Ventura back to the Abreu batting second silliness I see.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 01:16 PM) Is their that much risk in Puig. Even if he's crazy, he's still performing above his contract. Immaturity isn't his only risk. Look at his numbers - they went from great to good to pretty good. Decline, decline. You value him based off of his first year. He's not a great player right now.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 12:49 PM) The upside of a Q for Puig package (maybe Sox give up a guy on their side or Dodgers add a name, but primary package being these 2) is going to be with the White Sox, imo. There's no question about that. I said Q for Puig was fair; I just wouldn't do it because of Puig's immaturity. Puig has big upside and big risks. Q is steady.

Salary relief, fine.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 12:14 PM) Matt Spiegel has been proposing a Puig for Quintana deal all morning. Matt Spiegel @MattSpiegel670 12m12 minutes ago Avisail Garcia and Jose Quintana for Yasiel Puig. Who says no? I love Quintana but Puig is the type of talent I'd ideally want in return for him. Supposedly, Abreu and Puig don't get along. Thoughts, everyone? A lot of people don't get along with Puig. No. Puig is a good player, but not great. Quintana for Puig is a "fair" trade, but not one I would do. Puig's production has declined each season. Certainly wouldn't throw Avi in there. Cargo? Good lord. The Sox signed its Cargo - Melky Cabrera. And you would get Cargo for 1 more year.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 08:06 AM) Aside from what I have all said in this thread, that's another reason to trade Samardzija. The Sox desperately need hitters throughout the organization and trading Samardzija can help with that. Certainly agree. I'm not sure why the Sox liked Samardzija so much in the first place. He's not really a ground ball pitcher, which they (rightly) prefer.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 08:26 AM) How do you leave Danish out of the top 6? A 20 year old in AA that has posted a 2.83 ERA in July's 19 IP. Yes, he may just be Jon Garland, but he's going to pitch in the majors for a long time as a #3-4 starter. And a 4+ ERA with a 1.63 WHIP for the whole season in AA. Strikeouts are modest as well.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 11:15 PM) No reason to trade him ASAP. Take it to the deadline. Let the bidding get hot. Well there were 15 scouts at his start where he thee a complete game shutout against a (the?) top hitting team. May not get more heated than that. I also suspect that between now and the deadline, there will be a greater supply of pitchers on the market than there are now.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 02:57 PM) Barstool had me on to talk about the Samardzija situation and state of the Sox. http://www.barstoolsports.com/chicago/fire...de/#getcomments Read that earlier. Didn't know it was you. Well-reasoned analysis.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 09:51 PM) I would be very disappointed if the centerpiece for Shark is a pitcher. They have to start getting some hitters in here. As we see this year, what good is having a rotation of 4 good-great starting pitchers is you can't score runs. I agree with Balta. Give it a week. There really is no rush rush right now. Well if they weren't going to trade him by tomorrow, there really is no rush. Best player available. Nothing wrong with stockpiling young pitching...can move it for young hitting as well. Sox don't have that much pitching anyway. In fact, now that Montas is called up, they don't have a top prospect pitcher anywhere near the majors (I'm discounting E Johnson; his stats are so good, that to have not been called up tells me they don't think he can beat major league hitting).

Why Micah Johnson should not be moved to the outfield

How is it that Schwarber and Gallo, two players who also aren't very good defenders at their chosen positions, can go out and play some outfield without much problem? -
Frankie Montas to join Sox for Double Header Friday

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 06:45 PM) If the Sox potentially see him as a reliever long-term, maybe other teams do too. What if the Sox were showcasing him to package him with Samardzija to a team that needs a starter and another reliever? That would certainly have to interest Houston and Toronto into giving something real up. A couple of appearances won't prove anything one way or the other. Sox have plenty of effective relievers to trade. He's a top 100 prospect- not the guy to trade. -
I still like dealing with Astros, if they'll give up some of their good guys. I'd take Appel, whom they seem to be tiring of, for Shark. Coop could straighten him out.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) How about they just hire a professional broadcaster as the TV PBP guy? Where you really need a professional is in the radio booth. Including the Sox. Farmer is dull and has little to say. Hawk's problem is that he's too obnoxious in his homerism; and his moodiness detracts as well.
-
Let's hope so. Dump Hawk and Farmer.
-
Well I guess one Adam Dunn deserves one Nolan Sanburn. I expect Albers to be called up soon. If they didn't care about him, they just would have let him have his week off with Charlotte. Sent him to Birmingham presumably to get some work in.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 08:42 PM) Ahh my bad. That explains it then. I expect Montas and Saladino to head back after Friday's DH Certainly hope not. No reason Saladino shouldn't be starting at 3B most nights. Who are they putting there - Beckham? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 08:14 PM) Yeah, I don't think that is it at all. Thinking big picture, they have called up Beck, Carroll, Junior Guerra, and now Montas... but not Johnson. Call me crazy, but that means something. I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson involved in one of these deadline deals. Just a hunch. Yea, something is up with that. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 07:45 PM) Holy F***. yes, it's OPS. Put another way, if I liked Lucroy and wanted to replace the catcher, yes that would be a beneficial deal for the Sox to replace a 1/2 year rent of Shark with 2.5 of Lucroy. That more than accommodates a necessary discount for his terrible year. But the Brewers wouldn't sell him for that discounted price. They would want current year totally ignored.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) So you wouldn't swap Samardzija for Lucroy? That's not realistic. Brewers don't need Samardzija. Lucroy has an OPS of .631 this year, coming off of an injury. They won't let him go for anywhere near a .631 value, and I, not a hero worshiper, don't like paying for past production. I like the way Flowers is working with these pitchers- framing and such. I was mistaken - it's 2.5 more years.
-
QUOTE (BigFinn @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 06:17 PM) Do you think that the Sox could get some younger prospects for Samardzija and flip them to Milwaukee for Jonathan Lucroy? Hope not. Off injury, terrible year, free agent in 2017.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) That 2/3 of an inning is a sufficient sample size to say he's a bust, clearly. Not a bust; just may not be ready. -
15 scouts at his last outing, and he throws a complete game shut out. What more could they want if the goal is to trade him? I doubt they trade him.

The draft is like hitting a baseball. You will get a lot more outs than hits, but if you are skilled and have a good approach, you will be successful. A lot of high draft choices bust. Conor Gillaspie, e.g., was a first round draft choice, but the team that drafted him has won 3 WS since. I read that Tampa hasn't had a player drafted in rounds 1-10 succeed in the majors since the 2007 draft.
