  1. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 06:53 PM) This would seem like Rodon is going to battle for a starting job. But he can also bolster the pen even more and that's not a bad thing. Given that he is a Boras client, will not sign long term, I'd hate to use service time for him in the bullpen. In his case, I think he needs to get ready in Charlotte
  2. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 04:36 PM) I think it was more along the lines of Cooper knowing how to make Noesi more effective than the Sox saying he needs to be starting because his stats were better. Of course - they claimed him because they thought they could fix him. But they still took a middle reliever and immediately put him in the rotation.
  3. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) With McCarthy, Masterson and Santana gone, it's time for us to look at some high risk high reward type pitcher to compete for a spot in the rotation. Please bring us Medlen, Beachy, or Brett Andersen, in that order. Agree Prefer lottery ticket to Peavy
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) Not all WHIP is created equal though. I see a guy who gets a lot of ground balls who was on a team who may not have had a ton of range or defensive prowess. The Sox infield defense could be better than it is, but I feel safe saying it's better than the Marlins. Maybe the Marlins can tweak Rienzo, but I was definitely wrong on him. We're complaining about Jennings putting up a high WHIP in the majors, but Rienzo's was just as bad in AAA this past year, which does not bode well. Nobody's complaining about the trade. No one has said this is a trade that the Sox should not have made. While he does miss bats, he also walks players- not exactly what you want in the 7th and 8th (especially in situations where bats need to be missed). this idea that he's better than any incumbent Sox pitcher is "Grass is always greener" on steroids. the Sox have done well eyeballing other teams pens for guys with some control issues like this so it wouldn't surprise me at all if it turns out extremely well.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) P I'm not saying Simon is awesome, but I don't see any argument at all the he didn't have a substantially better 2014 than Noesi. And it's hard to make any sort of positive argument for Noesi outside of 2014. I'll make this argument: Noesi is a starter. He is not a reliever. Look at the evidence. His only other decent year was when he started most of the games. Despite a bullpen in tatters what do the Sox do immediately upon claiming this middle reliever? they put him in the rotation and keep him there.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:34 PM) I think he is a middle/long reliever. I fear last year was a bit of a fluke. I think he is decent, but not as good as what we saw last year. Who knows. These guys are inconsistent by nature. Personally, I like Putnam more than Petricka. I like Guerra a lot - more than most. I thought I saw something in Webb, although his year overall wasn't good. I think he will be good.
  7. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 12:57 PM) Its the difference between trading someone at peak value (Petricka) and someone at their floor value (Webb). Webb has the stuff to succeed and I think he is going to be a lights out guy eventually, but his development is going to take a little longer, something they have the luxury to provide with Guerra, Putnam, and Robertson also in the pen. If you can get a solid return for Petricka, the Sox should take it. RP's are the most unpredictable position for year to year performance. I agree with that, but I don't know what value he has out there. Petricka had low K totals. teams want and need Ks from their late innings guys. That's why I like using him as closer because I didn't see him as that useful coming in with runners on. His WHIP wasn't very good either. I'm not sure the Sox are sold on him. Yes, if someone values him highly, I'd trade him.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 03:01 PM) But if you've got one guy Coop says "I can work with" and one guy Coop says "I can't work with".... I think that's exactly what this trade is. Our problem child for their problem child. Bud pardon me for not jumping for joy believing that we've made some big bullpen upgrade with a 1.5 WHIP pitcher. Coop has some fixing to do before that happens. W
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) I geuinely think you are the only White Sox fan who could find anything wrong with this deal at all. Just pointing out factors. If Jennings and his 1.5 WHIP was on this team, you guys would want to cut him.
  10. QUOTE (bear_brian @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) It would seem problematic to lose Viciedo without having a ready replacement. Ideally we would want someone who hits at least as well, is superior defensively, and someone who also could play the other outfield positions. If we are limited now in terms of budget, how about one of the following: 1. Aoki at $6M per year and Bonifacio at $3M; that's a net increase of about $4.5M. I know a lot of you don't like either guy, but money now seems to be an issue. Both are passable, are versatile position-wise (both could actually play CF), bring more speed to our lineup, and remove the spectre of both Leury Garcia and Jordan Danks as alternatives. 2. Rasmus (who is asking for over $11M per), but at a salary of about $8M. That still leaves Danks as a backup (I know we have Shuck, but he was dreadful last year), but gives us a versatile defender with some power, tho with lots of K's. 3. ??? - you tell me: Crawford for Danks, Viciedo for Dominic Brown, Ichiro?? None of those are very pleasant. Bonifacio can't hit - he had one decent hitting year out of 8 ML seasons. Terrible. I'd prefer Danks to him. Aoki isn't a good defender. Rasmus is kind of a head case; no feel for his defense. Ichiro can't hit. Dom Brown is a worse defender than Vic. I was for that swap until the Sox signed their DH. Looks like Carl Crawford stands tall against this bunch. Lillian's Ethier would look okay.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) One of our writers (Will Siskel, not me) is going to do a post on the Rule V results sometime today. Will go out over Twitter, FB and on here when it's up. Or did you mean the rules for the draft? Yea I just meant the rules- what makes someone eligible for the minor league phase and what a team has to do with them to keep them.
  12. The wildcard for Detroit is Scherzer. I think the Sox got the un-hyped version of Iglesias- Rondon. Bosox hype machine begins in AA
  13. Well good My fav KAnny follow lives. North do u have some write up of minor League phase of rule 5 eligibility somewhere?
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Idk, I'd say the Dodgers are look roughly as good as last year, despite losing Hanley, and they've done it without trading ANY significant prospects and also cutting significant payroll. What they've lost in offense they've gained back in defense. And that's why they brought in this 10 mill front office....they want that payroll down without sacrificing on the field. Friedman is good at that.
  15. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) C, OF, 3B, go ......................... You missed the #2 need. A fourth starter. And a LF. C (a defensive position) and 3B aren't holes. We have made the moves this year giving up secondary players. That's what the Sox should give up with still a 2nd tier farm and a building team.
  16. It wouldn't surprise me if Rienzo has a good major league career. He has a plus pitch. I don't think the Sox liked him though. Jennings walks too many. Bad WHIP. We'll see.
  17. If PUtnam were on another team, people would love for the Sox to get him. (Just like they reactions to the Heaney deal, when the very people laughing at the Rays want to trade Montas for far less than Dee Gordon). He pitched a total of 12.2 innings prior to last season. Last year, he had a 1.08 WHIP in 54.2 innings. Yes it was probably inflated, but still good. You need guys like that in your bullpen - waiver pick ups, non-top prospects. I don't understand trading Viciedo for a relief pitcher. We should have that covered. Plus, who exactly plays LF? There is absolutely nothing on the roster. Nothing. Maybe Gillaspie could move there, but I would think they would have given him some action there last September. I'll say this about Viciedo's D - his coverage is poor, but he has a great arm.
  18. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) Leyer, pitcher went to Cincy. The one that starts with e. I actually liked Robinson Leyer- thought he had potential.
  19. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:17 PM) Andrew Heaney for Dee Gordon and his .324 .OBP? What the hell are the Marlins doing? A poster above suggested that the Sox trade Montas and Sanchez for Dee Gordon. I wouldn't do either one of the deals but that's not a universal opinion
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) In Nieto's case, the team had a very real need. And that pick was still a mistake IMO, he was obviously not ready, though he wasn't quite as bad as I thought he'd be. The worst part was he basically lost a year of development, while not providing anything on the roster that existing players in the system couldn't have done just as well. I guess you're altruistic. But for me, he wouldn't have been developing with the Sox, so I'm glad we took him. 14 was a lost year before the season started - they basically gave Konerko a courtesy spot on the roster, so why not use another spot. It did put a lot of pressure on Flowers though.
  21. Just as likely 28 other teams as us for the 3rd leg in a trade involving Rollins; especially as Philly would want young player back.
  22. maybe a bullpen pitcher. Maybe an OF- right now J Danks makes the roster and it wouldn't take much to do better than that. The Sox won't be able to just reserve a spot for someone they think will be ready in 2 years like they did last year though.
  23. They have to do something about left field. As it stands now, Viciedo is 4th OF Danks is 5th OF and that is a bad situation. I'd flip him for Ackley if that's the best they can do.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) So if you trade Danks, leaving Sale-Shark-Q at the front of the rotation, you now have to fill two slots with some combo of Noesi, Beck, and/or someone you acquire in the meantime. That is a steep drop-off. Rodon can be a 4th, but they are making it sound like he's in the pen to start (or AAA). The other considerable pitching prospects (Montas, Danish, Adams, etc.) are not ready, and the guys between like Recchia are not likely to be much more than #5 guys. You have no room for error. You'd need to find another starter, maybe a McCarthy or someone like that. I don't think you want to go into 2014 Opening Day with Beck, Recchia or anyone else at that level in the rotation if it can be avoided. Both may be more ready later, but neither are now IMO. I'd pass on this trade, although a 4/5 of Danks/Noesi is pretty weak as it is. I'd expect they'd shore that up anyway.
  25. Good god now were debating giving up Anderson for a catcher with Flowers' offensive output.
