  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) Why don't you use his line from last year like you did Rickie Weeks? Besides a .687 OPS is better than what Conor is going to give you vs. LHP. Maybe, but Gillaspie still only has less than 200 PA hitting against lefties. And .687 is still terrible. And just to clarify, I'm not in favor of exchanging Beckham for some equally medicore/bad veteran 2B in another uniform. Rather put Sanchez or someone out there.
  2. Is Beckham still hitting .050? That' s not worthy of an utility infielder spot. There's no more growth to him...he's not a young player. I'd rather see Sanchez there. The problem with our bench is that we have guys who are good fielders, but not great fielders; and they can't hit a lick. So they can't really do much. If you want a fielder, have a great one like Bradley Jr or Peter in ST Louis. As for pinch running, if they don't score, they then have to take the field and may have to bat. I saw ABreu pulled far too many times fo my tastes for a pinch runner anyway.
  3. I believe that there were 76 relievers in MLB that averaged at least a K per inning. The Sox had 1 - and that was Cleto in limited duty. (veal, too, in 6IP). The guys were young, so they can improve; but I also don't think we had many "must carry" on that staff last year. As for Crain, he hasn't pitched in nearly 2 years and is 34. Even if he does come back, at what level of effectiveness will he deliver?
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 08:14 PM) Why does Micah Johnson need to be a 2 to 3 WAR player to warrant the 2B job when you think Sanchez is a 1 WAR player? If their performances are going to be even remotely similar, then you're better off giving the everyday at-bats to the guy who has a chance of being a long-term solution at the position. I think the vast majority of front office types & scouts would agree that guy is Micah. I will counter that. Because Micah has a high ceiling, he should be on the 25 only if truly ready to face major league pitching. Just beating out Sanchez doesn't mean he's really ready. Putting him in the majors before he can hit major league pitching, often stunts prospects and brings on bad habits.
  5. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 12:47 PM) Interesting idea, but wouldn't people who just spam Abreu/LaRoche rather than vary their picks get more points? There should be some sort of "Abreu twice per week" limit. But you only get 1 point for an Abreu homer. If you pick Avi, you get 3 points.
  6. That's kind of a strange ranking; Tigers and Angels have farm systems at the bottom, but they are in the top 1/2 on this list.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 10, 2015 -> 04:49 PM) With Johnson apparently running (lol) away with the 2B job, Beckham is really only considered for the UTIL INF job. And he'd be fine for that, hitting against LHP a lot. It's him or Carlos Sanchez in that role (theoretically could be both but not likely). I think they're both fine for that. Are they giving Beckham any time at short?
  8. Micah is a real prospect. Thus, I want him here when he's really read for the majors. Beating out Beckham or Sanchez is a low bar and doesn't mean he's ready. I'm leery because while he's hit at every level, he didn't hit at AAA in his short stint. Also reports are that he needs work on his defense. Seems like he needs more AAA time and I hate to see another stunted prospect. As for Eaton and steals, that Abreu bats 3rd really takes away some of Eaton's ability to steal. With Abreu up in 2 spots, why take the chance? I'd like to see the lineup Eaton..X...Melky...Abreu...
  9. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 10:10 AM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin · 10m 10 minutes ago Rodon starts Friday per Coop Still hope we hold him back, even if he's ready. What is it, a month for a full extra year of service?
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 11:16 AM) I just read a good, but probably easy for a big White Sox fan, trivia question. There is still an active player who had a teammate who was a teammate of Minnie's. Are you including the 1980 stint? I guess it must be.
  11. QUOTE (shoeless_joe21 @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) None of the flyers the Sox took last year seemed to pan out, so it only seems fair that this year's batch turns into a bunch of Esteban Loaizas. Putnam?
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 25, 2015 -> 03:54 PM) FWIW, there's no reason to believe that Sanchez isn't ready. He's repeated AAA and did very well there last year. There's reason to believe he's not going to be a very good major leaguer, but I'd be shocked if he isn't at least competent and probably slightly more valuable than Beckham ever was over a full season. Micah has a much higher bust potential, because he really hasn't been any good in AAA yet. But, that's why he probably won't break camp with the team. And that's also why I hope they just send Micah to AAA even if he's a tad better than Sanchez...he could end up being a lot better with proper seasoning. he hit everywhere but AAA, but wasn't there for long. But Sanchez should be competent. I'm good with Beckham as a utility player and platoon hitter.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 12:08 PM) I think you'd more likely see diminishing marginal returns at 3B or C, where for the cost of getting an upgrade you have to give up an arm and a leg. For the #4, I don't think you see nearly the diminishing returns overall. I agree with you on diminishing returns; for C or 3B. I'd put another top of the rotation starter in that category as well. The thing about any starter is that our best products are largely starters. Help should be on the way fairly soon
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 08:18 PM) FWIW yea, the Sox could use some good platooning on offense.
  15. The Sox obviously loaded the 40 man with bullpen arms; and they will lose some, I believe, if they don't use them. That could be a reason for the expanded pen. Hopefully 10+ pitch well, then we can move some in July for other needs.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 02:28 PM) The Sox are back in win now mode. If Rodon pitches like he can, they will make a space for him, somewhere. They are in win now, without hurting the future. You lose, what, 20% of his service time with an early callup. He needs to be ace quality to be up before June. And certainly not as a bullpen pitcher - ever.
  17. Pretty solid synopsis of the Tigers chances, I'd say. I think the Padres acquired the most talent, but it may take them 1/2 a season or more to sort it out...they need to make more moves to move excess and shore up weaknesses. Sox need more moves too, but they have no excess on the 25 roster. It will come from the minors (either using them or trading them) or FA signing next year.
  18. I'm a little curious about this signing. First, he's a mediocre pitcher to begin with. Second, the Sox loaded the 40 man with several new relief pitchers, several of whom are "use or lose": Cleto (not new but not no 25 man for most of the year), Fernandez, Garcia, Jennings, Ynoa. Plus, they signed 2 FAs, which means 2 incumbents are off. To keep all of these relievers, they had to jettison Jordan Danks. I'm not a fan of his, but the Sox do seem a bench glove short at this time.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 10:56 AM) he is monotone, but the nonsense that comes out of his mouth more than matches Hawk Well, tone and delivery are how I look at it. What Hawk says isn't nearly as obnoxious as the way he says it. Listen to the Tigers radio announcers - those guys are bigger homers and jaw more nonsense than Hawk -but they aren't as obnoxious about it.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 17, 2015 -> 10:45 AM) I hope you arent referring to Farmer, because he is as over the top as they come Farmer puts me to sleep.
  21. I have no idea whose fault it is, but Hawk is way too over the top for my tastes. Which is a contrast to the radio announcer who is too under the top.
  22. A 4th OF who can actually hit, even if from only 1 side of the plate. have no interest in catchers whose main credential is that they don't play for the Sox and they aren't named Flowers.
  23. Very happy with Laroche. My favorite signing: DH and some relief for Abreu.
  24. QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 10, 2015 -> 12:00 AM) assuming if Jeff S doesn't sign, they will get an additional 1 rounder outside the top 10+. In 2016
  25. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 9, 2015 -> 02:07 PM) I think I would give up Davidson, Montas, Anderson and Danish for him. Would that be enough? Once again, I'm just thinking out loud here. Good lord. You're paying over double his value. This idea that this one hero is going to win us a world series is just silly. And does anyone even bother to look at his recent production? + on the hook contractually thru age 37. Tampa can keep its hero.
