Philosophically: Bring in young talent. Develop young talent Stop bringing in hitters on their downward cycle. Stop wasting scarce resources on utility level talent. Practically: Market Laroche, Samardzija and Alexei for good young hitters, who can also play D, regardless of position. Anyone in the bullpen is movable. The most likely is Duke. Move Danks to the pen Send Rodon to Charlotte to work on the changeup Bring up Junior Guerra. Watch Drabek and maybe bring him up if he can get his walks down.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 30, 2015 -> 05:37 PM) Really think it is DFA time for him it is just not working out. Bad? He's the Designated hitter batting 2nd. you don't put a bad hitter in that spot... -

In the annals of Ventura clownsmanship, bringing in a situational lefty to face the 2 RH Astros power hitters may just lead the pack. -
1. Hitter 2. No Fulmer 3. No bullpen pitchers

Peavy was also considered an injury risk and was 2 years older and was clearly on the decline plane of his career. When Samardzija had 1.5 years left on his contract, his price was much more than Peavy with 1.5 years left on his contract. Plus, Samardzija comes with a comp pick. Peavy didn't Thus an estimate that Samardzija with 1/2 years = Peavy with 1.5 years. If anything, more.

QUOTE (oldsox @ May 29, 2015 -> 10:46 PM) Gordo at $2mm per is still one of the ten worst contracts in MLB. Where does $3 mill* for Bonifacio rank then? + an option at the bargain price of $4 mill, with a $1 mill buyout

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) Samardzija will have value, but nowhere near the amount of value to get anything in the neighborhood of Addison Russell. Even if he rebounds, he's a pending free agent now, and he's the third best option on the market. Yes, but the good thing is that #s1 and 2, Cueto and Hammel, will command an Addison Russel...thus, Samardzija is #1 in the affordable category. Should be something around a Peavy return. As for SS, we could play Garcia or maybe even Saldino there (he's playing SS in Charlotte, for a reason I would presume).

He stroke seems more compact. Maybe the Angels corrected than in that 6 weeks he was there.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2015 -> 11:03 AM) I know Carroll doesn't have any ceiling to speak of, but he has done great work in his time as a middle and long reliever. I wouldn't have thought it before, but I am willing to keep running him out there until he proves otherwise. 1.55 WHIP 3.6 K/9 Just as soon give someone else a shot.

Junior Guerra has been the most productive pitcher at AA or AAA this year. Those high K totals suggest maybe his is a late, late, late bloomer.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 10:24 AM) I was referring to the Addison Russell trade as the universally accepted overpay. I don't think we overpaid for Samardzija at all. We didn't overpay, but it was still not a good decision for a 73 win team to trade for a rent QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 09:50 AM) For a year an a half of a pitcher pitching much better. We're selling a worse version for just a couple months. And everyone in the world thought that was an overpay in the first place. It's not a worse version; he never was an ace. He got off to a bad start, but in another couple of weeks his numbers will be near identical to what they were with the Cubs. It's just 1 year less on the contract. I certainly wouldn't sign him for the numbers bandied about. I think we can get more value than a comp pick is worth. Alexei needs to get his act together. I never expected him to replicate last season (which is why he should have been moved in December) but putting on clown shows really depresses value. I like Laroche and think he has a lot of value; I also think we cannot go through another season with both Garcia and Cabrera in the OF, so one of those guys can DH. If no one will pay his value, keep him. Are we going to get elite prospects for these guys? No. But we have a hard time finding basic competence at positions, so we might be able to really improve.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 28, 2015 -> 03:15 PM) Doug Padilla @ESPNChiSox 2m2 minutes ago Scott Carroll optioned. Chris Beck added to the roster for Game 2. It's about time. Plenty of pitchers having good years in Charlotte - see what they can do.

QUOTE (Mike F. @ May 3, 2015 -> 06:58 PM) Maybe Ramirez, LaRoche, Bonifacio, Samardzija, etc just to name a few. Who do you think the Sox will trade if they decide to sell? Plenty Laroche (Cardinals) Samardzija (numerous teams). Alexei Duke All would bring value Sign samardzija in the offseason if we want (although he isn't an ace) QUOTE (StRoostifer @ May 28, 2015 -> 09:11 AM) Trading Shark and/or Alexei will not replenish the farm, they just do not hold that kind of value. The only way is for the Sox to entertain the idea of trading one or more of their core players which I doubt happens. Like I said, just have to ride it out and see what winter brings. They absolutely would bring value. "rebuild the farm" of course not. Value? Yes. Waiting until winter further diminishes value - there are contenders now who need a SS.

Good gracious, if he's good, there's plenty of room for him in this organization. Lord help we actually have 2 outfielders or some depth.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2015 -> 07:51 PM) Tried getting him to qualify for win. Should have never let him face Donaldson again. He's given up 6 runs - let's make sure he gets that hard-earned win.
-
The pen is rested. Same nonsense as last year - Ventura refuses to pull Danks until he implodes.
-
Absolutely do NOT fire Steverson. He's the only non-insider on this staff. He uses a modern approach. It's not his fault Kenny loads this team with stiffs. He got a lot out of the younger players like Abreu, Eaton (at least last year) and Avisail this year. Gillaspie improved too. Get rid of Bell. And let Hahn handle all personnel.
-
What was that, 6 pitches to get through the 9th? Throws a complete game with less than 90 pitches. And our hitting coach is a take-pitches and walks philosophy. Something's not right.

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 25, 2015 -> 06:22 PM) I was definitely one of Surkamp's bigger fans but I think it's silly to make any judgement on the return. Unless you saw something I didn't there's next to no information on Smith as a pitcher. Surkamp's ceiling was very limited, who knows what Smith's is. At best Smith's a bullpen pitcher. Most likely an org guy. Sox have Noesi, Carrol, and Danks taking up space. Should try some of these AAA guys.
-
Q and Sale should be split in the rotation- I don't know why they aren't. And I know it's not Carroll's fault, but none of the guys in Charlotte are better than him? The problem with this org in trading is that they refuse to sell high. They got a gift last year with the 32 yo SS off of a near career year and they refused to pull the trigger.

I was wrong about the Houston Astros, it seems
GreenSox replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
They also lead the majors in homers, and by a mile. (on a side note -- a certain other team is tied for 28th). -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 23, 2015 -> 12:18 AM) People hate his mechanics and delivery and size, but the fact of the matter is he led the NCAA in K's and was dominating out there all year long. Sox have had a good recent history with funky pitchers that work. One: Sale. And he is tall and his delivery isn't nearly as funky and he wasn't as hard used. I can see it if we were getting a bargain -- picking 15th or something. The Sox haven't drafted a developed college hitter* with its #1 choice since Beckham. And he was rushed of course, but at least he's still in the game. *Mitchell was high-school raw when drafted.

The Sox have 4 starters throwing very well in Charlotte call one or two of them up
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2015 -> 10:03 AM) Those are reasons for me why I'd actually like to see them do it. The team is quite good at this exact path. Well you have a point there...it's the one development technique they do well.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 21, 2015 -> 12:26 PM) Keith Law has the White Sox taking Fulmer. http://chicago.suntimes.com/baseball/7/71/...g-draft-insider Pass. Bad mechanics, hard used.
