  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 07:25 PM) Just to note - Samardzija is performing significantly worse than Edwin Jackson was when he was traded. The return in the Edwin Jackson deal was "someone absorbed Teahen's contract", Jason Frasor, and Zach Stewart. The Blue Jays then got the "Cardinals desperate to move him" Colby Rasmus. But he's performing significantly better than when the Sox traded FOR Jackson; the Sox gave up their 2 top pitching prospects for Jackson. Sox under Williams didn't exactly cut value-laden deals. I just want some hitters in here; don't care what position really except we don't need 1B.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 07:22 PM) When Himes drafted McDowell, Ventura, Thomas, and Fernandez, no one complaned they were rushed. That's because they turned into McDowell, Ventura, Thomas and Fernandez.
  3. There's no reason to rush him up into a bullpen. That's such a waste of an asset. Using #8 pick in the draft to create a bullpen pitcher isn't a serious effort.
  4. Cubs get best hitter in the draft who was sitting there for us.
  5. Career obp of .275. Lord no.
  6. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 6, 2015 -> 02:08 PM) Don't you need Melky to come around if you really want a shot at the division or a WC? Yes. Give him some rest now and then. But this idea that Shuck is an everyday player...happens ever time one of the bevy of utility players in this org. has a good week.
  7. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 7, 2015 -> 09:31 PM) He would also cost this team even more runs defensively. Samardzija was coming off 2 good years. Semien can hit. We could find a place for him. yea, shark had 2 good years...and we'd only have him for 1. No idea who come up with the trade, but trading for Shark is Kenny Williams' MO. (as were some of the other moves).
  8. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 2, 2015 -> 11:24 PM) What? After his last start? Call up a journey man for the future ace-2 of this staff. No thanks. A lot of you are biting into this Guerra hype, just like a lot of you were biting on Wilkins' hype last year. I think they're completely different. For one thing, trust AAA pitching numbers much more than AAA hitting numbers. If Rodon's not developing his change, he's not going to be an ace. Thus, Charlotte.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 2, 2015 -> 10:38 PM) But name another team in which he'd be a starter? Are there any? He's actually way worse than DeAza. That's absurd. Eaton's 2014 was better than any full season of De Aza.
  10. Junior Guerra to the bullpen? Send him put and let him start. Send Rodon down to learn the changeup.
  11. Pitch him against just lefties and see what he does. Yes I know the small sample size says he's better against righties (although Ventura bringing him in against the right handed heart of the Astros' order on Sat probably blew that up).
  12. Here comes the hero-worship. He's the greatest ever. The elite, the best of the best. Trade every decent prospect we have for one player. Go for it! And if we still suck, we'll still have a hero. Who cares about defensive holes on half the diamond, back end of the rotation, underachieving veterans, and utility-ceiling bench. One player will solve the problems. Or you can build an organization and get these players on their upward trajectory without giving away all the young players, as so many are want to do.
  13. Adding more declining veterans (i.e. this list) will just create more problems. This team's defensive lapses have been a big contributor to the poor start; this is a groundball pitching staff. You cannot back these pitchers up with an infield clown show. Yet, people can't wait to do it. These are the kind of players that put the Sox into this mess. Pass The Sox need to add some of their own to the list
  14. Philosophically: Bring in young talent. Develop young talent Stop bringing in hitters on their downward cycle. Stop wasting scarce resources on utility level talent. Practically: Market Laroche, Samardzija and Alexei for good young hitters, who can also play D, regardless of position. Anyone in the bullpen is movable. The most likely is Duke. Move Danks to the pen Send Rodon to Charlotte to work on the changeup Bring up Junior Guerra. Watch Drabek and maybe bring him up if he can get his walks down.
  15. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 30, 2015 -> 05:37 PM) Really think it is DFA time for him it is just not working out. Bad? He's the Designated hitter batting 2nd. you don't put a bad hitter in that spot...
  16. In the annals of Ventura clownsmanship, bringing in a situational lefty to face the 2 RH Astros power hitters may just lead the pack.
  17. 1. Hitter 2. No Fulmer 3. No bullpen pitchers
  18. Peavy was also considered an injury risk and was 2 years older and was clearly on the decline plane of his career. When Samardzija had 1.5 years left on his contract, his price was much more than Peavy with 1.5 years left on his contract. Plus, Samardzija comes with a comp pick. Peavy didn't Thus an estimate that Samardzija with 1/2 years = Peavy with 1.5 years. If anything, more.
  19. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 29, 2015 -> 10:46 PM) Gordo at $2mm per is still one of the ten worst contracts in MLB. Where does $3 mill* for Bonifacio rank then? + an option at the bargain price of $4 mill, with a $1 mill buyout
  20. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) Samardzija will have value, but nowhere near the amount of value to get anything in the neighborhood of Addison Russell. Even if he rebounds, he's a pending free agent now, and he's the third best option on the market. Yes, but the good thing is that #s1 and 2, Cueto and Hammel, will command an Addison Russel...thus, Samardzija is #1 in the affordable category. Should be something around a Peavy return. As for SS, we could play Garcia or maybe even Saldino there (he's playing SS in Charlotte, for a reason I would presume).
  21. He stroke seems more compact. Maybe the Angels corrected than in that 6 weeks he was there.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2015 -> 11:03 AM) I know Carroll doesn't have any ceiling to speak of, but he has done great work in his time as a middle and long reliever. I wouldn't have thought it before, but I am willing to keep running him out there until he proves otherwise. 1.55 WHIP 3.6 K/9 Just as soon give someone else a shot.
  23. Junior Guerra has been the most productive pitcher at AA or AAA this year. Those high K totals suggest maybe his is a late, late, late bloomer.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 10:24 AM) I was referring to the Addison Russell trade as the universally accepted overpay. I don't think we overpaid for Samardzija at all. We didn't overpay, but it was still not a good decision for a 73 win team to trade for a rent QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 29, 2015 -> 09:50 AM) For a year an a half of a pitcher pitching much better. We're selling a worse version for just a couple months. And everyone in the world thought that was an overpay in the first place. It's not a worse version; he never was an ace. He got off to a bad start, but in another couple of weeks his numbers will be near identical to what they were with the Cubs. It's just 1 year less on the contract. I certainly wouldn't sign him for the numbers bandied about. I think we can get more value than a comp pick is worth. Alexei needs to get his act together. I never expected him to replicate last season (which is why he should have been moved in December) but putting on clown shows really depresses value. I like Laroche and think he has a lot of value; I also think we cannot go through another season with both Garcia and Cabrera in the OF, so one of those guys can DH. If no one will pay his value, keep him. Are we going to get elite prospects for these guys? No. But we have a hard time finding basic competence at positions, so we might be able to really improve.
