the chance that they trade Bonifacio and/or Beckham within 10 days, opening up a spot for Gillaspie to be brought back to Chicago. that could happen, except...who is going to trade for those 2?
-
Petricka would have little trade value...Ventura/Cooper love him, the throws grounders, but his numbers are terrible. Putnam would have the most value of those realistically could be traded. Strikeout guy. Albers may have some value in another week. I hope the Sox consider moving some of these guys, but they don't sell high, so I doubt it.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 07:13 PM) And that's another thing that made it a bad signing. League adjustment, declining stats against lefties, 2nd half worse than his 1st half in 2014 when it's normally the other way around. Sox need to focus on AL players to get more predictable results. The stats were there . Why no one in the front office paid any attention to them is beyond my comprehension. It's not the first time this has happened. I get that prospects are challenging to evaluate, but the this FO can't even evaluate the veterans appropriately.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 09:58 PM) Take it for what it's worth, but Hahn said last year that outside of Alexei and Rondon, Saladino was the best defensive SS in the organization. Which implies he's better than Semien (A's starting shortstop), Carlos Sanchez, Leury, and Beckham. And SS looks like it would fit perfectly with his bat.
-
I see former Knight starter Terance Marin is now in the pen (joining Junior Guerra). Was there a call up necessitating room? Or maybe they think he's a bullpen guy ultimately?
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 12:49 PM) Q will get you more, unfortunately But signing him long term ties you to a fly ball pitcher who's already 30. Trading Q will get more because he's better, younger, and has a better contract.
-
Pirates just called up Brent Morel to replace their injured SS in some fashion. I think we have a team for which Beckham would be an upgrade (not to mention Alexei).
-
Sounds good to me. Soto's interesting...kind of forgot about him.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) I feel like if Saladino were a cardinal he'd have a decent 8 year career. I do not have hope for him on our team. I know what you mean. He steps in fundamentally sound with a nice stroke. And then he hangs around this team and these coaches and they wring that right out of him.

Why Micah Johnson should not be moved to the outfield
GreenSox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) I don't get the appeal of Leury. Posted a .399 OPS last year in the majors as a 23-year old, with disappointing defense. For all the flak he gets, Sanchez has an OPS about 80 points higher and on the rise lately, and has shown very good defense - again as a 23 year old. Sanchez' numbers in AAA at 22 and 23 dwarf anything Garcia did at same age and level. Why choose Garcia over Sanchez? Because he can play CF in a pinch? The team has a 4th OF and others as needed. I just don't get it. I wasn't choosing Garcia over Sanchez.... if the Sox can clear the vets out of the middle infield someone has top play short, so I picked Sanchez (he has played short, hasn't he?). No one else can play 3rd but Saladino, although the Sox really need a better bat there long term. As for Garcia, he's the only one left for utility and I don't see him as any worse than what's there now. Maybe they can keep Beckham and leave Leury in the minors. Regardless, if Micah straightened out his D some, bring him up. -
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 20, 2015 -> 03:40 PM) How can someone with that bad of numbers be considered a option to return for a year? A better stop gap can be found. Like *shudder* our own players in the organization.

Cooper waited too long to get a pitcher warmed up...when Sale supposedly needed all this rest. Having 2 managers isn't helping
